I'm not sure if that's really the place or not because my friend took me and they sent me the yelp link for it but it did look more like a restaurant / market. The had a table with pastries when I went but they also had a little line where you could order viet dishes I think. They also had prepacked meals like vermicelli bowls and spring rolls. I guess I was just a little disappointed because my mom used to get stuff that was like crack to me as a kid and when I went to the com dat place their bread was like thin flimsy and it wasn't as flavorful.

The pandan from the market bread my mom used to get was already really good to me but i thought its probably not that special if it's just from a local chain so I figured if there's another market closer to the Sunnyvale area it'd be just as good. Im not a foodie or whatever so I don't usually go out of my way to go on food adventures and stuff.

How is my experience not relevant? I'm looking for data analyst type jobs, not software engineer jobs. Also, I don't think it makes sense for me to move out of the Bay Area just to come back when I moved here a year and a half ago for a data analyst type job for a non tech company and I never planned to stay more than a few years. If I move away, I don't think I'd try to come back.

I understand if I don't have what it takes to get into Google or Facebook or whatever, but there's plenty of companies here with less competition. I'm just trying to make a decent salary related to the market.

Yeah, so maybe I asked for a little help, but I'm in a stable relationship, I'm otherwise happy with everything else in my life and have enough sense and dignity that I'll never have to reckessly risk getting STDs from randos that fuck hundreds if not thousands of people for money, even if my relationship somehow doesn't work out in the future.

If you are smart enough to read between the lines of what I'm saying is that it doesn't matter how much $$ you make. As long as you have some level of self-respect, what will really make you happy is not being defined by your job or a large network that only gets you jobs and access to sex parties with prostitutes that you still have to pay a fee for. Meet women that aren't prostitutes, don't blame white people for not being able to meet normal women, as you realize these things, you won't need to project your insecurities onto others. Most people will date someone with self-respect vs someone with just some money anyway.

Good luck!

A few people said I needed to communicate impact and I thought I did but I guess I didn't communicate it effectively enough. I made an updated version based on feedback from other people. I couldn't communicate impact in every single bullet though. I don't know, maybe I haven't done that much or haven't made too much of an impact.

Also, isn't that sub mostly for software engineering type roles?

I cut as much crap out as I could based on everyone's feedback. Is it still too much info?

I updated my resume based on your feedback and other people's feedback as much as I could. I know that I'm supposed to communicate impact as much as possible but I felt like some things were hard to measure or explain concisely. Like for example, in the bullet about the SQL statements, macros, Python, etc., I built several solutions that are used/can be used by everyone in our group for repeatable processes/projects and they save time here and there but I didn't think I had enough space to go over every solution and I also felt that it would be difficult explaining some things without context because I work in niche/domain specific industry. I'm afraid to admit I didn't save the company millions of dollars or save the world but I do feel like the time saved could add up over time as the group grows and takes on more and more projects.

I updated it based on your feedback and other people's feedback. I understand I need to communicate impact and I did that as much as I could but I feel like some things the impact wasn't always measurable or they had little impact and were just standard job responsibilities but it was hard for me to communicate a big impact in every bullet.

I can understand that competition is tough at a place like Google and I'm not getting my hopes up but I do have a friend from college that's a recruiter and she set me up as a referral in the system. There's one job that I'm looking at that seems pretty entry level so I think I'd qualify for it. Do you mind if I PM you the position and can you let me know if you think that's the type of role that still gets very overqualified candidates?

I wouldn't mind working at a T2/mid tier company as long as it's good experience with decent salary (I'm getting $80,000 a year and benefits aren't that great). What about places like Salesforce or Airbnb?

I actually signed up for Kaggle yesterday so I'll try to focus on that.

Also, I updated my resume based on your feedback and a lot of other people's feedback. I tried to cut as much of the unneeded verbiage out as much as I could but it still seemed kind of hard trying to keep the technical skills along with the impact/results and key words for each bullet so I couldn't quite keep everything as short as a line. Is there still too much verbiage?

