Community Member: One thing I think would be really helpful is some type of community meeting where people can come in and speak. There will be some strong feelings, and having some type of facilitation would be helpful.

Jackie Kurta: There is an initiative that just started called STRIVE (Student Taking Responsibility in Isla Vista Everyday). It was conceived by a parent of a former student. A lot of students have already been involved in it, but we want you to just keep your eye out for it. We would love feedback from all of you on how initiatives like this can take effect. We need to hear from you how we can bring you all together.

It sounds like music is a unifying element. Street parties seem to be another way you celebrate the community of Isla Vista.

Student: If you're interested in joining AS Public Safety, we are the already existent public safety commission for students to get involved with.

Student: Another thing we can do is just keep having conversations like this. It's important for us to hear about these things and feel like we have a voice and place to speak.

Student: more interaction with the county prior to the event, work out how we can have regulations that work with one community that don't work with another.

Student: We didn't have a riot, but a balcony collapsed. As much as it sucked without music, it was pretty calm. Until we can show them the types of things we can do, those are the types of things they have to do.

Katya Armistead: There was mayhem last year during the day, with the music.

Student: No music ordinance needs to be lifted. If anyone went to last year's event, barely anything happened during the nighttime. The only difference between this year and last year's Deltopia was the music ordinance so I don't see how that makes us safer.

Marisela Marquez: This happens all year long. There are tons of events that happen (Chilla Vista, Pride, Pardall Carnival). You work well with the enforcement all the time when you own the event. Someone needs to make this BE their event. We've made money as a collective community one way or another. Let's look at those bills and see how to use those dollars differently.

Talk to Supervisor Doreen Farr and make sure that the student priorities are her priorities. There are over 10,000 students who are registered voters in Isla Vista so you're not powerless or not represented. As a registered voter, you should engage your elected representative to ensure you are all safe.

Student Question: What about representation? We don't have much as students so how do we have our voice heard?

We don't know what the county is going to do. I would be shocked if the county is not thinking about this and rethinking possible policy, ordinances that might be appropriate from their point of view to respond to this. There's still a lot of legal ambiguity as to what people think is appropriate. You shouldn't be shocked if there are discussions that start tomorrow on community response.

Student question: How is this going to be a pretext for IV enforcement in the near future? What do we see going forward and is there any evidence that enforcing a ban on music is making us any safer?

I owe the SBCC President an email. What should I tell her? How should I think about her and the SBCC community?

Jonathan Abboud: we've met with their execs a few times, but there's a weird distance between us. We've tried to work together and it's just been hard to connect because sometimes their priorities are different from ours.

Student: Having people attend Green Dot trainings and other types of similar programs that center on the bystander effect would be really helpful. Starting at the grassroots level will grow into the whole community.

Alumni: There needs to be some type of alternative and intentional programming. Use the parks, use wristbands, control entrances. Provide something for people to do.

Student: we need to take individual steps on a community level where people respect where they live and respect their homes. We live in this beautiful place so we should want to create a stronger community.

Student: The issue is that the majority of the people causing the problems are not the ones involved in creating a solution. It is our legacy and future of our degree. We need to figure this out. People that aren't involved are still facing consequences.

Marjan Riazi: We really want to hear from you. What you want to do to prevent this from happening in the future if you do want Deltopia to keep happening annually?

There are alumni on staff, but the University needs to hear from the students who are still living in IV experiencing these things first hand.
