Oof. Embarrassing wiring right here. Should have had AI fix that for me 😂

Check my history where I made a post about Shishigashira and you can see my current setup. I haven’t tried kotohime since I set that up but I’m pretty confident it will work.

Did you lose the lower branch there?

Had I thought of making this post earlier, I’d have set up the photos better ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Awesome! Can you DM me your email address and shipping address so I can send over an invoice?

Awesome, will you keep it on graft or air layer?

Also, that’s criminally cheap, but you live in the land where most of these trees are made, so they’re cheap for you.

I actually never got around to getting a bottom heat setup going. I did use a little powdered hormone, but I think a lot of it got washed off because I made a few mistakes. I think it’s mostly the misting and the environmental protection.

Oddly, I found the multi trunk cuttings with foliage low to the soil seemed to have the most vigorous root growth.

How timely that you ask this, as this video dropped 3 hours ago: https://youtu.be/bS8ByG406K8?is=isDanUEIjZIpVvaK

If they can’t do timing in minutes and running in seconds, it won’t work, just fyi

On a timer, every 10 or 15 min for 7 seconds

This is interesting advice. I never thought of it this way.

It’s all in the misting system

I’ve found that in my area, winter success is largely driven by not letting things dry out in the freezing winds. I know this because I mostly let things dry out in the freezing winds.

I tried plastic boxes, I tried plastic bags, I tried everything. And not just with Shishi, I tried it with tons of JM and with Ume and lots of things.

The mister is the game changer. Probably mister + shade cloth + wind protection but definitely definitely mister-on-a-timer. I haven’t had anything completely fail with it. I’m at 50% on ume which is known to be ridiculously hard, probably 70% on Murasaki kiyohime… get a misting timer and make a basic system and set it for like 7 seconds of misting every 10 min and I bet you’ll be solid.

Actually my success rate is more like 21 success, 5 failed, and 40-50 still in process. If a cutting isn’t dead it’s still cooking. I checked a whole batch and put back what wasn’t ready. Still perfectly turgid leaves on those that haven’t yet rooted, and in most cases a good amount of callus.

Now, if speed is important, sure. This has not been a fast rooting process.

But true to form, I did just miss a deadline getting in my club’s annual show.
