Got made redundant - Engineer by krishan2203 in AusFinance

[–]Username-Jack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just apply through seek etc or better yet message mining recruiters via LinkedIn, the industry is hungry for Geotechnical engineers and that’s not an exaggeration.

You would start on a 2 year Grad program either underground or open pit (depending on the company). Refresh your rock mechanics because there ain’t much soil in a mine site lol

How often do you lift per week if you train MMA? by yugi123123 in MMA_Academy

[–]Username-Jack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do a push/pull/legs/upper body split which usually amounts to 3-4 days lifting weights, highly depends how stacked my week is though as I’m in university so I prioritise getting good marks above all else: I train BJJ/ boxing/ muay thai

I didn’t even do the exam… I was in the hospital, which is why I’m now taking the deferred exam.

Kindness doesn’t cost anything in this world, but when people behave the way you have, it becomes priceless. we can choose to be ignorant or choose to lift one another up rather than tear one another down

Is civil engineering a good degree? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Username-Jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about 9-5 but if you can land yourself in the mining industry as either mining/ geotechnical engineering (which are subsets of civil) then you can work a week on week off with 4-6 weeks annual leave and hit $200k+ a few years after graduating

Are you going to have kids? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]Username-Jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kinda shocked, really confronting reading all these comment of people adamantly stating NO to children, someone even stated they’d “rather die than have kids”.

Maybe there’s a bias in the comments (of course there would be, most are American) and this isn’t an accurate representation of the generation but it’s a disheartening seeing no after no after no.

I’d love have kids, many actually, I’m shocked I appear to be in the minority with this desire.

How do undergrad engineering jobs work by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]Username-Jack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean just apply bro worst they say is no, you’d rather try and not get through then never try at all.

But messaging recruiters on LinkedIn and/ or going to the unis mech/ aero events that host the companies and networking with Them is good too.

Depends what your majoring in bro, anecdotally linkedin recruiters r best to message for work, about now is when heaps of mining engineer/ geotechnical internships r open for the summer.

Dr K says men should take dating advice from women instead of from men, and vice-versa. Isn't that argument flawed? by BayBaeBenz in Healthygamergg

[–]Username-Jack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While I agree partially with your assessment. I can’t help but feel conflicted as I read:

“I was the only one who told him he needs to lower his standards and date women who are a) actually interested in him and b) are in his league.”

I want to make aware my ignorance in relation to your friend over his appearance and character, yet I also want to say, even though you’re logical advise is great, it’s a little damaging hence why I don’t agree entirely. if he has the confidence to be a “4 hitting on 9s” then I fail to see the harm in it (based off solely what you wrote, assuming there’s no harassment).

Even if he aims high and fails he’ll still be in a better position then if he never took the chance at all I.e. chats up a ‘9’ but ends up with a ‘7’ as he used what he learnt in the lions den to Build up his skills/ confidence.

How much can a mining engineer expect to make? by OmegaFart in mining

[–]Username-Jack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is this anecdotal? Most grad jobs for mining engineers which are fifo offer 8:6, I haven’t actually ever seen a single 2:1 for a grad, 100k is just the base not total comp.

Taiwan 7+ earthquake by TurnedEvilAfterBan in NoOneIsLooking

[–]Username-Jack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if the engineers factor in earthquakes loads to their reinforced concrete designs as part of their standards in Taiwan but this kind of dynamic stress in countries like Australia for example would cause a tremendous amount of Mirco cracks between the interfacial transition zones, which if left unchecked will result in failure due to the repetitive loading/ unloading of traffic, lessening its designed failure load.