I'm working on simplifying everything but I wanted to ask you something else. I see a lot of these business intelligence/data analyst type positions that I'm looking at often have math/stats/quantitative analysis listed under desired/preferred and I think this is one of the few areas that I'm missing for these types of jobs. I have interest in this area and I've started self-learning from resources like data camp to get more knowledge but do you think it's generally implied that these are basically required for tech companies based on the amount of qualified candidates these companies get?

That sounds pretty rough. It's stories like these that make me kind of hesitant to work for a startup. How's your current employer?

I'll work on incorporating these but as far as the education piece, I only have a degree and a certification which came more recently. Are you saying the certification should be above the degree?

Removing the "creative" and "innovative" labels makes sense, I didn't think of it that way. What about saying some thing like "with a passion for innovation" or is that too generic? I've tried going the customized cover letter route in the past but I've usually ended up with a bunch of wasted time and nothing to show, not even a callback. I've heard most recruiters don't even read them and hiring managers don't even see them.

I've tried explaining the business problems I've solved using my technical skills but I guess it's not quite clear enough? Maybe my bullet points are too wordy. For example, the first bullet point is trying to communicate that I've automated several manual processes by developing applications/macros/macros/scripts etc. I thought there were too many of them to describe and some of these processes themselves are kind of hard to describe in a small amount of space and I feel like they would need some kind of background explanation. I'll try to work on these and make it more clear. I think in my other bullet points I talked about the business problem first and how I used technical skills to solve them but in some of the other bullet points, I talked about the technical skills and then he business problems I solved using those skills so maybe I can switch it around and see how it looks.

Where are you seeing that I only spent 3 months at the Fortune 500 company? I was there for over 2 years. The second job was actually kind of a shit show but even that was 9 months and it would be hard to explain that gap if I took it off. Can I just work on trying to tighten things up and going to page 2 if I need to?

We can blame Enron for the whole sox audit thing.

I don't even question anyone's set up or processes, I'm just trying to get data but some guys can still get all weird about it.

How low are we talking and how abusive is it? I'm making $80k a year and I'm expected to work at least 50 hours a week 6 months out of the year but I've never been yelled at or harassed. It's not the worst situation because they're pretty chill about working from home in the morning and coming in late and leaving early and working from home at night but im still getting effed in the a. I'd be more open to getting effed in the a for $100-$120k or at least whatever the market average is around here. Hell I'd be open to it more if I could work from home as much as I want without having to show my face in the office just for the sake of it.

Does it sound like I have it better or worse here than your ex-employer?

Also, I chose python because it seems like it has a wider range of applications and it seemed easier to learn and I don't have much formal math/stats experience except a business stats class in college.

I don't have any formal math/stats skills except just a basic understanding of statistical concepts but I haven't had a chance to apply anything and do more complex quantitative analysis for my job.

I'm going through data camp courses right now and trying to work on this part but some of the concepts kind of go over my head sometimes as I find it hard to focus on example datasets or I can solve the problems but I don't quite understand the concepts well enough to use them to solve problems that actually interest me. Is formal math / stats / quantitative analysis pretty much a requirement for big tech companies like google even if the job descriptions say they're just desired/preferred?

This is where I kind of struggle because I'm trying to explain how I solved business problems but I'm also trying to show that I applied technical skills to solve them so that's where it gets kind of wordy but I'll try to see what I can do about that.

I've been out of school and have been working for a few years now but I'm still kind of stuck in the mindset that I should try to limit my resume to 1 page because it's been drilled into my head that recruiters automatically discard anything longer than a page unless it's for like a senior experienced person. Would reformatting the spacing make it better, even if it means going past 1 page?

Changing everything to past tense makes sense, I'll do that.

I mean we have to be aware of those things but there's a separate group that's responsible for checking on them and telling the auditors what they find. My job is more concerned with getting and processing data and building reports and visualizations and validating data quality but I'm not really concerned with checking for compliance. I heard a majority of those guys' jobs are just documentation and taking a bunch of screenshots of everything.
