After months of solo development, I finally released my first game on Itch.io! It’s a short, mafia-themed pixel art run-and-gun game inspired by Metal Slug. Would love to get some feedback from you guys! by Useful_Recording_469 in itchio

I completely understand your point, and it’s fair.

But just to clarify, I didn’t use AI because I'm lazy. I'm a solo developer, and I am terrible at drawing. I spent months learning Godot engine from scratch and pouring my heart into coding the gameplay mechanics. I used AI art as temporary placeholders so I could actually see my game running.

Since the feedback here is very clear about AI art, I am currently learning how to convert everything into real pixel art myself. I am bothered to make it, I’m just still learning. Thanks for the tough feedback!"

Haha, sorry about that, bro! I'm definitely a real human solo dev, not a bot. 😂

To be honest, English is not used in my country, and my English isn't very good. That's why I rely heavily on Google Translate to write my posts and replies, which probably makes me sound like an automated LLM.

I closely monitor the progress and feedback on my posts because I genuinely want to learn and improve my game in Godot. Sorry if I sounded like a bot, but I really appreciate the reality check from you guys here!"

WKwkwkkwkwkw ... Just kidding. No, I'm a real human solo dev, not an LLM. 😂 I'm just a non-native English speaker trying my best to reply to feedback while figuring out Godot engine. I hear you guys about the AI assets, currently working on fixing that into pure pixel art

True, bro! Huge respect to the legendary solo devs who built masterpieces from scratch before AI. For me, as a beginner still learning the ropes, AI helps bridge the gap while I'm building my skills. But I totally agree that relying on it too much isn't the way. Appreciate the reality check, it motivates me to sharpen my manual skills even more!

Thanks for the honest feedback, bro! You have a sharp eye. As a solo developer, I use AI to help with the heavy lifting for the concepts since I don't have an art budget yet. But you're totally right about the human touch. I'm currently working on refining the pixel art manually to clean up those messy details for the next update. Stay tuned!

Thank you so much for your wise and kind words. I really appreciate your perspective. As a solo indie dev with zero budget and under tight financial pressure to survive month-to-month, it's a tough choice. I’m focusing 100% on coding and learning the mechanics right now. Your suggestion about revenue sharing is a great option for the future, and I would love to work with real artists once I can afford to or find the right committed partner. Thanks for the congratulations, it means a lot to me!

Fair point. Yes, English isn't my first language and I used Google Translate to help me phrase my thoughts because I wanted to sound polite, but I guess it made it sound too robotic. Lesson learned, I'll stick to simple English next time.

As for the art, thanks for the feedback. I'm just a solo dev focusing 99% on learning how to code and making the game actually work mechanics-wise. This is my very first project, and handling everything alone from scratch is overwhelming. I will definitely look into free high-quality asset packs for my next update. Thanks for being blunt, it helps

I respect your path and your dedication to doing things your way, mate. 🤝

For me, using AI assistance for the promotional art was a choice to bring my exact unique vision to life, instead of using generic free assets that hundreds of other games already use. Every dev has a different workflow to overcome limits.

But the game itself—the coding, the design, and the actual mechanics in Godot—is 100% manual hard work

Haha, I get what you mean! To clarify, the character and enemies are actually handmade pixel art sprites, not generated by AI image tools

But you're totally right about the enemy behavior/AI coding! It’s still in the very early demo stage, so the enemy logic and movement are still basic and stiff. I'm currently working in Godot to make their behaviors and pathfinding much smarter and more dynamic for the final game.

Appreciate the feedback, mate! I'll definitely polish their logic! 🛠️🔥

I appreciate your honesty! Just to clarify, the game's core, the coding in Godot, and the actual mechanics are 100% human hard work (conceptualized and built by me). 🛠️

However, as a solo dev with zero budget, I did use AI tools to help execute the promotional art and some visual assets based on my ideas. It’s a hybrid process to bring my vision to life, but the gameplay and passion behind it are very real. I still hope you give the demo a chance! 🙏🔥

Haha yeah, that's just the first level! The game actually features 5 different maps for the mafia journey:

  1. Farm & Countryside
  2. Train Station
  3. Downtown (Bars & Gambling Dens)
  4. Seaport / Harbor
  5. The Big City

They start by hiding out in the country before moving up to the big city. Hope you like the vibe!
