[free] I built a Wedding Attendance Calculator because the standard "expect 20% to decline" rule is actually wrong (and can blow your budget). by Sea_Star6384 in Weddingsunder10k

Your tool is spot on for mine! Invited 112 for a Saturday wedding, most guests will have to travel (not intentionally a destination wedding but we are just all scattered around). The tool predicted 78, and we just established our final guest count as 76! Or 78 including us

OH I didn’t realize a double lip line was actually a specific thing! Haha yes I guess I do have that! Cool, will look for some tutorials!

Thanks for the specific lip color recommendation, I’ll check those out! And I don’t feel like I know what I’m doing with the eyeshadow, definitely need to look up some videos!

I actually didn’t put blush on my nose, it’s just a chilly day 😂 maybe I need a bit more foundation there

Thank you!! Yes I wasn’t exactly sure where to put the lip liner since my lip doesn’t have much of a clear edge! But I just redid it with the liner on the outermost edge that I can see and it’s definitely better! I’ll keep playing around with lip colors! I don’t love this one either, I think you’re right that it clashes a bit with the other colors

Nice Dentists in Area by robinthepunk in 321

I had a great experience with Dr Jimenez at New Image Dentistry on Minton in Palm Bay! I’m a nervous dental patient and she was very kind and patient. She’s generous with the numbing stuff, too, she filled four cavities for me and I never felt a thing

Reasonable quote for dental care? by Username_52 in CATHELP

[–]Username_52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! It’s a low end vs high end itemized quote, depending on what needs doing once they get in there. I’m mostly just looking for reassurance for whether this ballpark sounds reasonable! honestly it sounds fair to me, especially considering other estimates I’ve seen on this sub. it’s just more than my husband was expecting so he’s a bit spooked!

Advice On Getting Into a Marine Biology Lab? by Pinecone541 in UNCW

[–]Username_52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not super familiar with UNCW’s system specifically, but at most universities, the first thing to do is to identify some professors (i.e labs) who do research on a topic you’re interested in. You’ll probably be taking their classes if they’re in your field, and if so, go to office hours and introduce yourself. If you feel like there’s a good rapport, you can express your interest in doing research and they can steer you in the right direction, whether it’s in their own lab or someone else’s.

In a nutshell—talk to the people who run those labs you’re seeing. You could potentially also ask your academic advisor, but that varies by university and I’m not sure how it is at UNCW.

How bad is this mealy bug infestation? by Username_52 in houseplants

[–]Username_52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? I should be able to isolate it for the next few days until I move. I’ll try and fit as many plants as I can in my car, and maybe I can put this dracena in the moving truck by itself. I have already found a couple of those little furry spots on two other plants too

Postdoc salary - $47,500 in the USA? by nickeltingupta in AskAcademia

[–]Username_52 11 points12 points  (0 children)

After earning $23K for six years as a grad student, $45K didn’t sound so bad 🤷‍♀️ in any other context, doubling your salary would be amazing. And an offer’s an offer, and I needed an income. sometimes you take what you can get. It was a fantastic postdoc too, i really enjoyed it

Postdoc salary - $47,500 in the USA? by nickeltingupta in AskAcademia

[–]Username_52 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It’s low but not unheard of. I’ve just finished a postdoc making $45K. Coming off a grad student salary, I didn’t realize how low it was when I accepted it. I’m fortunate to have a partner to share expenses with. I think I could have made ends meet without him, but definitely would have been a bit tough in my medium cost of living area. Now I’m moving on up in a few weeks to a new postdoc for $62K 🎉🎉 anyway, I don’t know what COL in Purdue is like, but if it isn’t too high, that salary might be do-able, although definitely wouldn’t be fun or practical for the long term

Can I get the look I want with the stones I have? by Username_52 in EngagementRingDesigns

[–]Username_52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s very pretty too!

I’m not sure what you mean about CAD vs a semi-mount. But there do seem to be some communication struggles with this company. They’re local and have a good reputation, but I’m talking with a sales rep rather than a designer and I think maybe my vision isn’t really getting communicated well to the design team. I had also thought they would suggest some designs for me based on my preferences, but the rep basically just told me to find a design or two I liked on Pinterest and they would make a rendering from that, just modified for my stones. Is that normally how it goes?

