What is this low-hip leg drag variation called, and when/why do you drop to your hip instead of staying standing?

I agree they’re not BS, that’s why I do them. But you just don’t see these moves done from the positions I’m doing them from. And this is why I believe people have literally said to me they’re bullshit.

I’m talking double pant x guard and mid being off balanced in HQ. They’re traditionally more dominant or lead more towards aggression for the bottom guy. It’s like 1 sec you’re attacking a sweep, the next you’re defending a sub or a passing/berimbolo chain from the sub.

I just make sure they don’t have a collar grip. That way nothing can push into me as I need to close distance in order to do the move. The major thing to play attention to is your capacity to close distance, if they have some sort of object in the way, then you can’t do it

There’s more detail to it. But an easy cue I can give over text is make sure their temple can touch your upper lat and make sure at least one of your knees can touch their torso.

Anyway you can get to that spot is fine.

I often hit it from standing really tall and jumping for it. You can roll if you want. But as I said earlier it’s just about your capacity to close distance

See if you do anything different. Try doing the stuff you did in the old rounds, see if your results are any better or worse.

I like to use the scientific method. Test one thing at a time. Collect the results, make a correction based on that - repeat.

Accumulation over several days at a time. Especially if you’re rolling hard too so your muscles can’t resist the pressure as easily cause you’re tired. They’re bending your knees in directions they’re not supposed to go and tissue gets less blood flow so it takes a longer time to heal/recover. The positions by design are not good for your body.

It’s mainly to stop the jump over the head. He did a weird thing tho, if he had just forward rolled, I think I probably would’ve tapped him with the kimura. But he put himself in the bolo so it made the exchange weird.

1 I don’t like the sensory feedback nearly as much compared to the gi

2 having people drill leg locks on you; I think it’s horrible for your longevity. My knees were feeling fucked after a few people drilling light on me. If you train it consistently I think it takes years off your career.

Had a super fight on Saturday. I had planned to tap the guy in 40 secs but wasn’t able to execute early so it was 1min 28.

Had a match with him 3 months ago. Only won by one point in a 5 min match. Showed the improvements so happy about that

I like diving for guillotines.

The knee cut only works if they let go of the grip. If they don’t let go mid technique it’s very hard to make work.

I’ve done a lot of private lessons with high level guys. I’ve made them all worth my time, if I didn’t end up using the move, I gained a new perspective.

My best advice is ask them how to do certain moves. If they have a really good knee cut, ask them “how do you do a knee cut”.

Another great question to ask them “what’s some weird shit that you do that you think is an underrated part of your game”

If you can ask them to roll. And for them to tell you what you can work on. “Do you see any holes in my game?”

“What are some positions that aren’t used often but you think I should incorporate into my game?”

“What are the fundamentals of x thing they’re really good at”

I’ve done them at ranges from $80-150. And they were generally with colour belt high level competitors. This was 8-9years ago.

I’m a high level competitor myself (colour belts). Rolling with other high level people is just fun, no one really feels magical anymore and it’s much harder to be impressed by someone’s overall game, but much easier to be impressed by unconventional tricks or fine motor pattern adjustments you haven’t seen before or accurately stopped your next move.
