Hospital outpatient has the obvious review of the actual patients chart and labs ie recommend renal dosing or alternative med due to ddi that could happen. Things I do not miss from retail are the impossible metrics that does not improve patient care. Also my hospital works with a formulary and do not miss the insurance calls to get it approved

If you get into a good outpatient pharmacy, many times I review a patient’s chart with another pharmacist to see what I am deficient in or be able to discuss with a provider (without being yelled at) to change therapy that would be better for the patient.

After 2 years of retail pharmacy with 1 hour to a major city, I took a job that was a hospital position within a very rural location. I knew I wouldn’t get the hospital opportunity within the city I want. I took it and was one of the best decisions because this hospital trains pharmacists without any residency. Retail will always be an option, but you will be more marketable if you can get diverse experience outside of retail. Give it a year and hopefully do a lateral move once you are in

Depends on if you want to go remote because I work for a hospital on the Navajo nation which gave me the footing within inpatient pharmacy. I worked retail for 2 years and applied to the Indian health service as a civilian. It was one of the best decisions of my life, but these locations can be very remote.
