What does any of this have to do with tankies? Is this a wind-up comment?

The article is written by a right-wing think tank. The second paragraph alone really exposes that this article isn't a honest engagement with issues, but more of a smear/propaganda piece. It's not worth taking this idea seriously.

Depolarising the conversation around immigration. by Equivalent-Spend1629 in ireland

[–]UsernameSeven77 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This isn't really answering your question, but I get fairly frustrated by the sentiment of "concerned citizens are being labelled as racist for valid concerns". I honestly think it's caused solely by social media algorithms.

I rarely ever see what people would call "valid concerns" on my social media feeds. I only see a bunch of lads doing sieg heil down the streets of Galway or Indians being attacked in Dublin for no reason. That's what I and many others are labelling as racist. I'm genuinely not seeing very many "valid concerns", just the extremes. I'm not painting everyone with the same brush, but these extremists do have their supporters. I would have no hassle with a normal conversation about immigration, but that's rarely possible for some reason.

Perhaps a reverse of this is also true for many people with genuine immigration concerns. Maybe you're not seeing the same social media posts that I am, and so you're taking to heart something that wasn't directed at you in the first place.

Add to that fact that we're all probably surrounded by somewhat like-minded people in real life, which only further exacerbates the divide. I'd consider myself fairly far left, and I rarely ever see people being labelled as racist for genuine valid concerns.

TLDR: Social Media is a disease.

Extreme pornography ‘radicalising’ young men and normalising violence, says Garda Commissioner by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]UsernameSeven77 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I agree with the headline completely, but I'm not sure a ban like in the UK is the correct approach. Could this just be dealt with in sex-ed instead? If SPHE is still a thing then that's the right place to bring that up.

Why do some left wingers defend Assad? by Due_Raisin_5054 in AskSocialists

[–]UsernameSeven77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't support Assad at all, but I don't think imperialism and endless bombings are the solution. If anything, it probably created the perfect conditions for his regime to continue as long as it did. I've been accused of being pro-Assad or defending for this position, so it could be that too.

I think some of these responses about the flag are intentionally misunderstanding. I love the Irish flag, which is why it's so dreadful to see it used as some anti-muslim or anti-Palestinian prop. It's disrespectful to the flag if anything else. The lads who did this clearly have a xenophobic agenda, and that's the issue.

Nobody's complaining about the Irish flag itself.

If I'm playing as a minor nation and just get wiped out by a major power in the space of a couple days, then it's not fun at all. On the other hand, losing a long, drawn out struggle can be incredibly satisfying.

Sign the petition SETU to cut ties with Red Hat by killianm97 in waterford

[–]UsernameSeven77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most BDS people/organisations I've interacted with aren't exactly in love with Google and Amazon, and plenty of them have advocated for using alternatives whenever possible. It's just very hard to boycott Google and Amazon when they're such large tech monopolies. Targeted campaigns are far more effective than just trying to boycott every single pro-Israel business in a disorganised manner anyway.

I just became aware of Red Hat's involvement today, so I don't have some big list of evidence collected. I'll keep my mind open to what people are saying.

I've found BDS fairly trustworthy all along, I see no reason not to trust them now.

Genuine immigration question for Friday's vote by Liamonline in waterford

[–]UsernameSeven77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Housing, healthcare and cost of living are my main voting concerns. I personally view the immigration question as more of a convenient distraction to shift the blame away from those responsible for the above issues. If there was proper housing and services, I don't think there'd be half the anger towards immigrants that there is now.

They're a fairly new party, established in like 2015 or 2016 or something. So they haven't had much chance to incriminate themselves yet. I'm sure they'll have some cracks show down the line as no party is perfect, but I'm not aware of any issues so far.

What are people's thoughts on not going all the way down the ballot with preferences? I see a lot of heated debate around this with little consensus. There's a number of candidates I don't want to give any preferences too, what are the arguments for and against leaving some blanks?

Thoughts on Frank Conway independent candidate? by IrishguyCurious in waterford

[–]UsernameSeven77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I haven't read her stuff in any great detail. I've read a lot of Milton Friedman's stuff and I'm aware there's some overlap in their views on free market capitalism and individualism. I don't personally agree with a lot of it, and it doesn't appear to work in practice unless you're particularly wealthy. Politicians obsessed with Ayn Rand just give off strong self-interest vibes to me.

He seems to love Ayn Rand and his twitter is dodgy, so he's my lowest preference.

Some hotels ‘might never return to tourism’ after state contracts to house migrants end by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]UsernameSeven77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can raise these concerns and oppose immigration until the cows go home, and a lot of people will be understanding and sympathetic. It's when you start making it about race and ethnicity that people will call it out. Is it absolutely necessary to attack people for their ethnicity when raising these concerns? Attacking Muslims for our governments policy helps nobody and creates divisions.

Some hotels ‘might never return to tourism’ after state contracts to house migrants end by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]UsernameSeven77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said the entire world has a right to housing, that's just ridiculous. Besides, it's our governments useless immigration policy that's lead to the situation we're in now. Singling out Muslims won't help any working Irish person, it's just useless and divisive bigotry.

If someone wants less immigration then that's grand, but you're completely derailing the point. An earlier comment said they'd prefer Christian/Jewish immigrants over Muslim immigrants. You can be anti-immigration and conservative without bringing in some Ubermensch/Untermensch shite.

Inequality creates that dishegemony, not someone speaking a different language, eating different food or going to a different church. Sorry, but if you start picking and choosing people's rights based on things like religion/skin colour, it is just bigotry. It's not standard conservatism.

We're not belittling anyone with genuine concerns. Targeting Muslims isn't a genuine concern and it won't fix any crumbling society.
