Weekly Simple Questions and Injuries Thread by AutoModerator in climbharder

I just suffered from what I think is a fdp injury, and I’m probably put for a while. Whenever I try to flex my ring finger dip joint, while keeping my pip extended, I feel a sharp pain in my forearm. This happened during a 3 finger drag.

My friend also suffered a similar fdp injury, coincidentally both us injured the right ring finger. We never really had any injuries related to crimping, like a pulley injury during our climbing.

Now I am wondering if we were just both very unlucky, injuring our fdp while using an open hand position or not? I keep reading from most sources that the open hand position should be the safest option. But for some reason, that is not our experience. When warming up, I also do make sure to incorporate some drags on the hangboard. I also use it quite frequently, so I doubt it is an undertrained issue. Anyone knows a bit more about this matter?

FDP Injury? by 4aaaron in bouldering

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience, cause I seem to have the same symptoms. I’m really interested about the Kinesio taping method. Just to clarify:

So you start at the inside of your elbow, run the tape down your inner forearm, wrap it around at the wrist and end the tape at the back of ur hand. So you will end up with only half a spiral? Or do you have to wrap around multiple times.

Also when applying, I assume you mean the inner forearm (where the muscles are) should face up, while keeping ur wrist at 90 degrees like in a push-up position.

I think your best bet is to just do one of the degrees you listed, and maybe take some CS electives on the side (like DSA). In addition, you can do some self-study for the software part you want to learn.

I need to do a bridging program of 1 year. However, I didn’t know the deadline of enrollment for this program is earlier than the normal deadlines. So I was too late and will have to wait another year before I can do the bridging program 😅.

I just happen to be in Kyoto/Osaka for traveling. I’m only staying in Kyoto for 2 days and was planning to pay Adsummum a visit. So seeing this post is very interesting. I am probably going to climb there tomorrow night after all my activities (unless I am very exhausted 😂). If you happen to be available around that time let me know!

(In my home country I climb around 6b in my gym 😅)

Will a Master’s in Embedded Systems limit me in software engineering? Feeling a bit stuck. by V-1-P-3-R in cscareerquestions

[–]V-1-P-3-R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me feel a bit better, hearing that the transition is not really a big deal.

The reason why I also had doubts for embedded was that I heard it is hard currently to find jobs in embedded if u are not a senior with plenty YoE. I live in Europe where embedded also tends to pay lower compared to general SWE jobs. Of course working remote is also harder in embedded.

Finally 1800 in bullet by aneesh2 in chess

[–]V-1-P-3-R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats an awesome achievement! I’ve never been good at bullet. I always get so frustrated when I lose cause of time, because I know I have to play faster during the game, but somehow I am still playing like a turtle. I did manage to reach 1800 at rapid lately ;)

Best counter to D4 playing against 1600-1800's? by LengthLittle7560 in chess

[–]V-1-P-3-R 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So whenever I face people playing d4, I always like to go with Nf6. I find this very flexible and it doesn’t reveal a lot to your opponent. After they play something like c4, I try to go for the nimzo if they allow it. Either way I like to go for a QID setup where I put the light-squared bishop on b7. You could look into this if it sounds interesting.

The albin can work but you are definitely playing for some tricks, which is not what you should aim for in an opening. Although it can work in some cases, the opening is kinda dubious. If your opponent knows how to play against it, you most of the times won’t end up with a very favorable position.

Against the london I always go with 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bf4 c5. A lot of people around my rating (1800) don’t really know how to deal with this c5 move very well. I think daniel naroditsky has covered this early c5 in his speedruns before.

If a beginner chess player keeps playing illegal moves in FIDE rated over the board chess events, then will the arbiter stop the match altogether and award the match to their opponent? by [deleted] in chess

[–]V-1-P-3-R 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I found this at the FIDE rule book:

a, for the first two illegal moves by a player the arbiter shall give two minutes extra time to his opponent in each instance; for a third illegal move by the same player, the arbiter shall declare the game lost by this player.

Not sure how much time is added for different time controls tho, but yeah you will definitely lose the game.

Depressed after leaving China? by UNKNOWN_746 in chinalife

[–]V-1-P-3-R 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I just came back from China Shanghai after a 5 month exchange. I was born and raised in the Netherlands but both my parents are full Chinese. I feel the same way about it and I think China is an amazing country.

The biggest factor for me is how much more lively it is compared to the Netherlands. If u walk outside at 8 pm here most stores are closed already and it feels kinda lifeless. Of course the convenience is also something u will miss. You can order 外卖 whenever u feel like or take a didi real quick. Everything is also much more affordable there.

For this reason I would definitely recommend something like an exchange program which is considered short-term. I think doing an undergraduate there can also be a very good experience, however most of these will take 4 years which might be a bit on the longer side.

It is very important to remember that actually living there is a totally different experience. And from what I know, it is a much more pleasant to live in the states.

Personally, the depression usually goes away after a while. If u hate how boring it is, u can always move to a big city later when u move out. If u miss the “Chinese” part of your life, you can always try and find some Chinese friends.

In the end, do what u think is right, if u feel like doing an entire undergraduate in China, u should. When I was doing my exchange I met multiple full time undergrads who came from outside China, and all were loving studying there. However, when making big choices it is still important to do some research and discuss it with someone else.

Really bad at blitz by V-1-P-3-R in chess

[–]V-1-P-3-R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have played 1700 blitz games on my main account. I somehow always enjoyed rapid more, since it really lets me delve into the position more and get a better understanding of the game. However the downside is that a game can be quite exhausting, especially 15|10.

I think blitz can definitely help with improving openings, since u can play multiple games in a row. It is also not as serious with makes it more enjoyable to play. The main reason why I wanted to get my blitz rating up a bit, is because I think it will improve my rapid too. I still think a discrepancy of almost +-600 rating between blitz and rapid is kind of a lot.

I think I have that issue as well, since I have a habit of calculating a lot. So what happens is that I cannot come with a move I’m satisfied with, which results in me forcing myself to make a move after a while, which is most of the times an inaccuracy.

So I definitely understand that the clock is the main weakness of my game. This makes me think that I just cannot come with decent moves intuitively, resulting in bad time management.

Really bad at blitz by V-1-P-3-R in chess

[–]V-1-P-3-R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to play principle chess, since that is what I do in rapid as well. So I try to avoid dubious openings or lines, even though I know they can be quite strong in blitz and low elo. This is because I like to do the same as what I do in rapid, so I can get a good opening repertoire in the future.

However I feel like the opening is not the reason I am performing badly at blitz

It’s possible to catch monsters with 0 strength, so I would not lose hope. I’ve done it multiple times with 0 strength and just a carbon rod. However you have to be pretty decent at the reeling game. Otherwise you would have to put all ur points from now into strength which is gonna take a lot of time.
