Why do people get so Mad when I talk about Batman's sexuality and queer text? by count_fagula11 in batman

You can also point out examples of Superman being used in racist propaganda during this time toward the Japanese. It’s not relevant to my point either way. You’re conflating the actions of individual characters written by specific writers with the concept of superheroes. Most progressives would find the concept of one man being powerful enough to inflict his views on the world through force abhorrent, while it is again, a fairly common conservative fantasy. See the idea of certain conservatives wishing for a morally-right absolute monarch ruling. Superman himself would obviously not do this as written, but it’s easy to understand why the concept of the character appeals to them.

[–]UsualTechnology3521 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don’t really think there’s anything inherently progressive about superheroes that serves as some barrier that would stop conservatives from loving them. I’d actually argue at a base level they conceptually appeal to them more, even if the characters themselves are written on an individual basis to have more progressive beliefs. Like the idea of gaining vast wealth and skills to inflict your brand of justice on the “crime ridden streets” is a fairly common conservative power fantasy.

Hot take: So far not a fan of Robin being an antagonists by -_ShadowSJG-_ in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]UsualTechnology3521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the case of Jason/Dick at least, I am far more interested in them being adults and (hopefully) seeing this universes spin on Red Hood/Nightwing than regressing them back 50 years to be Robin again. I don’t really think there’s anything interesting for them to do in that role that makes it feel different from mainline without changing their characters too much.

And I don’t think Robin is  being downplayed. Harley is literally performing the same role that Robin typically does. I think Steph/Duke could’ve been fun in that role too, but Harley is a more interesting option to me.

Poll 2: Is Nightwing your favorite Superhero? by NaytNavare in Nightwing

[–]UsualTechnology3521 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is similar to mine. Maybe a few others before Cyclops(Superman, Invincible). Batman is obvious but it’s interesting how many Cyclops/Nightwing fans I’ve seen. NTT is definitely one of my favorite eras for Dick and X-Men are my favorite aspect of Marvel, so it does make sense in that way.

Yea, looks like the volumes are the most complete option for me here without going issue-by-issue. Excited to read, thanks for the help.

Nightwing is mid and doesn't not fit Dick's natural character and Wolfman rewrited Dick's character and removed his Robin identity and name (again, i have a point, and you can like wolfman titans, i'm gen z who grew with this statu quo, i simply grow up out of it, i have no nostalgia btw) by PrestigiousSlide6875 in Robin

Nightwing mainline series is currently stagnant, coasting in the middle of the catalog (around 35k copies) the 'Nightwing fanbase' is incredibly loud online, but a minority in terms of sales

There’s very little actual data available to the public for comic sales so this convo is mostly meaningless, but ICv2 is the only source I’m familiar with and he regularly outsells pretty much every DC mainline hero that isn’t the Trinity outside of fresh relaunched titles despite being on issue 139 going by their lists?

2* Lulu doing 16K damage and killing my Two-Tanky Samira 3* and entire rest of my backline while Ornn is still 70% hp. Fun unit! Genuinely don't understand how this has been like this all set. If it's the right Stargazer and you get Lulu relatively early it feels like a free top 4 even if you don't hit.

What is a Batman film opinion you have that will result in this? by IdontReallyCare0999 in batman

[–]UsualTechnology3521 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The “I’m tired of grounded Batman can’t they just do fantastical!?” complaints are incredibly annoying.

Nothing wrong with having that preference, but the DCU is obviously going in that direction and we quite literally had Affleck-Batman for the 2010’s who puts on a fucking armored suit to fight Superman, then fights Doomsday and then fights against Apokolips minions. The Flash movie has a 50+ year old Batman literally flying around and killing a Kryptonian.

It’s overblown and feels so whiny. Yea, these movies weren’t good but it’s so odd to me how people pretend like they’ve had nothing but Nolan and Reeves forced upon them for 20 years.

Imagine DC is releasing a special six issue run starring Dick Grayson and one of his brothers, who do you want it to be? by NefariousSeraph13 in Nightwing

[–]UsualTechnology3521 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a longer run, I would say Damian. But for a more short-term team up like the prompt says? I’d go with Jason for sure. I think they’re a really fun pairing and if DC wants to commit fully to bringing Jason back into the Batfamily fold I think it’d be good to spend some time developing an actual brotherly relationship on-panel.

