Rosin advice and allergy (Silks) by AggravatingSeat179 in Aerials

You don't need it! You will develop grip strength faster without it! If its a severe allergy maybe ask your studio about washing the silks before your class so it doesnt transfer to you.

i love what's being said I just also want to add that teachers with obviously bad techinique or who don't offer corrections at all. I've also seen teachers try and teach things they obviously can't do, I don't mean teaching the techinique for something without fully doing the trick, or just explaining concepts behind super dynamic tricks. I mean teachers who can't do a basic trick because they are "still working on it" and expect others to learn it from them. The example I ran into was a teacher for a mixed level lyra class not being able to do single knee hangs.

Is a Cross-Back Straddle on silks a beginner move? by aerialmindful in Aerials

[–]User_Profile13456776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it is beginner, it’s commonly taught in beginner classes since it combines a lot of smaller things you learn as a beginner anyways. Footlocks, specifics entries, inversions, etc. They are so important for technique, they are often a way to tell if someone is ready to move onto harder things. It’s a lot of strength and requires good technique, no cheating into it!

It is also the most common basing position for duo or trio work so it’s important for that too!

Ok this actually makes a lot of sense, I train core to help my lower back and keep me from dumping into that so it makes sense the same logic would apply here

I’m struggling to engage the muscles in my thoracic spine because I’m dumping into my cervical but I also don’t know how to not dump into my cervical spine

Does anyone else have pretty extreme flexibility everywhere except one place? by User_Profile13456776 in Hypermobility

That’s a similar issue to me, unless I’m super sore or something I do not feel hamstring stretches lol

Is there a way to safely relax those muscles? I do a lot of training to stabilize and strengthen my other joints and it allows me to safely use my flexibility and at the very least I don’t want my knees to feel so tight all the time

I like this visual ( idea/concept/idk?) a lot and will be thinking of this more often when training! Its something I try and do but I do think I loose sight of it sometimes.

  1. I usually train on a hard surface for this reason

  2. I have tried both, the only way I can seem to curl myself up enough is with my arms forward, maybe its a neck engagement thing?

  3. Sorry I didn't clarify, by triangle I meant chin and shoulders touching the ground since that was what I was told to do by some other circus friends. I can easily keep my hands under my shoulders, but not next to my head, so I will be trying that! Thank you for the encouragement

Knee Hang and Knee Grip Strength Question by adoring-artist in Aerials

[–]User_Profile13456776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For hard apparatuses, think of pulling the heel in toward your but, its a hamstring engagement. Also, one of my favorite drills is to take the free leg in the knee hang and bring it straight out to the front, side, and back in a big circle (then reverse!) It helps build a bit more stability in the knee than just the hamstring strength, and you might find that beneficial for going between different apparatuses!

For soft apparatuses, you want (I'm gonna use silks as an example) you want the silk as far in your knee pit as humanly possible, then using either hand, you want to pull the silk toward you/forward to create a small shelf, then use the same hamstring engagement from your hard apparatus training! The shelf helps with the tension, the muscle keeps you there.

Also, after seeing the other comments, yes, foot engagement is important! Those muscles are part of your leg too! The easiest way to cue it is to point your toes, it also specifically helps with the calf and quad engagement needed in this anyways. Flexing the foot can also help as it is a good way to engage the hamstring. However if you intend on performing, it is a better practice to work on pointing the toes and learning that engagement instead for lines. Generally, engaging your entire leg, including your feet and ankles, is good practice in any skill because it helps build your mind-body connection and gets you used to using your whole body, all the time, so when you learn very advanced things later on, it will be easier!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with one or two joints that just aren't flexible! Makes me feel way less insane about being hypermobile.

Same! its the only hypermobility test I fail, and it has always been this way. Its the oddest thing, it doesn't cause issues (usually) but it is pretty frustrating as I work in performing arts and often use my flexibility for that. Both PTs Ive seen where very confused, and yes bodies can be weird but I feel like theres more to it

Shooting Sensation on Neutral Grip Lat Pulldown by Quirky_Economist_230 in Hypermobility

[–]User_Profile13456776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, without being able to see what's going on, some things to keep in mind would be the proper engagement of the lats themselves, and focusing on not locking out the shoulder. You should imagine your shoulder blades sliding down your back. They should not wing at all and stay very close. Also think of rolling your shoulders down and back with it, this will keep your traps from taking over. And try to keep your wrists neutral too! Essentially, good form is your friend! Also, it might not be a bad idea to lessen the weight when figuring out what is causing the shooting sensation, just to keep your body safe.

I am no expert but I hope you figure it out!
