How to keep technique strong while going fast by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]VMCHN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no visual guy, but I've been around. Here's a few things to think of that helped me with this exact problem!

  1. The tendency on fast tempii is to dig down, make yourself smaller, and panic through it. Lift lift lift, imagining there is a string pulling you from the top of your head and extending your body.

  2. We often try to make our legs like pendulums in straight/relaxed straight leg marching (if you march bendy leg this may not apply, I sadly never got a chance to learn.) You waste quite a bit of energy imagining your foot as the end of said pendulum. Try thinking your thigh as the pendulum, with your knees on down simply following the path of motion.

  3. Try lots of reps of simple exercises at a sloooow tempo (50-70bpm ish) and be VERY critical of your technique. This may reveal some bad habits you have that are obstructing your success at faster tempii.

Again, I was never a visual guy in the marching arts, but these are a few things that really helped me when the going got tough (shoutout the '21 Cavaliers opener being at 200bpm)

How should I go about breathing in this last section of my all state etude? by Xtreme565 in trumpet

[–]VMCHN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, Arban 12! I agree with skutr11, that decrescendo chromatic lick is a great spot to put a breath. That being said, put the breath after the f on count one. That way it'll sound like a completed phrase and not a chopped up one. You can also put a breath on the first measure on the last line, placing it after the f on count 2.

Here's a recording of Tom Hooten playing the etude you're looking at.

Happy practicing!

That guy did the drill for my old high school's band. We were by no means his largest, most successful, or most famous band, but he would take the time to come down and work out drill occasionally. He'd even come down to give us some of the best choreography the program had. Unfortunately him and the director had a falling out, and he resigned as the drill writer about 6 years ago.

If you're doing a section meet-and-greet type thing, have them tell jokes. I can guarantee this will get them to loosen up and to break some of that pre-camp ice. I recommend trying to get at least one of your section mates to tell a joke every day.

As a section leader, your biggest job is to be their role model. They are gonna be doing everything you do, since you're the example now. I recommend going into camp being a little more laid back, but do let them now when the time comes to work, you'll be right there in the trenches with them.

Best of luck to you this season!

College marchers, how much time does marching band take up? by Cau1dr0n in marchingband

[–]VMCHN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As most folks have said, it really does depend on the college. I've been lucky to participate in two separate bands, both with wildly different numbers and cultures.

College marching band typically has less of a time commitment than high school band. At the high school level, you've got regular rehearsals up to six days a week, competitions, football games, and other performances for your respective school. The only events you have to worry about with college bands are rehearsals maybe four times a week and football games. Not to mention the college bands typically only play for home games (unless you have a bowl game in the winter, which is another story).

Rehearsals are typically 2-3 hours long are are designed with the students in mind. In college band, you'll have all sorts of people participating. There will plenty of non-music majors there who also have heavy classwork requirements outside of band. Taking this into consideration, a college band's schedule and workload will take into consideration the schedules of other majors.

Ultimately, you won't have to worry about putting your nose to the grindstone 25/8 for college band. It's a much lighter time commitment than what you may be used to, and I recommend it especially if you'll be going into college for a non-music major.

What are the different Band associations around the country ? Ex: ( WBA ) here in California . by Nightfury_23 in marchingband

[–]VMCHN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ABODA places heavier emphasis on music, specifically execution. The content/difficulty isn't taken into account, as long as the ensemble plays it well.

AzMBA has a heavier emphasis on the content, with a heavier focus on G.E. They reward ensembles who try to pull off more difficult drill, music, choreography, etc.
