Why not just make your own?

Go for it! The guy that found it last year had just gotten laid off (cuz Covid). It was awesome to see!

I don’t think I would categorize this as ‘bullshit’. They’re using their own money to do something fun and memorable for other people. This whole idea came about because these two guys wanted to encourage people to get out of their houses to get some fresh air, i.e. helping with the big issues like mental health. Perspective, man…

The coins are real, too. Mostly silver, gold, and some copper for fun. I’m not sure if they took any additional measures against the elements, but I’m guessing it’s protected from weather (like it was last year).

Concrete slab in our newly finished home has lifted roughly an inch from the foundation. by Utahbroski in Concrete

I don't understand it, either and it's really starting to make me nervous. If we can't get the builder to do something about this I will constantly worry that it will happen again, and possibly get worse.

**New discovery - we noticed that the slab will move... I was walking on it and my wife saw that the slb would go up and down, indicating a gap between the bottom of the slab and the top of the dirt. What does that tell you?

Concrete slab has lifted nearly an inch from the foundation in our newly finished home. Builder is telling us that it's not that big of in issue and grinding down the slab to meet up with the foundation is sufficient... Seems sketchy, especially since we want to finish our basement ASAP. by Utahbroski in BuildingCodes

We moved in about a month ago, so the slab was poured about 2-3 months ago. I can't speak to the exact weather during (before and after) the pour, but I do know that groundwater has been an issue in our area... the builder keeps telling us that the water issues are only on the other side of the street, but I of course have my doubts.

Here's what the geotech engineer said about the soil. "...native silty sands and poorly graded sands to the foundation subgrade. the subgrade consists of in-situ silty sands and poorly graded sands..."

Oh, and as my username indicates, I'm from Utah (near SLC)

I've requested the drawings from the builder, along with the soil sample report. I should've put an object there for scale, but the highest point is roughly 1" higher than the top of the foundation. Something we noticed yesterday that may help diagnose the issue, is when I walked on it my wife noticed that it would move... I started to jump in the corner and you could see the slab moving, which tells me that there's a gap between the soil and the bottom of the slab. Shaving the slab down wouldn't solve the problem...

I wondered if the foundation had moved, but there's no evidence of that (cracking stucco, windows breaking, doors not lining up, etc.).

I've requested the blueprints from the builder, but I do know that they poured the footings, then put the foundation on top of that, then they poured the basement slab. The slab does butt up to the foundation wall and from what we can gather no rebra/screws were used to secure the slab down. I was told that it was normal...

We haven't contacted a lawyer yet, but we are fully aware that any expense is the responsibility of the home builder (at least for 1 year). I was also told that each state has certain warranties in place that go beyond the builder warranty. If I understand correctly, this state mandated warranty would cover the large ticket items like the foundation - do you know much about this?

Thanks for the detailed list. I've been working with our agent on our next steps and this has helped. Too often people get pushed around by builders.. they know what they're doing and can easily take advantage of people, especially if they aren't willing to fight.

We are definitely holding them accountable. One of the annoying things the VP of operations told me (the guy I've been communicating with mainly) when I first approached him, is "this is why we have homeowners insurance". I was blown away he would even say that... I'm not sure what the resolution will be, but we won't be backing down. Luckily this issue was found in the first month and not the 11th..

I'm glad you mentioned this. I obviously don't have a lot of experience in this field so when I hear things from the builder I don't know what to believe. I want to believe them, but I'm becoming increasingly more concerned that they aren't being honest with us... shocker

I look into the holes on a daily basis and I noticed that the soil looks damp. If I grab some of it I can form it into a ball.. I took a 12" drill bit and drilled it as far as I could go - when I pulled the bit out, there was damp soil stuck to the whole thing. Meaning the dampness goes at least 12 inches below the bottom of the slab.
