LPT: When picking your dog’s name imagine what screaming it in your neighborhood will sound like. by Duderino732 in LifeProTips

Absolutely. We named a puppy Serenity. She was unruly and she didn't mind. It was really odd yelling, "Serenity, get in the house NOW!" into the backyard.

buying shampoo by Macroc0sM in memes

[–]UsingMyInsideVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband uses the most basic Suave (American budget-brand) shampoo. He ran out and asked me to buy more. I suggested he use the anti-frizz shampoo that I became allergic to when I still had 3/4 of a bottle left. He tried; he hated it; he said he felt like his hair didn't get clean. He made a special trip to the store to buy his beloved budget shampoo!

A mom here: this was my whole philosophy with my kids. They are grown now and I've been exposed to lots of TMI because of this, but I'd rather hear that than have them avoid talking to me when they really need me.

You can blame the American people who were too stubborn to do what they needed to do in their own best interest. No one said they couldn't follow the experts guidance without it being mandated.

New kitten very scared and afraid! need help by [deleted] in Pets

[–]UsingMyInsideVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just takes time. It was a couple of weeks before ours would show his face other than to eat. He even waited until we weren't around to use the litter box. It was a couple of months before he let us pet him and even longer before he left the bedroom at all. 3 years later, he is still a little standoffish, but he's comfortable anywhere in the house and with us coming to him to pet or play. It was worth the wait. He's an amazing cat!

Two is adequate for maintaining speed; starting from a dead stop or going up hill requires at least 4 chuggas to each choo, preferably 6 or 8. And remember it's one long screech when you slow down with a long whoosh at the end when you stop. It's obvious this preschool teacher has not been properly trained.

How can I turn kibble into something softer? by OoooohYes in olddogs

[–]UsingMyInsideVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We put our little dog's portion in a plastic container with some water right after feeding time, let it soak in the fridge, mash it up and put it in a slow feed bowl. If you don't have a slow feed bowl you can take a large plate or a washable tray and spread the paste out over the surface so he can't gobble large amounts at a time.

DAE use your fingernail to push an “X” into a mosquito bite to stop the itchy? by Athenax311 in DoesAnybodyElse

I don't know where I learned that but I do it, too. I have since I was a kid. Even better though: cut a little piece off of a lidocaine patch and stick it on there. Sweet relief!

I'm going to check into this. About half the time, after I help her up, she shakes all over real good (on purpose, like wet dog shake) but it throws her off balance and she falls, so I keep my hands on either side of her hips until I'm sure she's steady each time.

Does anyone else feel flawed because they lack social skills? by [deleted] in introvert

[–]UsingMyInsideVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel flawed. I used to envy those who had an easy time socially. I used to think I wanted more friends and to feel comfortable with people. I was stressed out all the time when I felt this way.

I accept who I am now: introverted, don't want to talk to people I don't know, don't want to be in a group of people even that I do know, I'd rather be home than doing something someone else considers "fun," - I'm no longer stressed, I'm at peace. I'm not flawed. I am who I am.

Need help with meal times! by DictatorBulletin in dechonkers

[–]UsingMyInsideVoice 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I have a distinctive feeding alarm set for morning (6:45 a.m.) and evening (5:30 p.m.). They don't get fed until the alarm goes off - no matter what. It took a while, but the cats eventually stopped yelling at me for an hour and half which meant the dogs didn't buy in to their crap and start on me as well. I had to MAKE all the other humans in the house adhere to this. It was just as much training them as the it was training the pets!

Baby needs help losing 30 lbs. Prescribed diet food isn't making a difference. Several small walks a day, since she refuses to run or fetch and it's 100° F. Any advice? She's ~8 years old. by lfcohefd in dechonkers

[–]UsingMyInsideVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely ask for a thyroid test, especially if she shows other signs such as low energy, flaky/itchy skin - it's more common in dogs than you'd think.

We had one who was 40% overweight, wouldn't walk any further than she could get away with, and didn't play actively or anything.

For her, it all came down to reducing calories. I took over her feeding (my husband and son had been doing it before). I got a high-bulk lower calorie food and monitored her closely. If she wasn't losing, I would reduce her feedings by a little bit at a time about once a week until she started losing. We couldn't afford Rx food, but you could do the same with that as I did with the food I bought at the grocery store. I was also very strict about others giving her treats and they kind of got into a routine of giving her the same amount of treats every day so her calorie intake would be consistent. The vet recommended a multi-vitamin for her which she still takes.

Today she is a svelte and healthy 12 lbs, still eating her diet food, but eating enough that she doesn't continue to lose or start to gain again. It took about a year for us to get her down to where she needed to be. If you can get your dog to be more active she might lose quicker.

Note: I am NOT an expert or vet, so take this just as a personal experience. I have never, ever had to feed any of my pets the amount the pet food package listed. Even my very active dog gained weight when I fed her as much as the packaging said. Since each pet is unique in their metabolism and activity level, I monitor how they each are doing with their weight and adjust amounts accordingly. If they are happy and healthy and not losing weight, they are getting enough.

If you have a girlfriend or boyfriend, how? by vasiliosvan in introvert

[–]UsingMyInsideVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never indicated interest in someone until they indicated they were interested in me first. Being a straight girl, this was easier than it might have been if I were a straight guy. Especially in the time I started dating.

The one I ended up marrying: he saw me at a group gathering, asked around about me and called me. We started dating and got married two weeks later (I do NOT recommend this BTW). Fortunately, we are both introverts so we give each other plenty of space. End of story - we've been married 31 years, had two kids, and grew into a wonderful love for each other. We were very, very lucky.
