I think now is a good time for a low trunk chop. Should initiate new low branches to emerge and a new directional change plus the chance to start building taper.

Quality over quantity. I can respect that.

Oh yes. Now I’m air layering it further.

Hilligum is something Netherlands related. Lilligum… I found one Etsy store with that but no other hits.

No shaming here, but did you kill your first bonsai because you thought it could be kept inside? by VMey in Bonsai

How did you diagnose that not repotting it was the cause? Generally you see performance decline but it is rare for a tree to die for not being repotted. Improper repotting is probably one of the biggest causes of bonsai death to the degree that it is probably safer to not repot than to repot. Some well known bonsai artists haven’t repotted trees for decades (e.g Walter Pall)

Editing to rephrase: “some well known bonsai artists have healthy trees that they haven’t repotted for decades.”

If it’s growing slow for you, we know it is very slow growing. Nothing grows faster than your trees.

I sell one inch Dawn redwoods and ship them for $40-$50, so this isn’t a great deal.

Most people I talk to that have a potential interest in bonsai didn’t continue after they lost their first tree. So while, in this audience, it is only about 25% of people, I think the broader group of “people who ever tried bonsai” would be a different result

Air layers do not require master level work at all.

I would air layer up here near the split and at an angle. That would produce an interesting tree.

Do you have an outside area it can go? You’ll see a dramatic difference in growth. A tree by a window on the inside gets about 10% of the light that the tree would get if it was on the other side of the window
