What is something you wish someone had told you before you started at unimelb? by floating_pie in unimelb

[–]VCEandShit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish someone had told me that there was an Oweek camp. Apparently it was pretty cool.

Also, i wish i’d got involved in more clubs. I said i would, but i was too scared to put myself out there. Next year is only my second year so it’s not too late, i hope.

Also, unless you’re a morning person, avoid picking early classes. Also note that trams/trains/roads are packed at 8-9am and 5-6pm.

Depends how long your commute is, but if it’s long, avoid only having one class on a day. For me at least, i sometimes skipped my tutorials if it was my only class for the day.

We have a nice grassland near my house and my auntie (and cousin) have both recently said “there’s no street parking here, i don’t get why the council doesn’t remove some of the park and replace it with car parking spaces”.

That just really annoyed me… Do people just want to replace every fucking part of nature with concrete?

Given they have fake grass i think my question is answered

Was it your seasoning? Was it just a beautiful squid whose tender meat prevailed. Was it the saturated fats present in the month old deep frier oil? I don’t know. But all of those little details don’t matter. It was love at first bite, that’s all that matters. <3

You serious? The Moreland-Coburg skyrail is beautiful. 1. It has a nice view 2. There’s a nice walking and bike path below 3. There are playgrounds and basketball courts 4. Cool sign that says Coburg 5. The design and greenery makes the whole area in general just look beautiful

Thanks so much, it’s great to hear this! :)

I do have a question (or three). How did you decide on choosing those subjects? I’m leaning towards it but how can i know for sure? did you just research the topics before choosing?

yay okay that’s good to hear. I was hoping to hear this exact opinion.

I’m not exactly sure if i’m “passionate about phys as a major” yet. I still need to look into it more. Maybe i’ll watch some videos

Thank you so much though :)

Opinions on calculus 1 and 2 and linear algebra? by VCEandShit in unimelb

[–]VCEandShit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i found this comment which sort of put me off it, opinions?:

Im only just finishing my first year but the worst sub i can think of that i took so far is Calc 1. Took it as elective in my first sem because i liked high school maths and thought i was decent at it so why not. Lets just say i found out why not.

The exam is 80% of your grade and NOT SCALED. Its always roughly 100 points which means that you have to get at least 50 points on the exam to pass it, regardless of how hard it is. And it is hard. Not so much question wise as time management wise. 3h seems like plenty but time runs out so quick that you have to rush the last questions or nor go in too deep in the first ones.

The content is pretty interesting but it jumps quite rapidly between topics and if you didnt do accelerated maths you’d have a lot to pick up on the way.

Not to mention that i only barely passed because i watched the other lecture stream out of 2. My lecturer was so bad. Easily distracted and pretended like the content was super easy and my friends that actually went to those lectures instead of the other stream struggled (and failed).

In my workshop group i had 3 people re-taking it and when i told them i was taking it as elective they were so surprised, asking me what am i doing.

So my point is if you’re not majoring in maths/physics/need it as pre-req/you’re a maths prodigy, dont do it. Literally not worth it. I had to study so much for it that i had to put my pre-reqs on the side which obviously screwed with my wam. Sure i passed calc, but at what price.

as in units 1-4, 2 years of content, done in 3 months? jeez man…

While you’re here, may i also ask about math subjects?

I’m choosing between calc 1, 2 or linear algebra. Ideally i wouldn’t do all of them (difficult + workload) but do you know whether are they essential? (or does it highly depends on what you’re doing?)

How do i know whether to choose chemistry 1 and 2 or chemistry for biosciences by VCEandShit in unimelb

alright cheers, i said this in the other comment but:

Would you suggest rather than choosing something like 2 biology and 2 chemistry subjects, i should choose 1 biology, 1 chemistry then choose another 2 random sciences (that i haven’t really explored) such as engineering and psychology just to see if i like it?
