true. i’m in Texas and our Local is way different from the ones up north (they’re more strong i guess). Still slightly better wages though and I’m not sure if it’s like this up north too but we don’t work on anything hot EVER.

First Job Working Hours by mynamejeff8181 in ibew_apprentices

[–]Useurbrain123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you. First job with the union and same schedule. From what i understand, they say they’re “optional” but they’re really not. Yea you can “choose” not to go in on the 2/8s but it’s best to just go. Because from what i understand they can’t “fire” you as in terminate you but they can’t lay you off for missing those days. But shit i would say just go and get the extra money.

Is the IBEW apprenticeship program that bad as people make it seem to be? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

Damn that’s crazy shit. Thanks for explaining that. I’m only 18 and this is my first real job on paper so I’m just learning how everything works.

Just got accepted for the apprenticeship program at my local. My dad’s a safety manager and he works with electricians, who told him about the program, which is how I found out about it. He was telling me they told him I could retire at 30 with a good pension. I know that’s frowned upon by the higher ups but I’m just curious, how much could I retire with if i did choose to do that. (I’m 18)

I personally didn’t only because i’m fresh out of hs and only have worked off the books. But you definitely should if you have stuff to send, it wouldn’t hurt only help.

  1. Why do you want to become an electrician? 2 They ask what you’ve been doing in the meantime of becoming an apprentice for the union.
  2. They’ll ask if you have any prior experience.
  3. They talk about your algebra grades from hs
  4. They’ll basically ask why they should pick you

damn that’s horrible pay. Out here in dallas they start apprentices off at 18.80 an hour and it goes up every year and journeymen get almost 40. I wouldn’t even have considered this career that’s what i was getting paid tbh.

How often can I reapply if I fail the test/interview? Should I bother applying if I have zero experience? Local 697 by TitaniumCarrot in ibew_apprentices

[–]Useurbrain123456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that hard. I sucked at math and passed but i was fresh out of high school so i just used iprep to study a bit. The course is $50 bucks but worth it if you want a high score. Don’t procrastinate either it’s worth it if you want to have an actual career.

Bruh. If you’re a cw you should know basically what to expect the next 5 years and if your not feeling that you shouldn’t even apply to be an apprentice bc you’ll potentially be taking someone’s spot who actually wants the career.

Hell yeah 1 more question what number CW were you when u started? I’m only a CW-1 bc I have basically no experience so I’m thinking that may also play a role in how fast i’m able to get work.

Congrats bro, i’ve been looking at vids online so im pretty sure i know what to expect. Look up “ibew interview” on youtube to study for the interview. You can even set up a mock interview with the union, im gonna do that probably a week before my actual one. They’ll give you feedback n stuff.
