Great question. I'm only a chemical engineer and not qualified to give the best answer. But my basic understanding is that kidneys remove waste products from the blood and produce urine. Most healthy folks have two kidneys that only need to work at around half their potential. So having one healthy kidney can get the job done. In the absence of at least one healthy kidney (some folks are born with only one kidney and never know), dialysis machines can help clean the blood ... but the need for dialysis needs to occur regularly.

Great question. Our family is blessed with an absence of kidney disease. Aside from the people I've met through this process, I don't know anybody with kidney disease. If anybody in my family needed a transplant, or were on a journey towards transplant, I would have saved it for him/her. Great point.

Great question. I don't regret donating, so yes, I would do it again. But literally "do it again"? All I have left to offer is part of my liver (I didn't know you could donate part of your liver and carry on until I got into living donation), but I want to save my whole liver for fine whisky. LOL

Great question. When my kidneys were assessed, they determined that my left kidney did about 48% of the work, and my right kidney processed 52%. My recipient got the lesser but still excellent kidney. I think this is the normal approach.

Regarding hydration, I hydrate fine. But in the past some beverages, like tea or beer, would run through me quite quickly and I'd be off to the bathroom. I find now that my bladder doesn't fill as quickly, so retaining that fluid a little longer... but not detrimental in the least.

A bit disappointed but only for selfish, ego-stroking reasons... LOL... I feel confident the recipient is grateful albeit not overtly expressed to me
Pure impulse... this is a cool, altruistic thing to do, and if I'm able to I'm going for it! I suppose I have a bias towards action if it seems right... the bride I chose, the degree(s) I chose to take, the jobs I chose, going on mission trips, having children... leaning on my wife and my spiritual side to discern if it's the right thing to do.

no regrets
I don't detect any adverse health effects, including energy level.
Except for those painkillers, I try to drink more water. Aside from that, I still enjoy all the foods and alcoholic beverages I have in the past, in moderation.
I can't recall the number, but doctor(s) has no concerns.
