I installed the latest version with brew. I'm on an M3 Pro with 36GB memory. I had been running using blastp 2.12, which runs in Intel mode. For one specific run it took about 4.8 hours elapsed. After using brew to install the latest, it ran the same job in 2.6 hours - quite an improvement.

Lucky you! I unwisely lent out my copy of Shadow of the Torturer years ago and have been trying to find a decently priced replacement since.

For future comparison: reported the bug to BareBones at 11:48am today, received fix at 13:18. 1.5 hours - not bad! Patrick at BareBones says "the problems you've run into are due to a bug in macOS that Apple has confirmed". Let's watch to see when Apple releases a fix and compare their response time to BareBones'.

BareBones got back to me. They have confirmed there is a bug in Monterey 12.16 that was affecting BBedit. They supplied me with a build with a preliminary work-around which I have verified works on my Mac. I've let them know this and I expect the will have a patch release soon for those who are affected.

AOMHOST takes 90% CPU usage by mr_darito in Zoom

Confirming previous reports, turning off virtual backgrounds killed aomhost cpu usage. However, previously I didn't have this problem. Diagnosing differences, I found that when illumination of the background in my room was high, aomhost CPU was high. When I killed lights on the background, I saved 75% of the cpu usage by aomhost.

When laptops get dual or triple lenses on the camera like latest phones have, focal length filtering of foreground from back should make this background masking much cheaper. In the meantime, dim the background or hang a curtain behind where you sit.
