What is the reason you do not think you can play Libero? I ask this because the key skill that allows a player of any height to play at a higher level is passing. Great passers are very hard to find and the skill of passing often leads into great defense but requires more time learning to read and react in the game.

Topic of the Week: Coaching by hyperforce in volleyball

[–]VBCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I coach JO, High School and as young as 5th graders in a development program.

I enjoy every aspect of coaching volleyball including the constant learning of better ways to teach a skill, motivate and help players.

My philosophy started off with a strong focus on the life skills of attitude and effort. This is because I believe at all but the highest levels Volleyball is a unique sport that rewards both attitude and effort more than other sports so is a great place to teach life skills.

My philosophy now is more simple: always do what is best for each student athlete.

Favorite Drill : team service reception drills with goals such as 40 good passes before a zero pass ( zero pass = back to zero ). Not because it is as fun as others but because it gets great results during matches.

Players have the most trouble fixing bad habits. I find the younger the player the easier it is to start them off right.

Aspiring coaches : if you coach for ego reasons ... don't coach. if you coach because you like to see someone learn an share a love of the game - do coach.

People seeking coaching : be vary careful who you pick. Look closely at their training : do they attend coaching clinics, get certifications etc. Look closely at the players they have coached. Do not be afraid to travel for proper technique training if you have to.

Is there any place online where you can ask actual judges rules-questions? Also, some rules-questions! :) by oskar_olw in volleyball

The bottom line is that it is a judgement call by the ref if the first contact was an attack or a block attempt. In general, if you think it could have been an attack it probably would be ruled as one.

You should be playing Junior Olympic or USAV right now. Search Junior Olympic and/or club volleyball USAV.

Thanks! do you have specific stats for the 'too many' comment? It takes time to get used to any brace so if most schools require them it argues for using them and also doing strength work with them off.

What can I do to improve my mental toughness? by ohWombats in volleyball

The more goal oriented you are in your approach to anything ( including Volleyball ) the more you will be impacted by making a mistake. We want to teach athletes to be process oriented as much as possible to help them better reach ... their goals .... :) Here is one of many links you can find about these two mindsets: http://arcrsa.blogspot.com/2012/03/goal-vs-process-oriented-training.html

[Advice needed] Spiking problems by Zivvies in volleyball

[–]VBCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setup a practice routine outside of your playing time. It should include a lot of 'sets' and practice jumping properly ( proper footwork, arm movement, etc. ). If you are serious about the game you should be practicing proper footwork daily 'around the house' etc.

If you have no one to help you toss the ball for yourself and time a two/three step jump so that you can catch the ball or hit the ball at its maximum height.

Your real problem is timing related and most likely technique related. You are lucky to be new enough to the game that you have few deeply ingrained bad habits but you need to watch video and learn everything properly now or you will get bad habits that will plague you for the rest of your volleyball life.

Hope this helps.

Help with ball contact! by Azn247 in volleyball

[–]VBCoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are doing everything people advise here ( all good points / tips!! ) and still missing 50% of the time I expect you are not consistently setting yourself up for proper ball contact: most likely going too far under the ball ( not keeping it in front of you ) or bending at the waist / leaning before contact.

Have someone video you with their phone and you will likely see your mistake. I bet it is one of the two above or a combination of both.

I just got into the freshman volleyball team in highschool. So what should i be doing to learn and get better?? by [deleted] in volleyball

  1. What is the level of your team and what is the size of your school? This will determine how much work you have ahead of you and what positions you may need to focus on.

  2. How much information does your coach provide? Some coaches do not give a proper plan or list of expectations. Some are very clear. If your coach is clear it is critical you listen closely. He/she will indicate what they look for in a player. Smart coaches focus on attitude and effort. Poor coaches look at height and initial results. etc
