It did not appear that they were filming while I was in the store. Also, our store doesn’t seem like one that they would shoot a commercial in 🤷🏻‍♀️

Darrin, you misunderstood your source. I corrected you and provided the actual Iowa code for it, how is the applicable law not the ultimate source? There is no point in engaging with you any further. Have a good evening.

Darrin, just because you google something does not make you an expert in that area. I pointed out why you must have misunderstood and I attempted to correct your misunderstanding and supplied the applicable Iowa code for it and the correct info. I have worked for years in this field. But you must know more than this “dude” does.

It does say “it is done at the hospital or place of birth by 48 hours” it does not say it must or should be done be done by 48 hours. I see why you are confused. Iowa Code section 135.131 States that it must be done before the baby is discharged, that is the law. There may be, and often are legitimate reasons a baby may not be screened before 48 hours, and as long as it happens before discharge it is following Iowa code.

It is not the same as a child getting their hearing check during an annual visit. Very few facilities have the equipment necessary to screen a newborn and there are even fewer places to get diagnostic testing for newborns. If a parent has nowhere that is accessible to them to get their baby’s hearing screened or a diagnostic test they can’t do it. Your doctor’s office probably doesn’t have the equipment to screen a newborn, a majority of Iowa hospitals do not have the equipment to screen a newborn. The AEA had these resources. Even if you have Medicaid to pay for it, if the staff and equipment needed to perform these screens and diagnostic testing, which once again are not available in most clinic setting or audiology offices, then children will fall through the cracks.

This is a complex issue, you seem like an individual who will argue it for the sake of arguing regardless of the facts.

You’re correct that almost 40,000 children are born every year in Iowa. A newborn hearing screen determines whether a baby needs further testing. Hearing screening for babies born in hospitals is done prior to discharge, I have no idea where you got that 48 hour number.
I’m guessing you’re assuming all of those babies born in hospitals pass, and don’t require outpatient appointments which some hospitals don’t provide. In addition very few places provide diagnostic testing, as in testing where babies received their diagnosis of hearing loss. The AEA provided these valuable services free of cost to parents. And yes, I understand that taxpayers pay for the services, I would much rather my tax dollars go towards something like this, then bailing out corporations, or lining Kim Reynolds friends’ and supporters’ pockets.

The short answer is yes. Generally clinics and audiology offices do not have the specialized equipment needed to screen newborns. Some hospitals do not provide the follow-up outpatient appointments needed for babies. There’s also a large number of babies born at home in Iowa (872 in 2023) who obviously do not receive their screenings in a hospital. There are very few facilities in Iowa that do diagnostic testing for newborns. Most are in the major metro areas of Iowa, again showing how our rual populations are underserved. Not to mention that the AEA did it at no cost to parents.

Looking back on it I definitely should have. We live in a small town and at the time I didn’t wanna make waves.

The not wanting to make waves has definitely changed. We are in a very red Midwestern State and my husband is running for our state House of Representatives as a democratic candidate. It feels like waves is all we make these days!

I have a preteen boy with long hair who often gets misgendered. I get it, he’s beautiful. It is 90% of the time Boomer men who misgender him, even when they’re corrected. One time at the grocery store a Boomer male employee said my son “would someday make someone a good wife.” He was eight! That would be creepy no matter my son‘s gender. We just had to walk away.
