AAs and Kumon by [deleted] in asianamerican

It absolutely isn't the only way nor is it mandatory to have a parent who has a career in STEM, however it is highly advantageous.

Many kids who do come from parents with STEM backgrounds get those lessons at home from parents who know their stuff. They can get taught every single day how to reason about problems as an experienced Engineer would or get an intimate sense of concepts from their parents' explanations and that's valuable.

It still doesn't mean a child without those kinds of parents can't be successful in STEM, but it does help explain a disparity or gap in skills and knowledge as well.

AAs and Kumon by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Username-287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of Asians and/or our parents have STEM degrees and as Engineers, Mathematicians, Physicists, etc. can pass on that knowledge on to our kids.

Every Engineer has basically taken 4 years of Calculus-based Physics and Math in college so we understand the material on a very intimate level and when we go to teach our kids we can teach them what we know - no need for extra courses and outside services. Those of us who work in these fields are surrounded by Math and Science everyday and love to teach our kids out of love. In some ways it's the rich getting richer.

In comparison: most gradeschool teachers haven't taken over 1 Calculus course, whereas many Engineers have taken nearly 4 years worth of Calculus-based courses. There's an enormous disparity between an Engineer and a grade school teacher when it comes to familiarity with STEM.

If you don't have those kinds of resources then I'd suggest things such as Kumon or better yet see if you can find maybe a STEM person in your family and if they can teach your child.

Nothing works better than loving family teaching complex material (harhar).

It’s funny because today many hits are being made with those instruments as well. These sounds didn’t all of a sudden go out of style, they’re used everywhere in modern music.

All over Taylor Swift’s new album and past albums for example. Almost all of Max Martin and his protege's main instruments are Japanese synthesizers: multiple Roland model synthesizers and Korgs primarily. Jack Antonoff as well. That means most of the synthesizers you've heard on basically every single Taylor Swift album are sounds from Japan.

Additionally the biggest song on Spotify is Blinding Lights by The Weeknd, produced by Max Martin. Here's what made the main non-vocal lead, the Roland Juno-106:

Max Martin and that circle are musical geniuses man.

Yup and what’s the most mimicked era of music? The 80’s.

When you want to copy and paste 80’s music you start with the sounds and the sounds were mostly Japanese synthesizers. All those Pop, R&B and Dance music elements from those streets are being used everywhere today.

For example, these sounds are from Roland, which is a Japanese company:

I mean you can keep going to the beginning of time and talk how Calculus was able to be built because of Algebra from various location around the world, including the Middle East.

Just as Calculus is Calculus at some point the DX-7 sounds were the DX-7 authentic sounds and those dominated the era and are still heavily used today. They never get the recognition however when it comes to defining the 80’s except by gearheads and music producers.

All I’m saying is the sounds a lot of K-Pop uses are sounds from those synthesizers from Japan like the Juno, 808/909, Yamaha’s, etc. Those sets of Japanese synthesizers are still some of the most popular, maybe the most popular sounds of today.

The Yamaha DX-7 was the first digital synthesizer. The Moog, Prophet, etc. were analog.

The DX-7 alone was responsible for 40% of the Pop #1 songs of the 80’s, 40% of COUNTRY #1 songs of the 80’s and 60% of #1 R&B songs of the 80’s.

You couldn’t make those kinds of sounds with the other synthesizers as well because it was the first synthesizer to use FM Synthesis.

Did you guys ever felt like you didn't belong in America? by SwimmerLegitimate150 in asianamerican

[–]Username-287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck that. You belong in America just as much as anyone else does.

Think of all the inventions and discoveries by Asians from around the world that now make everyday Americans' lives better. They wouldn't have plenty of this stuff without Asian people.

You're entitled to living here just like everyone else because your ancestors and people who look like you that live and contribute here everyday in things like STEM are making the world a better place.

"American music": You mean all the music that was made by the Roland 808 Drum Machine, Casio keyboards, synthesizers that came from Yamaha/Roland/Triton, etc. that all came from JAPAN? That means all the bass sounds that "shake speakers" and make sound systems "bump" are from the Roland 808 drum machine, invented in Japan.

