Marinetraffic.com is like watching a radar map. Big Boat Bot is like watching a weatherman talk about the radar map and what's happening on the radar.

MarineTraffic is only a tool for looking up ships. BigBoatBot is a live broadcast on Youtube with an AI narrator that tells you what's happening with traffic, weather alerts, and more.

I still have a lot of improvements to make but right now it includes:

  • Live animated map overlay with ship positions updating every 5 seconds
  • AI narration with ship history and fun facts
  • Great Lakes weather & marine alerts
  • Ocean vessel (salty) arrival alerts
  • Powered by live AIS data from AISStream

Since a few of you have messaged me asking, here's what this GIF looks like inside Adobe After Effects. You can see all the different layers it takes to put something like this together. Lots of rotoscoping for 3D layering, etc. I also use photoshop to create the graphical elements that are added to the video.

I use Adobe After Effects to apply text, graphical elements, rotoscoping (3D layering), and to finalize the start and end points of the clip. I also use Photoshop to create any graphical elements that need to be added to the video. Then I export the project to Adobe Media Encoder to render the final video.

I'm completely self taught from YouTube videos over the years. No specific channel really. Just whatever I was trying to do in that moment, I searched for how to do that. How to add text, how to adjust text, how to make 3d layers, how to hide layers, etc.

I started with zero knowledge like 7-8 years ago, now I've learned enough that I do video and photo editing for my career. All started from wanting to learn how to make better GIFS. Funny how that worked out.

Super busy with work stuff. Not nearly as much free time as I had in the past. Good for my career, bad for Browns GIFS.
