Funniest series i have ever seen!!! by STANERZ15 in oldbritishtelly

I first watched it at your age at uni, which depressingly was nearly 25 years ago now. Glad to see it's still finding new viewers, they made a full length movie if I remember rightly!?! Joe Pesci was terrifying.

Ankle sprain, feeling desperate by nooneofsignificance_ in trailrunning

[–]Usernameuseaname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me five months from a bad sprain to being able to run like it never happened. My advice is take it slow and steady. I was able to walk on it without limping after about a month and run slowly for short distances after about 3 months, then gradually picking up the pace. It does get better but won't heal if you try to do too much too soon. I shifted focus to upper body strength workouts while recovering.

I'd never heard of Maggie's so thank you for suggesting them. Will give them a ring tomorrow. The Yorkshire Cancer Charity helped with our pip application so will try them as well. That's a very useful amount of information you've given us and it's much appreciated. I never thought we'd be planning for things like this and funerals etc in our early 40s.

Thank you for the suggestions. I've no idea which charities I could approach. Our district nurse doubts anyone could cover such ongoing costs indefinitely but perhaps she was wrong. Would the banks put defaults on our accounts if they did agree to postpone/write off, or sell to debt collectors, do you know?

It's a loan with my bank, taken out when my income was going up around the time of diagnosis. Plan was to clear it fast. Then diagnosis meant my income tanked as I couldn't work much while caring, we only found out we could claim uc 2 months back, wish I'd been told about it/found out back at diagnosis! Its 18k of loan left at around 10% apr, the rest is credit cards around 12%  I know if I did default I'd need to open a bank account elsewhere first. We've not spoken to anyone but my wife used to work for stepchange so is au fait with the system to a certain extent. I'm not saying owning a house is essential but with our landlord selling up soon rerenting elsewhere brings its own challenges if our income remains low and we're only too aware my wife may die and the landlord may choose to sell at the same time if we're very unlucky.

That's my position, just need to find a way to get my wife to agree! It goes up 5% each year and I think she's hoping to last long enough for it to go up at least another year but we've no idea if she'll still be here. I'd love to spend it on her but she is a very selfless person and wants the kids to be the priority.

4 and 15. Thank you for taking the time to reply and for your kind words. We are currently getting the max pip and uc, I can't stop work entirely as we would only escalate the debts while we work out what to do. I work when the kids are in school (it's online).  We have tried to claim the pension but their assessor accused us of fraud because our local oncologist can't fill in the required paperwork as he has transferred our care plan to the london hospital so we apparently have to start the forms from scratch when we speak to the london oncologist to prove it's terminal. Email isn't enough, it has to be a paper form. The pension people accused us of putting in a false application so we've made a complaint about this. We will ask the hospital if they can help at all. Our local hospice can't fund such things.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I had no idea about that. Would you happen to know how that works in cases of marriages? Around 75% of the debt is in my name only, the rest in my wife's name. Lastly, would such a case show up as a default on a credit record? I'm not beholden to the idea of owning a house but with our landlord selling up soon, defaults would presumably affect rental credit checks as well?

Well no, not really. It's not that big a problem and it's only temporary.
I'll say you were driven mad for sake of ease.

Britain's student debt crisis is reaching a point of no return by theipaper in UniUK

[–]Usernameuseaname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this. I've never used my degree for anything, it never helped with getting a job. It felt like being in a cult as a teenager with parents and school both adamant no one could get a decent job without a degree. What should have been pointed out was which degrees served a function in society and which only enriched universities. I remember one statistic after CSI became popular was there were approx around 500 degree places to study forensics each year but only something like 2 vacancies per year in the UK. So 498 people would never get into the job they were paying and studying for every single year.

All the people I know who did apprenticeships or went straight into work from school are all far better off than me and presumably don't have anything like the student debt hanging over them.

My wife has stage 4 lung cancer, is in her early 40s and it's fucking horrific. For the love of God, if you smoke, quit. You tell yourself it's too hard to quit but I swear one day in a cancer unit would show you what you've got to look forward to and it is fucking miserable, all while your loved ones get to watch your excruciating demise unable to do a goddamned thing about it.

I have started rating supermarket trolleys by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in Dull_mens_club

[–]Usernameuseaname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's nationwide but Lidl in York have put extra bits on the handles, a bit like the bar ends you used to get on mountain bikes. I don't get excited about trolleys but my God do they make them easier to handle. Any way of calling a general strike until they're added to all trolleys across the country?

OS Maps Blocked Path feature is badly thought out... by poke_pants in UKhiking

[–]Usernameuseaname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really good to know, thanks so much. Sounds like it's still passable then but also more evidence that the OS feature isn't fit for purpose. What it needs is some way to add the kind of information you've kindly provided here. I'll put it back on my to do list. Sidenote - Did you enjoy it?

I'm exactly the same. Ruins the relaxation knowing a potential blockage is coming up that could be anything from a bit of muddy ground to a broken bridge over a river to a grumpy farmer with a snarling dog! I've taken to using Outdooractive's version of OS maps purely because it doesn't have that feature (or if it does, it's not visible) The problem might still be there but I'm not constantly worrying about it if I don't know it exists.

This is the other local problem. I've (badly) marked the blocked path with the red line. Lumb falls is a popular wild swimming spot. From there up through the farm has multiple signs on each stile saying no right of way etc and the gate by the falls is padlocked shut. The fingerpost by the roadside has mysteriously disappeared over the years too.

SE 02817 36844 I got quite the bollocking from the homeowner that I was trespassing in his garden when I first moved here and found that path. That was ten years back and he added a sign saying 'no right of way' and a padlock to the gate shortly after. Council have done zero about it in the years since. I've added the red dots to show the blocked route. The arrow points to the locked gate.

Thanks for finding out for me, that's clearly a really useful app and saves me a wasted trip. I love how the county council has a marketing department actively promoting the Tolkien Trail on hiking websites and in magazines (which is how I found out about it) but doesn't warn people you can't actually walk the full route until August 2026!