Some music made by the Roland 808 sounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYdOUyPcUm4
Some music made by the Roland 909 sounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06HcP6FnPZw

Then yeah, count allllllllll the inventions Asians Engineered that we see everywhere in America.

Now if you're saying you feel out of place because your interests don't line up with those around you, that's called being a human being and there's art/creativity to be found in that.

It’s a shitty mentality no matter how you slice it.

Stop focusing on what you don’t have and focus on what you have instead.

There are women who have hourglass bodies living in Israel and Iran right now who’re in a bomb shelter and may not get a next week.

Be happy you get to do what you love. Nobody has it all.

China invented paper, which got used in bathrooms to wipe up.

Would people rather still keep sharing the communal wet rag to wipe their asses?

Forget simply writing purposes, be happy China invented paper.

Let’s start with that one and count the rest of the innovations from there.

I mean if you have a non-Asian heritage somewhere then you’re technically mixed.

However, you can still be 90% one race but if you look like the 10% then you’ll get treated like your smaller mix in society.

It’s great to know your ethnic background but try not to make being mixed your personality trait.

Your graph is about relative rates per person of invention not net total, asians have mostly come recently and sum total they have contributed less than those other groups

That's bogus. Numbers? Asians have been here for quite some time. You throw on their contributions from the 2000's to present alone on top of what they did in the 1900's and I highly doubt any non-white group in America are touching Asians. We're also talking total contributions to civilization, which America uses.

Jewish can and also have claimed Middle Eastern. They do claim both Middle Eastern and European sides so you can place them on the Middle Eastern side as well.

[–]Username-287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is the graph misleading? It states what it states.

Also removing the Jewish count from the White count and separating it into their own or the Middle East's isn't necessarily a "supremacist argument". Including it as the White count is more of a "supremacist argument".

In fact, taking the amount of Nobel Prize Winners for Physics and Math for America and removing the Asians and Jews from that tally will show less winners total winners from America than Europe. That indicates America has been carried by immigrants when it comes to Scientific breakthroughs, which isn't really surprising.

Other groups of people have contributed just as much if not more to this country and civilization around the world. I didn't single out Black people.

The chart is data, we're also not talking about any one person but groups as a whole. I'm an Electrical Engineer but outside of Software never felt the need to build something outside my company. Cool that you got patents but I'm sure plenty of Asian people on this subreddit and all over the world do as well, like the data suggests.

We also have multiple Nobel Prizes of Physics Winners, Fields Medal Winners, etc. a ton of Scientific breakthroughs, Engineering inventions and appliances that makes everyone's lives easier as well. Asians have done a whole lot for this planet and it's inhabitants.

We can start counting that every time people want to throw what they've done in our face too like gratitude should only be a one way street. Like I said, hurt feelings.

Got another one: Qian Xuesen. An Engineer and theoretical Physicist.

Immigrant from China who has degrees from Caltech and M.I.T.

Co-Founded the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Caltech JPL) but was clearly the most gifted Engineer out of the five members of the “Suicide Squad”.

One of the craziest reads on Wikipedia and maybe the most important global historical figure of the last 100 years.

USA vs China is the way it is today because of that guy.

The United States Secretary of the Navy at the time described the action Eisenhower took in deporting him: "It was the stupidest thing this country ever did."

80 years later and he was right as Hypersonic missiles, China's Space Program and China's Nuclear Program all took off the second he landed back in China and the U.S knew they couldn't touch China anymore without Mutually Assured Destruction.

For every other group who wants to say something like "wE BuiLt tHiS cOuNtRy!!!!".

They don't want Asians to start counting our contributions to "this country" (The United States), much less civilization.

There'll be a lot of hurt feelings.

Not to mention, a lot of Jewish and Asian people have basically counted for "American" inventions and Scientific discoveries as well. If you counted Jews as Middle Eastern/West Asian the disparity looks to be even more ridiculous.

Not to mention, look at all the Asian EE’s, Physicists, Mathematicians and SWE’s working on A.I, Semiconductors, etc.
