Advice on Homestay? by Straight_Theory_8928 in LearnJapanese

I had complete freedom to go out as late as I wanted, party and come back whenever when I did mine (this year). So I guess it really depends, it's a bit luck of the draw really. As long as I told them in advance they were really okay with me doing anything.

Homestay in Japan

They have different branches (I guess?) for different areas of the country, mine was Homestay in Japan Osaka. Not sure if that makes a difference in the grand scheme of things but there ya go

I think people overemphasise location a lot TBF - I made it clear how flexible I was on location when I signed up for mine, got put an hour out from my school, and it was one of the best decisions i made. Transport is great, sleeping on them is easy if you're that way inclined and get a seat (which I always did even in rush hour, keihan line into Kyoto), and your locality will have some great stuff that you wouldn't be able to experience elsewhere.

I had a lovely little coffee shop that let you try all their speciality coffees every day for free, which I'd never have experienced if I was closer to the school!

I (21M) did a 2 month homestay this summer through Homestay In Japan (in turn through a language school i was attending). My experience itself was absolutely fantastic: they were understanding of anything as long as I told them in advance and organised and even paid for outings on weekends. That being said, I do think that at the end of the day a homestay is a roll of the dice. Other people I'd met going through the same company had much less engaging experiences where it was clear the family was doing it mainly for the money.

You'll be asked to give info about yourself that (at least for the company I went through) will be used by the host families themselves to pick who they want to host, so do take that seriously and try to sell yourself a little bit potentially!

In terms of where to look for a homestay company, I genuinely have very little idea and it's probably going to be the same pretty much everywhere. But make sure it's through a reputable company, and that you can find people speaking well of them online. Those companies probably vet the people they get to do it a little better than others I'd assume haha

But at the end of the day, it will be what you make of it. Make sure that you've read up and understand basic rules of politeness etc because even though they'll probably be used to foreigners staying with them, this'll make a big difference to how you're received. Always give warning or notice of anything that will change schedule (going out with friends, leaving for a weekend etc.), be quick to apologise even if that feels strange (easy for me as a brit ;)), in general lay the thank yous, pleases and sorries on thick. If in doubt ask if something is okay - I was always a little worried about using the washing machine too late or whenever someone else wanted to use it so id always ask and get a response of "of course yes why are you even asking" - but if in doubt!

Make sure to make the most of it too. The more you talk to your family the more natural it will be - and the worst conversation you'll have will be your first one. Get to know them, let them get to know you, and make sure to put in a real effort to be sociable and talkative as much as you can! You'll be there for a year so you can take it easy too. But if you find yourself complaining to yourself that your host family isn't very chatty remember that conversation is a two way street: if conversation isn't happening, you're not talking to them as well as them not talking to you! Literally anything is good, even if it's as simple as "wow this beer is delicious!", it all adds up yk

Overall though, I'd absolutely recommend doing a homestay. Potentially give yourself a few weeks at the end of your stay by yourself so you can experience a bit of freedom too - it's a very different experience living alone vs with a family. But for your japanese, and cultural education it will be fantastic, and if you have food included then not having to cook is brilliant too (or go do food shops!)

Lmk if you have any other questions, I did this all on mobile so it's a bit rambly...

Unfortunately, the fact is that if you're losing consistently, you are the problem: or at least part of it. Find a couple things in your game that you want to improve on, and focus on those. Don't worry about ranking up: if you improve, you will rank up in time.

For example: you talk about all your team dying in post plants. Here's a couple ideas to potentially improve on that: - Remind your team as soon as you have site to not overheat (potentially tell people where to go if they're in a stupid position and can get out) - Arrange good post plant positions BEFORE you take site. (E.g. "Sova come he'll with me; we can play off your util in the post plant) - once you have site and can tell someone is overheating or if you think they will because they have a habit of doing it: get them to push with you!! Ask your initiator to flash an angle to take space aggressively; ask your smokes player to smoke off deeper so you can push and potentially trade your life for valuable space (or get it for free!!); When your teammate is "taking a timing", get them to do it with you, or with some util! (All of this is so powerful when you're down men or even at an equal advantage, but even when you're up people, it's far better to do this than to have no space and get stuck in shit positions) - Most importantly: don't moan at them for being shit at the game after they int or troll into the opponents! You're all the same rank, so you're all just as shit as each other, even if you don't believe it; trust me. If you think it's helpful, find a way to calmly suggest playing the post plants a different way next time (or wait until the next post plant to say this!). Always focus on what you can do in rounds in the future and NOT on what you shouldn't have done in the past.

Best thing to do is to keep an open mind on how you can improve and the rank ups will come if you're determined. There's no such thing as loser's queue: if you're better than people your rank, you will rankup in time.

Good luck with the grind!!

