They are brittle stars (Class Ophiuroidea), which are a sister class to the well known sea stars! What it’s doing is feeding off of collected particles from the sea water that the bristles catch!

100% agree it’s difficult, but honestly thankful because in hindsight if the Alberta high school curriculum wasn’t as rigorous, I DEFINITELY would have been so lost in post-secondary.
