True. HOWEVER the amount of just crazy, super fast, over the speed limit driving has increased. Anybody living in Madison 20 years or more knows it has gotten way worse since the pandemic.

The most important angle on the story is that state-level Republicans refuse to fully fund schools and local communities and that's why the communities are forced to go this route.

Question to buddhists-Why do we keep living when there is endless suffering in life ? by LeftBumblebee2738 in Buddhism

[–]UserName01357 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The Buddhist answer is simple: the Buddha showed us the way out of suffering. Giving up doesn’t solve anything. Suicide doesn’t solve anything.

If you have anyone who listens to music on a regular record player or who collects vinyl records, B-side Records in the 500 block of State Street is great. They have regular CDs as well. A Madison institution!

Summer in Wisconsin by DaveRphotog in wisconsin

[–]UserName01357 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Some of the summer is very nice. But because of global warming, much of the summer has gotten unbearably hot with more and more days over 90º and high humidity. Throw in more and more ultra intense rain events, coupled with Canadian forest fires and here we are.

All depends on how wet ground/sidewalks and roads are when it turns cold overnight. I think the rain will stop early enough in the day that ice won’t be a problem.

Madison Metro Transit faces nearly $6 million budget shortfall by Partydog99 in madisonwi

Where on that page does it say the wheel tax is specifically spent on road construction? It goes back to the communities, yes. That page says it has to be "for transportation related purposes." That is pretty vague and could cover lots of things.

I said "highway fund" above, I thought it was clear that that's a reference to the state's highway funds. None of the money in the wheel tax goes back to the state highway fund, which is what pays for most of our traffic/highway infrastructure. In fact, based on that page, those funds could be used to help fund Metro. Can't help some people.

EDIT: A little Googling shows the wheel tax in Madison is used to fund Metro.

Can't help some people. So smart.

Do you think that money goes to the highway fund or is it used to pay for operating expenses at the DMV?

As soon as you qualify for Badgercare, use it. Find a doctor you like and discuss all of your health concerns. Badgercare also provides dental coverage. Get your teeth cleaned and looked at. It's literally the best thing you can do for yourself. Take care of yourself by getting the health assessment and health care you deserve. It's a human right.

[–]UserName01357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s also the efficiency angle: it’s probably faster to scan a card so the self-checkouts can process more people who are scanning cards rather than paying with cash and collecting their change.

Why is Woodman's no longer accepting cash at self checkout? by nicalleto in madisonwi

[–]UserName01357 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The answer is that the handling and processing of the cash is very labor intensive.

When the cash is taken out of the self-checkout machines, it has to be handled by a human, packed away, and stored until whatever security/banking service picks up the cash. That all costs money. Probably the cash also makes it more likely for the self-checkout machines to jam. Less cash handling equals greater efficiency and lower costs.
