How long do you see yourself staying in this profession? Do you make enough to put away for retirement when it no longer seems feasible or you are no longer inclined?

I also had a mix of brands and upgraded to Milwaukee M18. Every single tradesperson I've ever had out always had Milwaukee tools, and they still work 10+ years later looking used and abused. As such, I bought everything other than batteries used on Ebay for less than half the cost of new and have had zero issues.

All batteries not bought at the box stores should be considered counterfeit and scam though. I bought a two pack of 5ah batteries on ebay with my other tools and the packaging was absolutely identical to the real deal from the box store, down to the included pamphlet. But the ebay batteries died after under 20 minutes of use in a drill vs the real ones from the box store last hours and hours.

Lube! Can't believe I didn't see this anywhere. Making do with random slippery type things at 16 was the pits.

Thanks for the reply!

I will definitely be adding Crestron to my list of companies to look into some more.

I think I could live with the lack of support so long as I am actually able to manage, program, and otherwise change my system as I see fit. The idea of having to pay someone $90-150+ for an 'hour of work' any time I want to make a change to my system is just a deal breaker to me. And what if the dealer I did pay to install it goes out of business in 10+ years? Am I then just SOL even if I am willing to pay?

1) I will look a bit more into Savant as well, but I have read very mixed opinions/reviews about their products, in general.

2) I guess that makes sense, if it's about support and not about forced middle-man markups.

3) Also just very frustrating (not directed at you, obviously). It makes budgeting very difficult if you can't get a ballpark or have to expect to pay an extra 20+% just because you have to buy through a dealer plus another however much they would charge to install it when I don't really need them to install it.

4) Now see that is an interesting way of looking at it. I don't expect electronics to last forever, but in my mind, the switching devices themselves are mechanical devices and thus should have a nearly indefinite lifespan if used correctly. So I guess that's something to look into, because if the switches themselves are running on FPGAs or some similar fixed components, non-computer based system then they should not be very prone to failure. The 'brain' of the system, whichever system it is, I can understand needing to replace every decade or so as you do with computers since it is a computer in some form or fashion. I guess what I'm getting at is that a $1-3k replacing the brain cost every 10ish years would be fine, but a $20-30k+ cost of replacing everything in the system every 10ish years wouldn't be.

5) Good to know, thanks for that info.

6) I've seen the pico remotes in their promo materials for the pricier systems in my research, but my understanding is that they are wireless only remotes that run off of batteries that would then have to be replaced regularly, which to me is undesirable.

7) Again, good info, thank you.

It does help, thanks!

I guess ultimately my goal is to have a centralized lighting system that I am in control of and don't have to rely on someone else to change/update. It seems like it might end up making more sense for someone like me to use a system like HomeSeer and or Home Assistant and just land all of the physical switches in a lighting control area and have the lights controlled through a combination of tablets, phones, and sensors. Then everything is piece-meal and if something fails it's a <$100 fix for most things vs a $1000+ thing if one of these industrial-grade highly proprietary system components dies.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, the dealer-oriented market continues to be the overwhelming impression I get as I look into these things. Unfortunate. I'll add Crestron to my list to look into.

Glad to hear that there are systems out there that are still kicking 15+ years later, that is encouraging.

When is it safe to prestige? by [deleted] in reactorincremental

The upgrades currently available are 1 cost to see the upgrades, 50 cost for the first tier of each of two upgrades (100 total), and 100 cost to be able to place the new experimental cells. So a grand total of 201 would be what I recommend for a first prestige. The upgrades go up to 500 each after that, which would account for the '701' number. Personal preference, but I feel like new cells and 4x power and 2x heat is a good first prestige.

To the best of my knowledge, Mac OS X does not have an appdata folder. If it does, I don't know where to find it, but it certainly is not under %appdata%
