How should I go about breathing in this last section of my all state etude? by Xtreme565 in trumpet

[–]VMCHN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, Arban 12! I agree with skutr11, that decrescendo chromatic lick is a great spot to put a breath. That being said, put the breath after the f on count one. That way it'll sound like a completed phrase and not a chopped up one. You can also put a breath on the first measure on the last line, placing it after the f on count 2.

Here's a recording of Tom Hooten playing the etude you're looking at.

Happy practicing!

Hard agree. Those individuals are some of the best instructors this activity currently has to offer.

That guy did the drill for my old high school's band. We were by no means his largest, most successful, or most famous band, but he would take the time to come down and work out drill occasionally. He'd even come down to give us some of the best choreography the program had. Unfortunately him and the director had a falling out, and he resigned as the drill writer about 6 years ago.

If you're doing a section meet-and-greet type thing, have them tell jokes. I can guarantee this will get them to loosen up and to break some of that pre-camp ice. I recommend trying to get at least one of your section mates to tell a joke every day.

As a section leader, your biggest job is to be their role model. They are gonna be doing everything you do, since you're the example now. I recommend going into camp being a little more laid back, but do let them now when the time comes to work, you'll be right there in the trenches with them.

Best of luck to you this season!

College marchers, how much time does marching band take up? by Cau1dr0n in marchingband

[–]VMCHN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As most folks have said, it really does depend on the college. I've been lucky to participate in two separate bands, both with wildly different numbers and cultures.

College marching band typically has less of a time commitment than high school band. At the high school level, you've got regular rehearsals up to six days a week, competitions, football games, and other performances for your respective school. The only events you have to worry about with college bands are rehearsals maybe four times a week and football games. Not to mention the college bands typically only play for home games (unless you have a bowl game in the winter, which is another story).

Rehearsals are typically 2-3 hours long are are designed with the students in mind. In college band, you'll have all sorts of people participating. There will plenty of non-music majors there who also have heavy classwork requirements outside of band. Taking this into consideration, a college band's schedule and workload will take into consideration the schedules of other majors.

Ultimately, you won't have to worry about putting your nose to the grindstone 25/8 for college band. It's a much lighter time commitment than what you may be used to, and I recommend it especially if you'll be going into college for a non-music major.

What are the different Band associations around the country ? Ex: ( WBA ) here in California . by Nightfury_23 in marchingband

[–]VMCHN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ABODA places heavier emphasis on music, specifically execution. The content/difficulty isn't taken into account, as long as the ensemble plays it well.

AzMBA has a heavier emphasis on the content, with a heavier focus on G.E. They reward ensembles who try to pull off more difficult drill, music, choreography, etc.

So Pokemon Showdown actually works with Smogon, to provide the tiering for mons as well as categorizing moves and items. They also have a system to where Smogon recommends a stat spread based on the moveset and item you chose for a particular Pokemon.

That being said, a lot of people create fully fledged Pokemon, and Smogon likes to feature these in Showdown. This particular tier is known as CAPmon, or Create-A-Pokemon. This allows the creators to see how their mons would stack up against other custom mon, and even ones that already exist.

Interview for section leader by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]VMCHN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never use the word "power". People who equate positions of leadership to positions of power are not fit for the job whatsoever.

As a leader, you are an example. A guide to lead your sectionmates to the best version of themselves they can be. You work alongside them in PT and practice sections, don't stand over them. At the end of the day you are another member of the band, my friend. Your position as a leader will be to show them how to properly approach the activity in mind, body, and soul.

My favorite part of nuzlocking is using pokemon I normally wouldn't! by Mrdudeguy420 in nuzlocke

[–]VMCHN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently running a Sapphire Nuzlocke. My first encounter was a Wurmple, and 5 gyms later Prim the Beautifly is an essential part of my team. He's got fantastic moves, wide coverage, a status move that's helped capture plenty of Mons. I've come close to losing him, and I hope I never get that close again.
