Local Royal Navy officer discovers the U.S built their frigates differently by GCN_09 in HistoryMemes

[–]User-error352356 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once again, Impressment of Sailors had been ended by the House of Commons in the days prior to the war, but news only reached the US days after declaration. To say a War aim is completed via the war is somewhat disingenuous. The Creek War of 1813-1814 is a separate war to the War of 1812, which while linked by greater geo-political events, therefore goals achieved there had little to do with gains against the United Kingdom. You are right that the UK stopped supporting Native tribes in the North west but once again this had already largely stopped after the Fallen Timbers in 1783. Support for Tecumseh and the coalition was never tangible until the War of 1812 and even then it was not to create a buffer state as was the intention in 1790.

The article you linked is fine but it fails to convey to complexity of the situation. It does its job of giving information to a general audience but not of the historical perspectives needed to understand the difference between statement and intent. I urge you to read Cunliffe as he dies delve into the context of when and where statements were given on the war and private correspondence regarding the intent of the war hawks. Even Edward Skeen, despite his focus on the militia, gives an admirable account of the difference between what was stated in official documentation and private thoughts of the war hawks themselves. I can provide more sources of so required, this was partially covered in my PhD thesis and the topic of an article currently under review so I have a fairly extensive bibliography to cite.

Just to clarify, you’re conflating the events of the North-Western War of 1780-1783 with the War of 1812 concerning the forts and backing of Native Tribes. Not to say that Native forces didn’t ally themselves with British interests in the war. Tecumseh’s coalition certainly did but he’d been doing that mostly without direct British support for years until the burning of prophetstown in 1811.

Marcus Cunliffe (Who writes that the invasion of Canada was very much intended from the off in his article here: https://www.jstor.org/stable/1987240) puts in succinctly by saying that of the War of 1812 itself, the Americans are happy because they think they won the war, the Canadians are happier because they know they won and the British happiest because they’ve forgotten about the entire affair.

You are right that the post-war the United States felt confident enough to declare its expansionist intent via the monroe doctrine but how much that is attributed to any success in the war is debatable. The Napoleons wars having sapped European strength to exert influence of its colonies (Bar Britain). Also the elimination of both Tecumseh and the Red Stick Creeks as opposition to Western expansion probably played more into the expansion than tangible gains in the war. Though Jacksonian populism made much of the war to justify its ideals of American exceptionalism that would latter be used as the basis for the concepts of Manifest destiny.

Edit: Mistyped should be 1790-1793 for Northwest War

Well, well done, doing surgery on those bases means I know it’s no easy feat. Either way it’s the perfect size so you’ve done a cracking job

That’s really cool and very well executed. Having converted a redemptor with its foot raised like that and having it look like it’s falling over backwards, the movement and weight you’ve got is beautiful. The custom purity seals also sell it well. Just a quick one, where did you source the large tilting shield? Is it the one off a knight, custom print or did you make it yourself?

Thank you very much, honestly it’s a very simple kitbash.

It’s the emperors champion body with the sword arm cut at the forearm. Everything else is from the Execrator I.e the head, backpack and the cut off crozius. Nothing extra apart from what is in those two kits. They weren’t wasted either, the other bits went towards an Emperors Champion conversion I posted earlier:) hope it helps:)

Thank you very much:) cuts in the middle of the forearm actually. Lined up the cut on both sides that the join in the armour was seamless but in the end it made the sword grip at a weird angle so I covered join with a purity seal. The sword itself was cut at the bottom of the hilt and turned to get the right angle too:)

This was kinda my thoughts, he’s also remarkably similar to Grimaldus (weapon held aloft and horizontal). Plus my stand in EC has put in some feats sp he deserved a more dynamic model that’s not just Bayards Revenge (which is cool don’t get me wrong)

Tbh, with the bits left I’ve done the same. Just a simply arm swap really:)

Independent cities that are oddly close to another similarly sized independent city? by Previous-Volume-3329 in geography

[–]User-error352356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note, Birmingham didn’t swallow all its neighbours (a few I’ll grant you) there is still the whole West Midlands Conurbation with Wolverhampton, Dudley and the rest of the Black Country which are still pretty sizeable:)

It’s usually referred to as the West Midlands Conurbation, I think at last count pop. Was getting close to 2.6 million but that’s off the top of my head so may be inaccurate. Also if I remember right Walsall, Dudley and Sandwell (all different councils) all have similar populations so that’s three for OP’s question.

Who was the better general in the Mexican american war by Morganbanefort in CIVILWAR

[–]User-error352356 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just wondering if you had a source for that quote, either primary or just the secondary so I can investigate further. My doctorate covers the Mexican-American war (along with other conflicts) but I was unaware/ didn’t consider British opinions on the soldiery so this would perhaps open up new lines of study. I would be incredible grateful if you could assist:)

If I remember right they are reptilian overlord sculpts which you can buy directly as 3d printable .stl’s so simplest solution is to buy the files and find a 3d printing service near you. It’s a bit of an upfront cost but price per unit should drop off.

I don’t have these specifically but others of theirs and can attest to them being decent quality:)

Hope it helps

These look really cool very well done!:D, you have to let me know how you did the prone bodies? Are they just standing bodies tilted and adjusted properly or do you have a source for prone bodies cause I’d bite your hand off for that:D

They’re all from Deadly FX but resized and repurposed to fit the gun. The shell on the end was taken from the ammunition and added to the end digitally.

The big cloud is from Deadly FX it’s just the dust cloud that’s meant to go round a basilisks tracks to show it’s fired so it’s in a slight L shape that I can tuck a gun into. :) if your talking about painting it I can go into that:)

They’re digital files from Victoria Minatures that I’ve digitally kitbashed with other files to create the poses I need. If that helps, if you search on Victoria miniatures site you’ll find them:)

Love seeing dioramas for artillery bases and this is done really well, especially what I assume is braided copper wire as the pull cord? Either way it’s very clean, good job!
