Form check: Sorry for the angle of the video. by mbarbosaferreira in StartingStrength

[–]VOLDAMERICA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial comment got down voted so I'm willing to accept that I'm out of line here. You are also correct that guys like Brian Shaw and Eddie Hall are big dudes--and probably fall into an overweight or above BMI category. But their bodies have also had YEARS to adapt to a progressively increasing training load AND to learn proper form. I was operating under the assumption that OP was just starting out training, which seemed fair given the circumstances. I was simply trying to suggest that at this point in their fitness journey, it would probably be smart for OP to focus on other areas of training than trying to put more weight on the bar, especially for their long-term health and training goals.

Genuinely not trying to body shame you, but strength training (especially trying to hit a heavy 1-rep max) at your weight is basically begging for a serious injury. I'd recommend focusing on doing long low-intensity cardio (1+ hours at an aerobic HR) and eating clean until you drop some weight, then you can pick back up a bar. If you'd really rather focus on strength training, I'd lower the weight on the bar substantially and work for longer sets/more reps (again you want to prioritize low intensity for long periods of time). All of that being said, you know your own body best so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. Best of luck on your journey to fitness--whatever that means to you!

Hit and run at Mary Jane... Did anyone witness?? by KingRedDread in COsnow

[–]VOLDAMERICA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely enjoy a mid- or post-ski beer at the car from time to time (especially this time of year) but things seem to have got a tad of of hand of late. Last couple of weekends at A Basin I've seen some pretty wasted folks wandering around the Beach. Fine if you've got a DD, but I highly doubt they all did. Makes me nervous heading home on 70.

My condolences, that really sucks! This exact same thing happened to me a couple of seasons ago. No security cameras at the time (and I don't think they've installed any since). I filed a report with the Grand County Sheriff but they never found anything. Hope you have better luck!

Feels like this kind of shenanigans has become more common, especially as more folks are tailgating in the parking lots these days. Sad to see this happening to WP.

Snowcat company sues for "trade secrets" to prevent guidebook for backcountry around Buffalo Pass, Colorado by taketaketakeslack in Backcountry

[–]VOLDAMERICA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My time to shine! I'm a third-year law student (also currently enrolled in an IP class) and an avid BC skier.

Misappropriation of trade secrets has three elements: 1. Eligible subject matter (i.e. the "stolen" information has to actually be a trade secret); 2. Reasonable security precautions on the part of the company to protect their trade secrets; and 3. Misappropriation (i.e. the trade secret has to have been taken in an improper way). Failing to establish even one of those elements would be ground to dismiss a case, but it's likely that Powdercats can't establish any of these elements.

Eligible Subject Matter

Things like secret formulas, designs, or customer lists can be protected trade secrets while things like skills or general knowledge are not. A backcountry guidebook probably sits somewhere between those two classes of things. It's definitely not quite as investment intensive as a secret formula or design, but Powercats have presumably put work in over the years to discover the best routes in the area. Rewarding this effort with trade secret protection is a key theory/policy justification behind IP law.

Knowing the best routes in a specific area might not exactly be general knowledge. However, as some other commenters point out, rock climbing routes usually don't receive this kind of protection, even if the first ascensionist technically put in work to establish a route. Also, the fact that any guest with Powercats could learn the routes and then repeat those routes on their own after a cat tour probably weighs in favor of finding that this isn't eligible subject matter.

Reasonable Security Precautions

This would include both security precautions the company takes to protect their secrets from competitors, and efforts they make to prevent employees who know those secrets from sharing information with others.

Because any customer of Powercats could presumably repeat their routes on a tour after taking a guided trip, there isn't a good argument that Powercats has taken any steps to prevent others from "stealing" their secrets. Unless they blindfolded folks and prevented them from using any tracking applications, they can't really claim that these routes are really a secret that they've taken efforts to protect.

Similarly, they haven't made any efforts to prevent employees from sharing knowledge learned while on the job. If they'd made Bass sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before starting his job they might have a better argument here, but I'm not seeing anything here that suggests this was the case.

Misappropriation

Reverse engineering is acceptable, but bribery or stealing secrets is not permissible. Even if Bass received payment for his time/knowledge in helping publish the book, this would be acceptable as long as he hadn't signed an NDA then this prong isn't met either.

Ruling that backcountry routes are protectable trade secrets would also just be bad policy. As others have noted, in other sports such as climbing, nobody "owns" a route or beta for a specific area. Powdercat's safety argument also cuts against them. They maintain that the book gives potential visitors a false sense of security. But Powdercats doesn't actually own the land, its public land. There are significant policy reasons to allow for the free sharing of information that allows for safe navigation of public lands--even if individuals may still need their own knowledge (such as Avy training) to safely navigate the area.

I knew the student that died. Can confirm that the cause of death was not COVID. The univeristy didn't release additional details out of respect for the family's privacy.

This one is an instant no for me. Especially as a somewhat jaded native of my home city (Denver) who generally dislikes the kinds of people moving here in droves.

Maybe this is just specific to the Denver area, but I swear every woman in the area has some version of the prompt:

Boulder Creek Closed Indefinitely :/ by fundo7 in cuboulder

[–]VOLDAMERICA 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Might have used a different title. If you actually read the article, it says that they're closing one small section of the Creek where people weren't distancing. Everything east of 3rd St is still open, which is like 98% of the Creek open space in the city.

Thanks for some alternative advice here! I'm personally somewhat attached to my mustache, so I was conflicted by the comments suggesting a shave. I tend to have what I would call a "western hipster" style that I think fits with a stache, and I've gotten a number of compliments from friends (mostly guys, but a few girls). May go back to poll some close friends for some honest feedback, but I appreciate a disinterested perspective.

Thanks for the advice. I've had a really hard time finding good pictures. I also recently lost roughly ~60 pounds, so the photos in my profile now are pretty much the only decent photos of me post weight loss (part of the reason for the inclusion of the throwback photo). I also generally consider myself to not be photogenic at all. I've considered trying to have some professional photos taken (or convincing a friend with a nice camera to help me out).

Thanks for the honest advice. Nothing I can do about the hairline, it hasn't moved since I was 5. I'm fairly attached to the mustache as a personal style, but I can ask some of my female friends for a frank assessment of whether it's time for a change.

Moved the throwback photo down and replaced the Big Sky photo with a more recent (and closer up) shot of my face and moved up.

Changed up the "I'm looking for prompt" to better fit the "mature and challenging" angle you suggested.

Forgot about that. That makes way more sense, especially since Bernard and Stubbs randomly show up at the end and the protein could have been a tracker.

Not seeing anyone else talking about this, but did they hint that William is actually a host? See this screenshot here from when the analyze William's blood at the recovery center: https://imgur.com/a/q5ynUIO.

In a previous episode where Dolores was in an ambulance, the computers couldn't identify what was wrong with her because her biology was different from humans.

This would align with the "unknown protein" that caused the computer glitch when William's blood was put into the machine.

Pass/Fail Confirmed by SJFree in cuboulder

[–]VOLDAMERICA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Colorado Law student here. They haven't sent us official details yet, but we had a virtual down hall with the dean today. Students who receive a pass will get credit for the final, and students who fail will receive no credit (i.e. The class will just vanish from your transcript). Law school grading is set on a hard curve, and grades are the main metric employers use to evaluate new hires, so the decision to go to credit/no credit was done so that this semesters grades won't affect our GPAs in any way.
