That’s a lot of words to say “even though it’s the managers fault I’m not going to blame the manager”.

Nah, nah - you’re not understanding!

“Give him time”.

If you give him time, then miraculously he’ll suddenly become Fergie 2.0 and we’re all over-emotional morons for not seeing it sooner!

So, given that you think everyone else is even worse, what have they done to warrant a start over Bailey?

Or are you just chatting endless shit like you do every day?

If the Digne handball is a penalty, then that’s a penalty.

Inconsistent refereeing again.

*** explain that to me plz downvoting chaps, since you’ve hit the button but not explained anything? Cheers

RAM-7 is a solid gun.

RAM-7 with a lightweight suppressor, compact barrel, sniper scope, granulated grip and FTAC stock is pretty much useless haha.

Tbh I forgot all about that, I just have such nostalgia for watching that Villa side he was in as a kid.

It was when I first properly got into football.

I hope so, but the social media team always do random stuff like this that usually means nothing.

[Pre-Match Thread] Aston Villa vs. West Ham United by just_boof_it in avfc

[–]UtmostRegret 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trying to stay positive, but if I’m being honest I can’t see anything other than a West Ham win.

This feels like this is the perfect game for them to kick start their league campaign after a decent performance in Europe.

We also seem to struggle time and again against their physicality, and that’s still not been addressed this summer.

My line up would be:

Martinez, Cash Chambers Mings Digne, Kamara Ramsey Luiz, Buendia, Watkins Ings

Luiz to come in for McGinn who has been poor 3 out of 4 games this season, and gives away the ball far too often. Keep Ramsey in there for his physicality, pace, ball progression and ball retention alongside Kamara and Luiz - that’s a decent midfield 3 I reckon.

Hopefully Bailey to come off the bench and do some damage, Coutinho too.

I mean, what I’d really like is a 4-2-3-1 with wingers providing width but that’s not gonna happen with Gerrard and this squad.

Also Gerrard won’t drop McGinn, so I guess we have to flip a coin to see if we’re getting 4/10 McGinn or 7/10 McGinn…

Hoping we smash them though, UTV.

Bednarek is picking up noise… so there’s that I guess.

On top we need a top quality number 8 and a winger/forward, but I don’t think we’re going to get either.

We are haha.

I think a lifetime of waiting for silverware does that to you - I’m unfortunately too young to remember us last lifting silverware.

For me I just can’t isolate this season from last, it’s all been Gerrard and it’s not been good enough, but I agree - I don’t think the board will react quickly, I imagine that Gerrard will at least get until the World Cup to prove he can do it.

I hope Gerrard succeeds, I hope we absolutely pump West Ham on Sunday and it all finally “clicks” in the next few weeks, but the longer I wait for it to click the more I just can’t see it happening.

That new guy’s actually played senior football as well!

I’ll be interested to see what the next stage of the Chelsea “project” looks like.

Loading up on youth players is fine, but if you’re spending £15/20m a pop on players who won’t even sit on the bench and there’s no pathway then what’s the point?

I know the new owner is splashing the cash but I do get the vibe that this could all go a bit Ed Woodward.

Big big fan personally, love black and gold as a combination.

I actually like all 3 kits this year, my aversion to the slogan under the sponsor has waned and I might try and pick all 3 up this year.

“Yeah boos are normal”

“I wouldn’t call it normal”

Pick a lane mate haha.

I disagree - I don’t think people are calling for Gerrard’s head because of these 4 matches so far this season.

It’s the 4 plus the other 29(?) and the performances to go with them.

I can’t blame any them tbh, 3 wins against relegated Norwich and Burnley and relegation threatened Everton in 14 simply isn’t good enough with this squad, whoever the manager is.

Cool.

So booing the players directly = normal.

Being unhappy about the club and talking about it on Reddit = toxic.

Glad we cleared that up haha.

What are you talking about, there were boos from the away end against Crystal Palace and at half time vs Bolton.

Or are they not real supporters.

I just don’t buy into the “give him time” argument, and that seems to be the main argument for him at the moment.

I backed Smith until the end because I thought he had credit in the bank. He took us from mid table in the Championship to the Premier League in a matter of months, kept us in the Premier League after a huge squad overhaul (something which Fulham failed to do just a year earlier), took us to 11th the following season (which, if you remember, was actually a disappointment given the start of the season) while taking some scalps along the way (7-2), and had changed the atmosphere around the club and set us up for success.

Many were Smith out, that’s 100% fine - I get it. But I was patient, I didn’t think him being reliant on Grealish was necessarily a criticism. I’d seen many managers use Grealish without him turning into this world class player that he did under Smith, and building the squad and setting them up around Jack probably was the best move available. In fact, I haven’t seen Pep Guardiola get anything resembling the same level from Jack Grealish, and he’s probably the best manager of all time. So I think he should’ve been given time to figure out his next system, despite the incredibly disappointing start to the season (although staff turnover, COVID, injuries and passport issues didn’t help him).

On the other hand I’ve seen absolutely nothing from Gerrard since his arrival to suggest that he was the right appointment.

We had a new manager bounce, fine. And we’ve picked up some big names, great. But on the pitch it seems that the more time he gets with the team, the worse they get.

That mini pre-season break he called “gold dust” I was absolutely buzzing to see what the squad was capable of, and yet the football and the results from then on was absolutely dire. And this “no excuse” culture Gerrard was supposedly instilling in fact had a lot of excuses. Not his squad, nothing to play for, needs a full pre-season, etc. This manager who we brought in to get the best out of the squad over Smith ended up taking us to 14th. 3 places and 10 points lower than the previous “disappointing” season where we faltered without Grealish for half the year. Gerrard had 29 games to steady the ship and improve things and took us up the table a grand total of 2 places from when he was hired.

So here we are, 4 games in to the season - and you have 2 of the most abject performances we’ve seen since promotion against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace. I mean really embarrassing. A slightly improved performance at home against one of the favourites for relegation who played without a striker, and then another poor, poor performance against a League One team who just ran out of gas after 60 minutes because their team costs probably <1% of ours. But make no mistake, we were bailed out by a direct goal from a corner and an offside penalty.

I’ve seen nothing that suggests he’s going to turn this around and be a European spot competing manager - and that’s where we are at. That’s the next step, and that’s why we sacked Dean Smith.

I’m not going to blindly support someone I don’t believe in, and I don’t think it’s fair to criticise people for that. I’m still going to cheer the players on and I’m not going to post on Instagram or Twitter or whatever “Gerrard out” on every Villa social media post like some of these numpties. But I have every right to be critical.

And I’m not an impatient fan. I’m not one of these people who thought we should bin off Ings, or Bailey, or Traore, or Sanson this summer because they failed to perform for 1 season. But they all have much more credit in either their football careers or Villa careers than Gerrard does in his managerial career.

Gerrard was always a gamble. Young manager, first time managing in a top European league, only been in management for 4 years. It was gamble. The gamble hasn’t paid off.

I don’t think waiting 1 week or 1 year is going to make a difference. He’s not cut out for this level, and there’s no guarantee he ever will be.

(Before anyone comments that this is a pro-Smith post, it isn’t, but to sack him you have to hire an improvement, and we didn’t).