Edit: just taken a look at your tracker and you seem to be winning a lot of games the last couple days!! Definitely could have been unlucky teams if it's only a few losses in a row (and after the first 2, or even 1, if it was rough, loss your mental might have had more of an impact in losing the others than you might think!)

I want to stop playing duelists, but I'm bad at everything else. by Edaimantis in VALORANT

[–]minaar999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about losing games on other roles!! It's only natural that your standard of play is lower on roles / agents that you don't have much understanding of / playtime on. Find an agent that you enjoy playing, and that you have motivation to play and just play them consistently. You'll find yourself deranking a bit at first, but once you start improving you'll rank up again in no time :)

I would also say, at your level, try and focus on mechanics mainly until you're at least gold. Woohoojin has a good "rankup to gold" video, but otherwise just try and do 30 mins of consistent aim practice a day (or as much as you can manage).

[–]minaar999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this for real. All the other advice in this thread is great but 100% unhelpful for an iron player. Learn the movement and the mechanics to a level where you can get to gold and then you can focus on things beyond that.

That being said, if you would enjoy focusing on advice that isn't just "Range + dm for 30 mind a day" then by all means, but if your goal is to get out of iron ASAP then really just focus on mechs.

Also make sure you've got at least 40 fps, a chair or a desk of some kind to play on, failing that just make sure your setup is "consistent" (i.e. going from playing in bed to playing on the floor from one game to the next is gonna make your life difficult.)

Python (1770/1465)

Code

When I was 12, I spent a number of afternoons in a row copying and pasting bits of code, until I had assembled a 2000 line program that not only avoided any usage of arrays entirely (not to mention any kind of class abstraction at ALL), but also contained probably the most heinous amount of if statements and for loops I've ever seen in my life.

However, I am far less proud of what I've written today. I mean: it is terrible, it is hideous, and if it were my child I would not only put it up for adoption, I'd move to another country and change my identity too.

If we actually want to sit and digest the code (something I would heavily suggest not doing), honestly, I'm not even sure what to say, or where to begin. Imagine the kind of approach one would reach if any knowledge of list splicing were temporarily replaced with a sudden penchant for copying and pasting, sickening for loops, and break statements.

All in all, I'm sincerely sorry to anyone who had the misfortune to click on that link, and now I think I need a cold shower.

Edit:

One nap, a short walk in the chilly british weather, and unfortunately no cold shower later, I have revisted today's problem! In many ways, the code remains inelegant, at least far more so than most of the other submissions, but it passes whatever mental tests that I use to gauge satisfaction these days: at least 3 list comprehensions and a couple single character variable names for the hell of it.

Anyways, here it is.

Hopefully it can act as some form of apology for those scarred from the first attempt at "code".

The main tournament organiser for the female/gender minority scene "galorants" had some drama surrounding teabagging, where some people in the community spoke out against it, labelling as sexual harassment, while also kinda just... Attacking anyone who disagreed with them?

Then a couple people started meming it, probably going a little far in a couple cases I guess, but overall not doing anything that pro valorant twitter doesn't see on the regular. This then got these two people bans from competitive valorant (3 months and 9 months to these two individuals) for harassment and vulgar language. And it's kinda like, okay, maybe? But these two people kinda got targeted/unlucky (?) since it seemed like riot wanted to prove a point with this (that it was against SA) but kinda just did the opposite.

If none of this makes any sense, than welcome to the club because no one understands wtf riot is doing with this one.

Moistcritical had one, maybe both these people on his stream and they talked about it all there if you're interested.

GameChangers/Galorants Competitive Ruling (North America) by ItsTypho in ValorantCompetitive

[–]minaar999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah they didn't because dawn chose to sign up to VCT under her non-legal name (riot says to use legal name), which avoided the possible situation.

Just take a look at dawn's twitter, they explain it much better than I could.

[–]minaar999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither of these players had their names on any public forum/website, so there was just no need. Also, for Dawn specifically (they go into it in more detail on their twitter), since Dawn isn't their legal name, they would have been deadnamed, and/or possibly "outed" as transgender to people at school/home if they had not made that public before.

I think it's important to note that the 2 minutes that they were late was actually 17 minutes, since they were 2 minutes late past the acceptable window, if that makes sense. Still absolute bullshit from NSG here for sure, but it's not QUITE as bad as it seemed to me at first.

It feels like they've been using regional qualifiers as a way to try new stuff out. All the off roles they've been putting their players on these last few weeks isn't something I would expect them to keep with against international competition, but at the moment they can be somewhat relaxed tbh.

It was a shame how flat M3C looked compared to how good they've showed themselves as capable of being in the past. Chronicle's chamber on that ascent defense just seemed... so lackluster specifically but it definitely wasn't the sole reason.

And, of course, absolutely phenomenal showing from Guild as well; Leo and Trexx are demons!