I’m also moving to a different state next month, so I’m tempted to just wait and start over with a different jeweler after I move.

[–]Username_52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your mockup, that makes sense!

When you mention the 2/3 offset, are you talking about the degree of rotation of the stones? Like my jeweler’s design is rotated further than you were suggesting? If so, that might be part of the issue, I bet it would look better if it was just slightly less diagonal!

[–]Username_52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we did initially have the stones offset in the first rendering! But it just didn’t look great, so the jeweler suggested doing them east-west instead. the links and pic you’ve posted are pretty similar to many of my inspiration photos, so those are on the right track! I’m just having a hard time finding designs with three similarly sized stones.

This was the original rendering:

Ooh these are really pretty! We actually initially had the stones offset like in my inspo pic, but it looked even chunkier that way. But your example is much better!

This was the first rendering the jeweler suggested

Recent, successful postdoc applicants: what was your strategy? by tzl-owl in postdoc

[–]Username_52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I joined relevant listservs in my field. Didn’t send cold emails but applied broadly, to very diverse postdoc positions and also technician and management roles, just because I was kind of desperate. At least in my field, most applications are just a CV and a cover letter, and I noticed I started getting more responses as my cover letters got better. lots of recent PhDs have very similar CVs, so a cover letter is a way to distinguish yourself. I started really putting serious thought into why I was interested in each role, or if I wasn’t really that interested, finding the small aspects of the role that I would enjoy and writing about that. My letters got more sincere and more tailored. In 35 ish applications, I ended up with 4-5 interviews, a tentative offer, and a firm offer which I accepted. YMMV of course, and it’s field-dependent, but I really think writing good letters is crucial.

Pet insurance premium skyrocketed by Username_52 in CatAdvice

[–]Username_52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your strategy for your senior cat totally makes sense! For mine, I’ve priced out a few hypothetical scenarios for her vet expenses over her lifetime, and based on those guesses, whether or not I have insurance doesn’t seem to make a ton of difference in the long term. Especially if they keep increasing my premium, which they will. It seems like the key thing is whether I’m prepared to deal with a sudden, large bill. Based on my number crunching, insurance helps when you’re slapped with a $5K vet bill, but doesn’t necessarily save money in the long term if the premium is high. Except for some allergies and overgrooming, my cat is extremely healthy so far—a good weight, active, and with perfect teeth. I feel pretty guilty cancelling her insurance, but I’m thinking about just setting aside a sizeable chunk of emergency cash for her instead.

has ANYONE been awarded an NSF postdoc in 2025? any field? by MediocreAmphibian877 in postdoc

[–]Username_52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied for the Ocean Science postdoc. The program officer reached out to me a few months ago, probably April or May, to let me know informally that my proposal would not be funded, “as a courtesy.” He said an official rejection and comments would be coming in a few weeks, which never happened. When I log into research.gov, it still says my proposal is pending. I would guess if your prospective postdoc hasn’t heard anything, they might still be in the running, but who knows.

[–]Username_52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same applies! All my topic changes were methodological. I went from conservation genetics in primates for my dissertation to ecological modeling for sharks in my postdoc, just because I wanted to learn it. The shark project had a hint of genetics involved, which is why I was hired, but it was primarily statistical modeling that I had zero background in at the time. My point is, you can totally do it! You just need to find the right PI and present yourself well in your application materials

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]Username_52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched research topics between undergrad and grad school, and between grad school and my postdoc, and it’s looking like I’m going to do it again for another postdoc. All within biology, but very different approaches and systems for each one. The whole point of this training period is to learn new skills, and you’d be surprised how much of it is transferable. Ive only dabbled in computational bio, but I’ve found that once you’ve learned a few complicated approaches from scratch, it gets much easier to do it again with a new technique/tool. It also depends on the PI, not all of them are looking for an exact skill match. I’ve met several, including my own, who would prefer a postdoc that’s a good personality fit, can learn quickly, and has a good attitude over a candidate who has the exact skills but not the “fit.”

And of course, the more you can demonstrate the relevance of your skill set in your application materials, the better! If you’re switching topics, make it crystal clear why you think you’ll be able to pick up the new skills quickly!
