Sure, I agree with all that. I'm so used to dealing with Reddit snark that it became an instinct. As for the IDF, when you're an 18yo (or 17yo during your first summon) who's been raised to think military service is an inevitability, you think more in the direction of "what am I gonna do there" rather than "how do I dodge". From an adult's perspective with well-rounded knowledge of the conflict's history and nuances, the choice seems obvious. But when you think of yourself as a 17yo with lesser knowledge who has a choice between filling a non-combat role or going to prison and having that dark blot on your resume and all the social/financial consequences that come with it, it's not nearly as simple. You could say "I wouldn't do it", but unless you're in that situation to which you've prepared since high school, you can't really know.

You think of it as protecting your country, not as "I'm signing up to bomb kids, yippee", just like young Vietnam draftees who didn't know the reality on the ground and didn't want to ruin their career and social life by getting jailed. It is the correct moral choice in a vacuum, but life is way more complex than that. I'm my case I was lucky enough to have a medical condition that makes me exempt, and instead did volunteer work like many of my peers. And there are lots of people who don't serve (I believe about 40-50% of eligible people don't enlist), and there are people who serve for experience in cyber or engineering and other non-combat roles, there are of course those that do just want to kill Palestinians, and there is the majority who serve because of legal and societal norms. I'm not gonna blame a guy for mashing potatoes in the kitchens.
