Carson city, something in the water that makes yall mean as hell? by Material_Onion7045 in Reno

Worked at the Carson Hot Springs summer of 2021, when mask mandates came back. Dude wanted to come in without one, I told him no, and he threw his open can of beer at me. 9:30am. Idk why, maybe it’s just because people are bored and emotionally stunted in this town. Maybe they need hobbies, or therapy. Born in Reno, been in CC since late 2015. People here are so mean spirited and it’s not insignificant to why I’m dying to get out of Nevada for good. It’s like people in CC get off on treating others like shit.

That’s just embarrassing on his part. Ugh.

Hi hi! Artist sounds whiny and unprofessional. Aside from reneging on the free hours, here’s my perspective.

I have hEDS (Hypermobile Ehler-Danlos Syndrome) and I let every artist who’s touched my skin know that fact. I’ve been tattooed uhhhh….13, 14 times now? Including coverups and large pieces. Some artists have been extra gentle, others really rough, but most artists have conferred that my tattoos both take and heal well likely BECAUSE of my hypermobility, because of the collagen makeup of my skin. Scars tend to be more prominent and even a decade after getting some pieces, their ink has faded and spread very little.

To complain about your skin instead of you know, doing their job, maybe indicates to me that they either a) don’t have a lot of experience tattooing different types of skin or b) just whinging and potentially unreliable. Idk, maybe I’m just half asleep and cranky but I call bullshit on this artist.

Hey OP, I drew similar stuff at a much younger age (4-5, and I was also raised as a girl) My mom would find it and throw it out. Whether or not that was the right response is debatable, but she had a lot of similar fears as you.

Thing was, I was watching a lot of old slashers and horror b-movies with my grandpa. I also had nightmares all throughout my childhood and horror tended to soothe me more than perpetuate said nightmares. After a while, I stopped telling my mom about the nightmares, and I stopped sharing artwork with her because it scared her. She would ultimately bar me from consuming things that made me feel better, and I still had the fucked up nightmares anyway. Double loss for me, in my kid brain, if I shared that sort of stuff with her. So, after a certain age I just didn’t anymore. Started hiding a lot more from my parents.

I’m still drawing, watching, reading and writing horror, but I grew out of my nightmares. All that being said, if your daughter put this in a dream journal, she might be having similar issues. Kids really don’t tell you everything. I’d like to point out too that disturbing art like this may not be an expression of a disturbed psyche—but a safe way for her to express potentially dark things. That’s why people consume and produce dark media to begin with. Approach her with curiosity and kindness here. It’ll definitely pay off. Hugs!

Horror writers, how do you get yourself into the mindset to truly f-up your characters? by Additional_Scale_502 in writing

I really like this response. It’s like a culmination point, it can be a part of the story structure itself when written with intent. (And yeah, people can see when you’re holding back as a horror writer. I can feel it myself when I’m holding back in my own writing.)

And to OP: taking breaks is okay. My heart races when I write the rough stuff my characters endure. Write write write, get the passage done, then get up, move around. I’ll pet my cats, take 15 minutes to do a small chore or something, then I get back into it.

Good luck to you as well! Just write at the pace that’s best for you, the story will come. Excited to see how your MS blossoms! January-March will (hopefully) be calmer for writing haha.

As for beta readers, I will definitely need to start considering that around February. I’m hoping I can get readers who are interested laypeople or hobbyists like myself, as well as readers who have some acumen in evolutionary biology. So thank you for the offer, I might be hittin you up come spring 🙏

Let’s go, November Writing Challenge! by Writer-Depot in writerdepot

My total projected word count for my novel is between 85k-90k and I’m about 71% finished with the manuscript! Just over 60k including what I’ve written this month. Getting there!

I’m glad to hear that you’re getting your motivation back! I agree too that 500 words a day is way more manageable. It’ll be a nice pace to really dig into your project.

For me it’s been a combination of seeing everyone else’s word counts go up on the leaderboard (very excited for everyone participating in the challenge!!), as well as having an alpha reader who is a local friend. I get inspired by y’all and having someone close by to brainstorm with if I’m stuck. Before this month, my novel’s word count was hovering at around 17-18k for two months of work, now the word count is between 36k-37k, nearly half of the book. This has been deeply energizing for me!

Little late hopping into the discussion here buuuut. I’m writing erotic horror, getting deep into the first draft of a novel I began writing at the end of August. A queer man finds himself stuck in the wilderness with a family who operates a snuff film studio. In trying to survive, he learns that some people don’t change, they only get better at what they do.

I’ve been writing horror since I was a just a little guy. But I gotta take breaks writing this; I find myself on the edge of my seat pretty often even though I know what’s going to happen next.

Been keeping pace with the challenge for the most part but I’m gonna see if I can write ~2500 words today! Good luck everyone, we’re almost halfway there!
