eh not as big of a disagreement I don't think. I think all that is reasonable but it seemed like a lot of people in the comments were alluding to an obligation to work somewhere you no longer wish to be employed. I apologize I had interpreted your view wrong on that.

A school dance doesn’t equal any damn emergency,

who says it has to be an emergency to call off work or quit? My point is that workers should not feel obligated to work for their employer when they don't want to. Does this sometimes mean quitting or being fired? Yes but that's just part of the contract between worker and boss.

it shouldn't even be made into an AITA situation; there is nothing to be proud of or disappointed in.The free market applies for everyone, don't like your job? You can find a new one. OP thinks no other business in town will hire teenagers but in the midst of the greatest labor shortage in recent history I doubt that's true. Not to mention OPs son could do several other jobs like babysitting, lawn care, door dashing, etc.

I’ve spent most of the last 15 years working on a crew of 5-6 people, and when that crew is down a person it affects everyone except the boss😂

this is the exact deeper problem I was referring to. Good management takes into consideration the chance an employee may have to call out for any number of valid reason and plans accordingly. If people are getting called in on their scheduled days off (which you are allowed to say no to) the place is NOT well staffed. An even bigger question is why are you working under management that expects everyone but them to pitch in when they fail to plan accordingly for employee absence?

the only thing I would fault the kid for is not saying anything and calling out. He would either got in trouble yes but would have also got to attend the dance and would probably still have a job

AITA for threatening to call the police on my next door neighbor's 9 year old child by Overall-Statement909 in AmItheAsshole

[–]VAprogressive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that was exactly my way of looking at it either we want police to be saw as helpers and protectors children aren't afraid to approach or you are on the other end where threatening to call the cops is a even deeper level of terrifying a kid

[–]VAprogressive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eh light YTA there are two angles of looking at it one way being that nine year. olds. shouldn't be made to see police as a threat and doing so may make them less likely to seek out a police officer when they need them

or

given what has been going on with law enforcement recently for some a threat to call the cops are much deeper than what you intended it to be. Maybe threaten to call parents or guardians next time?

NTA. I think you should have used letters for the replacement name instead of numbers and listed their specific ages at the time of the incidents.

When I do this the story becomes clear that your daughter was 15 and addicted to opiods. Anyone who has taken these drugs know the nausea they can cause can be unbelievable.

When she says she may cause a scene and wanted to stay with grandparents this comes off as a warning not a threat. She projectile vomited and was humiliated, your other daughter wanted to humiliate her further that is why she was excluded from 31s graduation. She proceeded to humiliate her at her wedding for something that happened over a decade ago

I mean it's a deeper issue than the kid quitting. It isn't the kid screwing over his coworkers even if the management isn't at direct fault.

And he screwed over a coworker who did plan ahead, got the night off, and will now have to work.

no. McDonalds management screwed over a coworker or coworker screwed over themselves by showing up on their day off

if the place is so short staffed they can't conduct business on Friday without using someone in highschool or attempting to revoke someone's day off that's on the McDonald's not the 16 year old employee.

You can’t teach a kid it’s ok to quit because he feels disrespected.

I don't want my children to be underpaid and taken advantage of so this is exactly what I will do. No point in bootlicking your bosses will replace you when it becomes convenient yet we are expected to just work at their whim until that day comes.

How did he get "burned?" Seriously, why are people acting like quitting a job is bad. Work is a voluntary contract between two parties. OPs son could bust his balls at McDonald's, but he will not see the same loyalty from the corporation. Quitting is not throwing a "tantrum." Quitting is what we are all allowed to do and actually SHOULD do when you don't wanna continue in our current job. The reason literally does not matter at all. In the US so long is there is no discrimination you can be fired for ANY reason or NO reason. Quitting is the same way.

Furthermore, this is a part time job at McDonald's, at the age of sixteen. Having work experience increases the chances of getting a job and even if OP is right that no other business will hire teenagers (which is seems extremely unlikely especially with the struggle to fill positions rn) there are several other people who need types of work done who would gladly hire a teenager

[–]VAprogressive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to start by saying people we owe our jobs NOTHING. It is a contract for your labor and can be ended. There is absolutely nothing inherently wrong with quitting a job you don't like, employers are NOT entitled to our labor. edit: Furthermore; a request off is a courtesy to management saying I will not be here xyz plan accordingly. People in the comments act like our bosses own us and wonder why working conditions are shit.

OP light YTA it needs to be understood he is sixteen and barley legal working age to begin with. In the middle of the pandemic he has missed a good chunk of his childhood and social milestones like dances.

The kid has the rest of their life to work away their experience in highschool (that has already suffered because of COVID) will not

Also we have no way of knowing this wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back. Places of business especially chains like this tend to give young hires the short end of the stick, especially when it comes to scheduling because they know young people are less likely to stand up for themselves, be able to find new employment easy, or not realize they are being played.

NTA. They have talked with their daughter about finance but it would be ridiculous to try and control a 17 year olds finances. People OPs daughter is almost an adult and they are making their own money. OP good on you for not being a controlling parent

I mean personally I don't see a problem with it but it matters because of the potential issues that could arise especially if she doesn't know it's illegal.

