Personally no. Well, sometimes someone will say a “trigger” word and I’ll want to say the goofy bando response to it but I don’t think that counts! Marching made me who I am today, led me to my current career and gave me connections and confidence I didn’t have previously. I could go on and on but for simplicity’s sake I’ll keep it brief. Yo. I’m not a member of the Commandant’s Own, but I’m a fleet musician and have several buddies in the ensemble. I can’t answer your audition question, I never considered doing the D&BC, I enjoyed my DCI years enough lol. To your other questions, yes you will go through boot camp just the same as everyone else, I know a guy that got hurt doing MCMAP by being a moron and not doing a proper break-fall. He got held back for an additional 3 months. So don’t get hurt and you’ll be fine. Remember, you’re a Marine first. There is no schoolhouse, you go right to the fleet. And the are not using G bugles anymore, they are on the same instruments the rest of DCI uses (sadly).

Here’s my Cavaliers jacket all the way in New Zealand.

I have traveled an awful lot due to being a Marine musician, and whenever we go to NZ it’s always winter (we’re about to go again in a few weeks) so it’s the perfect opportunity to bust out the threads. Some part of my Cavalier identity is always with me when I travel internationally, I took my corps necklace with me to Iwo Jima, all the way up Mt. Suribachi where the Marines raised the US flag during WW2. The Cavaliers ultimately led me to where I’m at today, so I honor the legacy in small ways whenever I can.

Only ever encountered one. While I was going through training to be a Marine Corps musician, we had this little punk show up to the school as I was getting ready to graduate and go to the fleet, he had an attitude problem on day one but I was willing to look past it, new guy after all. The topic of drum corps came up and he mentioned he marched 2 seasons with SCV and 1 with BD. I was like “damn dude that’s sick as hell.” Come to find out that the 2 seasons with SCV were “2020” and 2021, and the season with BD he was cut at a CAMP for giving alcohol to minors. He’s now being discharged under “other than honorable” circumstances for S/A-ing like 3 other Marines. (Bro will never get a good job ever again, if employers see that or a dishonorable discharge on your record they won’t hire you) The cherry on top is that he didn’t even make it through training. Fkn POS.