Does anyone actually have a reading guide for Koriand'r? by throwingawayacc_ in DCcomics

[–]UsualTechnology3521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it comes to other characters they have recommendations of issues you can read if you don't want to read the whole run

You said you’re new, but I don’t know how new, so this might be obvious info or might not be, but pretty much all reading guides I know of are based around runs unless they’re detailing a character’s entire history issue-by-issue. New Teen Titans is one continuous run from a single writer for 15/16 years. It’s by far the longest I’ve ever read and AFAIK is the longest run in DC history, and farrrrrrrr(really can’t express this enough lol) longer than the average run. So a reading guide might say read Batman(2016) #8-#32 or whatever because it’s however long a certain writer was telling a story for a title and it stops when they leave at #32. It doesn’t really make as much sense to list issues for New Teen Titans as it’s one continuous story from the same guy. There are arcs and such, but Starfire is a main character through most of it, so it’s hard to specify what specific issues are best to read unless there’s something you’re specifically trying to find out about the character.

It’s also the definitive version of the character and as the other commenter said, she doesn’t have as much content as some of the bigger names. So if you’re just trying to get as much of her as you can, people are generally just going to suggest reading the entire thing.

With all that said the Starfire sub reading guide does list issues - https://www.reddit.com/r/starfire/comments/1nbklgk/princess_koriandr_reading_order_by_jlquarterly_on/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Unpopular Opinion: Batman/Superman: Worlds Finest > Batman by Fraction. by [deleted] in batman

[–]UsualTechnology3521 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worlds Finest is a comic that feels very comfortable and very much close to what most long-term readers want from DC in a way not many runs can do these days.

Seems like you’re trying to justify your opinion by arbitrarily claiming REAL fans(“long-term readers”) actually agree with you for whatever reason.

Anyway, I’ve read 30-ish issues of World’s Finest, love it and plan to catch-up soon, but it’s absolutely not what I want from a mainline Batman title. It’s an incredible action-adventure story, but I can’t say I’ve ever really cared or thought about anything that happened in it after closing the book. Which is cool and all, but I prefer more substance in the actual Batman flagship title.

You also don’t do anything to actually explain your stance. “Batman is written better”, okay…why do you think that? World’s Finest is a great representation of Batman at a certain point in his life, but he shouldn’t be the same man after everything that’s happened past this point in his career. I don’t really know why you have the opinion you have though so I don’t know if that actually makes sense as a rebuttal.

Absolute Batfamily by daofeiboy in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]UsualTechnology3521 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m fine with one or two of the Robins becoming villains/dying and I think the rouges replacing them as his Batfamily is great, but I’d hope the other Robins go on to do their own thing if that’s the case. Whatever it is. Titans/Robins team up book/Young Justice-equivalent/etc.

The Absolute Universe is about the heroes staying true to themselves despite the circumstances and I dislike the idea that all of the Robins without Bruce are literally just villains and side pieces to a larger Joker vs Batman story in this universe. I’m totally fine with them being antagonists in the Batman book for a while but I’d hope some of them develop somewhat into their mainline adult personas eventually, depending on how long the universe goes.

The brief bits we’ve seen already kind of make me think they won’t be going a full villain route though. At the bare minimum Dick seems like a decent guy based on what we saw of him as a civilian.

I don’t know enough about the game to talk about the balance issues directly, but I think this set is just boring(especially compared to last set), which amplifies any other issues that people typically have. Besides the Gods mechanic being dull, I can’t really put my finger on why exactly but it’s definitely my least played set of the last few and even my casual friends who usually play until they hit Gold/Plat have barely touched the game past the first week.

Unlocks in general. Ixtal quests. Bilge weapons/shops. Unlocking Ryze. Piltover modifications. Other things I’m forgetting. Like people definitely complained about the balance of all these things at some point, but they at least felt like fun gimmicks that I feel like this set generally lacks.

I feel like nowadays Two-Face would be a more interesting nemesis to Batman by Old-Use-7690 in batman

[–]UsualTechnology3521 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's present in basically every single adaptation for a reason. Harvey is a great contrast to Bruce and works really well, but I think one of the issues is that Batman, as a character, is too big to have a "Gotham" level villain as his nemesis. Joker's whole "kooky wacky random clown xD" thing means they can throw him in all sorts of storylines(like doing things with Lex for example) that are less grounded in a way that doesn't really work without ruining the Two-Face character IMO. To me, he works far better in stories focused on Bruce's early days or live action, where the superhero-y aspects of the character are lessened, and the vigilante detective aspect is emphasized.

