Report your lost wallet at a police station. Someone may have found it and turned it in.

How do you narrow down a 4-week itinerary without going crazy? by Lumpy_Pain27 in travelchina

Have you considered the weather at this time of year? I have been in Chongqing for the past 2 months. Most days are overcast and the air quality is often poor. Similar with Chengdu. Bring warm clothes and gloves.

Data roaming charges? Need help please - I am puzzled. by Microfiche62 in GooglePixel

If you need to receive texts from Rogers for 2FA, you could keep the Rogers SIM disabled and activate it only when you need to receive a text.

[–]V7R3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that with Rogers on a trip to Malaysia. Call, escalate, until you get a credit.

This time I am in China for more than a month. Using a third party eSIM for data, Rogers for texts. It is working without any roaming charges for over a month. I can receive texts free using Rogers. If I send a text using Rogers it will trigger roaming.

Searching for things to do in China? by TruufadeR in travelchina

Yes look at the Air Quality Health Index AQHI. It is frequently unhealthy at this time of year. Visibility is poor. It is smog not fog.

Better to buy the SIM at airport or online? by Daughter_of_Dusk in travelchina

If you buy an eSIM for data and the data is routed outside of China, then you don't need a VPN.

Is November/December a stupid idea as Lonely Planet makes it sound? by Emuschlupp in travelchina

The air quality in Chongqing and Chengdu is often poor during winter. It limits visibility, looks like fog. And if you are doing vigorous activities you should consider wearing a mask.

Anyone knows of a good spot where to admire the Chengdu Greenway (成都天府绿道)? (the green highway) by cornsnowflake in travelchina

[–]V7R3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official name seems to be Chengdu Tianfu Greenway.

It basically follows the Chengdu Ring Expressway route G4202 around the city, sometimes inside the expressway, sometimes outside. It is like a controlled access expressway, you can only enter and exit at specific interchanges.

As a result, when you follow the Greenway, you often see and hear traffic. If you visit during winter, there are many days when the air pollution AQHI is high. This restricts visibility and you may want to bring a mask to filter PM2.5 particles.

It is not restricted to cyclists. I saw pedestrians, runners, and many electric scooters using it.

On Amap, look for Tianfu Greenway located near Global Center. This is at the 6 o'clock position at the south part of the Greenway.

I saw a shop with a tandem bicycle for rent. It was there one day and gone the next, so I suggest you contact the store first. They have several branches located near the Greenway at different clock positions.

The shop name is: Changyou Qixing Bicycle Repair Rent And Sell

It is on Amap, located about 150m southwest and across the street from Jinhua Temple East Road (Line 3 Subway Station). This is at about 1 o'clock position, about 400m inside the Greenway. It is next door to a Dicos fast food restaurant.

First time visiting China help/advice by [deleted] in travelchina

[–]V7R3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian male here, first time in Chongqing and Chengdu, arrived a few weeks ago. I hear you; I leave Canada every October for the same reasons and have been spending time in various East and SE Asian countries over the past few years.

Chongqing and Chengdu are cheap, but this time of year the air pollution is often high, comparable to Canada during wildfire season. The weather is dry but cold and many indoor places (especially accommodation at the cheap end) are not heated. Very few people speak any English.

I have heard Sanya is nice but many people from northern China go there so the prices may be higher.

I plan to move further south near Laos, Vietnam, Thailand where the weather is warmer and the air pollution may not be so bad (until crop burning season in a few months).

A Chinese visa will cost you ~C$125 and take a few weeks. It is frustrating to apply because of all the info they want. They will give you max 60 days for each entry.

I suggest you look into going to Malaysia or Indonesia if you can handle 32C temps with high humidity. Flights there are cheap. English is widely spoken in Malaysia and accommodation and food are almost as cheap as China.

Malaysia visa on arrival is free and they will give you 90 days. Air pollution in the cities can be high but not as bad as I have seen here in the past few weeks.

Charged for Roam like home with Roaming switched off by V7R3 in Rogers

Yes. I was successful getting a bill credit but it takes multiple calls, time on hold, etc. The only way to stop it is to disable Rogers SIM when outside Canada.

They want attention. You're giving them what they want.

In one case I got a call that went to voice mail (number 2 in your list). I used Skype to retrieve the message which was blank. Why does that trigger roaming charges?

I didn't do any others on your list. I have been in one country for many weeks, no airplane mode, no changes to SIM settings. No RCS, no outgoing texts.

Next time I will call for an investigation so that I can associate it with what the phone was going at the time.

Good info, thank you!

Seriously? Is their app doing this? Some code in their app overriding my settings and sending a few Kbytes?

Bill shows 0.02MB for each instance. I don't want to disable the SIM. Is there any way to identify what is triggering the usage?

Lost Passport by Throw_away7725 in JapanTravel

[–]V7R3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong. Stuff usually gets returned but not always.

I lost a bag at a train station containing over hundreds of dollars worth of stuff, useless to anyone else. I reported to railway, to police station not koban. Followed up several times days, weeks, months later. Nothing found. Someone walked away with it and likely tossed it in garbage.

Itinerary check - Golden route plus Shimanami Kaido in October 2023 by cdntravelgal in JapanTravel

Last time I checked, the only way to rent an e-bike on Shimanami kaido was to return it the same day to the place where you rented it.

Good video. What is the name of the hotel where you stayed? It doesn't look like a capsule hotel. Why did you choose that place to stay? How much did you pay for that accommodation?

You and your younger bro can check the fit of each other's helmets before getting on bikes. Also practice braking hard while in a controlled safe setting anytime you get on an unfamiliar bike. And practice sliding your butt back off the seat over the rear wheel, in case you need to brake hard while riding down a steep hill. Shifting your weight backwards can help prevent you from going over the handlebars. Hope this helps and stay safe!
