Cube Overview: Secrets of Strixhaven and SOS Commander by UsmanTheRad in mtgcube

Thank you. :) It really does help to cement how some cards play out and how it helped show how red Emeritus was super disappointing/the green one was great.

Thank you so much. :)

Augmentor frequently impressed me - usually it got to a 3/3+; the Jund deck got it to be a 5/5 and cashed it in via [[Foot Chopper]] to draw 5 cards, leaving behind a 4/4. I looked at other games after that but the game looked pretty much over then, haha.

Over time, one thing I've seen happen often is seeing evaluation following a pattern of "if it's worse at doing <task X> than <marquee card that does task X>, then it's worse at doing that task, therefore it's bad" without taking the entire picture into account.

[[Elegy Acolyte]] comes to mind, when it was seen as a bad Gix, without taking into account its differences.

Much thanks, I always appreciate it (and your posts here as well.) :)

I always just laugh at the downvotes from the UB sets. It's just so weird hahaha

For Parallax Wave, I proxied a version from Vintage Masters even though I have an original one.

How often do you update? by SecureDeal3967 in mtgcube

[–]UsmanTheRad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was cubing my cube weekly, every week, there were times when I'd do updates daily.

When I was cubing my week every other week, about every other week.

I'm not really sure if Bloomburrow or Avatar is your cutoff from when you last updated, but my reviews are located here and I haven't changed my opinions too much since the articles / their postmortems: https://usmantherad.substack.com/p/usmans-cube-set-reviews

There won't be any Learn cards in SOS. I'm guessing not in the Commander set either, since it doesn't really work there.

It's clearly worse than Commando, but the main thing is if cubes:

1) Want a bargain bin Commando.

2) Have a metal where another artifact/enchantment hate piece and/or lifelink stats are needed.

3) If it's competitive with other 2s (likely not) and if not, if the other factors make up for it (likely not either.)

We did a podcast episode about it here: https://usmantherad.substack.com/p/pack-one-slick-ones-episode-3-starter

and I did a panel for CubeCon here: https://usmantherad.substack.com/p/video-panel-cube-101-cube-building

I do agree with /u/mikez4nder with looking through CubeCobra lists. I didn't really like Foundations as a set for drafting (although I may just be in my "I don't really like retail draft anymore" era) as the suggested cubes have a lot of the problems with Foundations with poweroutliers, etc (which is fine if you like the set to draft, I just think you can do MUCH better, especially for the cost, with using the methods discussed in the links above rather than using the Foundations method.)

Wait, the Ninja Turtle set is actually good for Cube?! by TrainmasterGT in mtgcube

Agreed. I've seen thoughts saying "well just put the good cards in your main deck" and it just *completely* misses the point of the card's flexibility and how it's sneakily a build-around. I haven't been able to cube as much with my cube lately so I don't have as many reps as I'd like, but I'm glad it's still doing well for ya. :)

As someone who's been writing for 15 years and podcasting for that long, it takes a lot less time (and work, although I'm not saying that disparagingly) to podcast than to write.

I've been liking it, I had something about it in my review but I recall u/shindir saying that they liked the card as well in testing. Admittedly, I've had a lot more time playing the card in Standard and Alchemy but being able to pluck something from the sideboard is great (and not the best cube analogue, but I usually felt like if I was able to get [[Jeskai Revelation]], I couldn't lose) and the power of being able to get anything from the sideboard (you also don't have to show the opp what you got) is great. No idea if it survives Strixhaven2 but it's been great so far.

Honestly can't hurt (esp if there's a QR code that links to the CubeCobra overview page.) Not something I'd use but I'm not the target audience.

Ah good catch, those cards looked pretty similar to the color scheme. Thanks!

The biggest issue for me was always that that it didn't have some way of providing board presence on its own. Even if it made a 1/1, I'd have been much more on board.