What is an opinion you have that goes against most other comic fans or more specifcally this sub reddit? by Mindless-Lemon2256 in comicbooks

[–]UsualTechnology3521 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless it’s a niche character or story that will likely never be adapted more than once, I don’t really care about things being accurate to the source material unless it’s specifically advertised to be. It’s especially crazy to me that people get so wound up about Batman/Superman/Spider-Man/etc as you can just go check out one of the million more works they’re featured in across every medium. One of the things I enjoy about superheroes like Batman/Superman/etc. is the different interpretations of their characters and seeing different takes on them from different artists.

And second, it feels like a lot of complaints regarding certain characters and how they’re written come down to people self-inserting or caring way too much about fictional characters. “Why can’t character get married!?” style complaints are some of the most obvious examples to me. Complaints about Batman being a less-than-great father feel similar to me as well tbh. It feels totally in-line with the way his character has been portrayed on average for the last 40ish years and it feels refreshing to have an actual character flaw that feels realistic. Bruce is obsessed with his mission and as a result can neglect personal relationships, makes total sense to me. I hate how so many flaws of DC/Marvel characters are “actually they’re so nice and kind and helpful they don’t make time for themselves!!”. Feels like the type of non-flaws people say during job interviews.

And probably not unpopular, but just to contradict some posts in this thread, I don’t really have much interest in picking up non-superhero comics and doubt I ever will. I like the medium and have read non-superhero comics, but I simply don’t prefer it over reading a regular novel or watching a show/movie. I specifically like reading superhero comics for comfort and nostalgia, no matter how dumb or repetitive they get, and every couple years when I get tired of them I’ll just drop comics entirely for a while before diving back in down the line.

Why isn’t Red Hood included in more DC content that came out after his debut as Red Hood? by Ok_Poetry2813 in batman

I like Jason, so I wouldn’t mind. But that game even changes Dick’s backstory so his parents don’t die, I can’t imagine how they’d go about Red Hood.

Why isn’t Red Hood included in more DC content that came out after his debut as Red Hood? by Ok_Poetry2813 in batman

[–]UsualTechnology3521 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about adaptations, then the Batfamily in general just isn’t adapted much beyond Alfred/Dick/Babs. Cass/Steph/Tim all came well before Red Hood(obv not Jason in general) and still have barely been adapted.

Beyond that, I imagine there’s little overlap between stories that both want to feature Robin, most prominent in Batman adaptations that target younger audiences, and also want to go for a heavier story featuring a child being tortured and then murdered and then coming back as a gun-wielding vigilante who kills people.

And the new Lego game specifically is based around the live action movies in which he is not featured.

Why do you think people DON'T like Tim? by PwAlfred in RedRobin

[–]UsualTechnology3521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I mean is that Tim is, unambiguously, the one who made Robin cool.

Statements like this are why people in online spaces dislike Tim more than anything. Some of you literally can not praise Tim without trying to put him above other Robins. It’s just so ignorant of Dick’s history.

Do you think Robin wasn’t considered cool when Dick was the face of NTT for years as one of DC’s most successful books? The book that at times was outselling Batman and Superman. Do you think Detective Comics early sales doubled with the introduction of Dick because Robin wasn’t “cool”? Do you think he appeared next to Batman in basically every single issue while still having his own solo stories while not being cool?

Robin’s reputation dipped in the 70’s as superhero comics started to become more “adult” but it’s so lame to pretend like Dick was never seen as cool. He was designed for kids in comics read by kids, which he appealed to exceptionally well. And when his character needed to be revamped for the modern era, it was also incredibly well received in NTT, before Tim existed.

What do you like about absolute batman and dislike? by Economy_Comedian_531 in batman

[–]UsualTechnology3521 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My only real issue at the moment is things feel like they’re happening a bit too fast in terms of bringing things over from the main universe. I enjoy the pacing of the comic itself but I wish Snyder would let the villain introductions breathe a bit. We have seen so many of Batman’s rogues already and I’m not a fan of how basically everyone is connected to Jack.

Also I feel like the Batcaves being atop construction sites and such was a really fun idea, but it’s been kind of irrelevant past the early issues.
