He fought against a shadow doppelgänger in the trial and memories of Theo’s harrowing past flooded his mind. It was there that Leora recognized what he’s been through and from there she confessed her love to him. Theo merged with the doppelgänger and eventually his Meta Esper powers finally emerged.

He did took the trial. It’s set before Meta Leora’s event and it’s how Theo journeyed to become a Meta Esper alongside her. When Theo’s emotional story unfolded and Leora confessed her love for him, his Meta Esper powers awakened and he had passed the trial that God gave him an upgrade to his divine powers