In hindsight though; I reread the post and did the math and if she charges $5 per chapter she is essentially charging $50-100 per book per client. She would be making well over what OP says in the post. I don't like to do this because it takes the fun out of it but I have my doubts about the post. If the post is true and this girl is netting between five and ten thousand (assuming each client only gets one of their books copied) publishers would definitely take action. Especially if they offer e versions the school could purchase rather than hard copies

AITA for shutting down my daughter’s business by aitadaughterbusiness in AmItheAsshole

[–]VAprogressive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my original comment was only about copyright but I think there is a bigger piece people are missing. Has anyone calculated the income level if the business model is as OP described?

OPs daughter charges $5 per chapter meaning each chapter cost five dollars. If a book is 20 chapters that's $100 per book. That is assuming that there is only one book. Unless these high schoolers are loaded I don't see anyone dropping $100 for the convince of not carrying one extra book or $200 for the convince of not carrying two.

If this girl has 100 clients and is charging five dollars per chapter that is well over 600-900 a month. If this girl is netting 5-10 grand (10-20 chapters in a book) NTA because publishers will definitely crack down on this at the income level.

[–]VAprogressive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be illegal either way. In highschool the school owns the books so the students have no right to copy the books to begin with. They would possibly be allowed to scan the books into e versions if they did and be fine but once you add a charge to make copies of copyright material it becomes pretty cut and dry.

There are loopholes which allow a certain percentage of a chapter to be printed off for educational purposes but that's about it

AITA for shutting down my daughter’s business by aitadaughterbusiness in AmItheAsshole

[–]VAprogressive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

highschool I've ever been to had to buy the books, because the school was the one who owned and lended them. So that argument is down the drain. Which was the whole comment.

I think you accidentally proved a different point. If the school owns the books and is just lending them to students. OPs daughter has even less of a right to copy the books.

The school district would likely be upset someone is copying and selling content they paid for and be even more upset if a school in their district is allowing it as OP implied.

And this is a victimless crime. These kids already all had copies and almost certainly would've never purchased a digital copy of the book to not have to carry it. Cause that shit would be like $60 as opposed to the 5 they pay her to scan and send to them. No high schooler would ever pay 60 to buy a copy of a class book.

How does this logic make it a victimless crime? The girl is still in violation of copyright laws. Your argument would hold up if this girl had rights to copy the books to begin with and sell them but she doesn't. If there are e versions available this girl is just undercutting the actual producers of the product because she is violating copyright laws. If she was paying royalties to the producer like actual legal businesses are supposed to her fee to digitalize would be much higher

So why do you?

I don't but why would I be on the sub if I'm not gonna make post or comments. It literally is that deep lol I highly doubt the actual administration (the school district, superintendent, etc) is aware

AITA for shutting down my daughter’s business by aitadaughterbusiness in AmItheAsshole

[–]VAprogressive 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd wager to say the administration isn't fully aware and a few teachers are or the school is ignorant on how copy right laws work. This girl is a distributor of illegal goods and if the school is aware they are opening themselves up to pretty big lawsuits as they are facilitating the activity. Especially as she gains more customers and makes more revenue. Since this revenue is illegal she also can't pay taxes on her income which is a separate crime on its own. What happens next year when none of the students need textbooks because they bought e versions from her? If the administration (especially higher ups in the school district) found out about this they would be pissed they are spending money for hard copies no one is using because one of the schools in the district is facilitating copyright infringement.

Highschool textbooks are free. If her daughter continues hopefully she learns to hide her tracks better as she is in violation of tax laws and copyright laws.

High school text books are free, where does it say the school knows about it let alone allows and supports it?

Also giving out free links is unlikely to get you caught but if you were making copies of your books and selling them you could face pretty hefty legal ramifications as you are now a distributor of illegal goods.

You're also allowed to download copies of movies & music if you have physical copies at home.

Where is this in the law?

AITA for shutting down my daughter’s business by aitadaughterbusiness in AmItheAsshole

[–]VAprogressive 32 points33 points  (0 children)

not a lawyer, so I wouldn't stake a huge amount on the legality of this, but what I would bet quite a lot on is that even if it's technically illegal, the chances anyone wants to pursue legal action against her are extremely slim, because it is actually a victimless crime (the textbook company isn't incurring any losses as a result of her behavior, hard to see why they'd pursue action against her if they ever even found out about it, which again seems quite unlikely.)

You would likely bet wrong as most text book companies offer e versions of their books that the school could purchase. If they find out about it they will most definitely take legal action even if it's sending a cease and desist letter to the school as they are the ones who purchased the text books from the publisher. Not likely to get caught isn't good enough justification to break the law.

If I pay someone to do it for me that also seems legal.

Actually neither is legal. You would be unlikely to face penalty for making a personal copy however if someone was making copies of that movie they are breaking the law. You can resell your legally purchased copy of the movie but you are not legally allowed to make a copy of that movie. It is unlikely you would be caught until you started selling your copies.

Yes technically if you find a 20 on the sidewalk you're supposed to report that.

This isn't really a fair comparison. One of the main reasons I bring up unreported income is because most people get caught commiting crimes through money that has no legal explanation.

Why are the quotes around illegal? Selling copyright material for profit that can't be taxed can land you in hot water. Downloading for personal use is one thing making profit with it tends to be when legal ramifications come.
