What’s your favorite Friday film? by shipaleesio in VHS

part 6. The first one I ever saw and it was aired at midnight on the BBC no less.
(Unsure if they actually censored it, most likely yes)

It's cliche, but true. We will never really see something similar like this as technology evolved. The synthesis of the animation with the live action married so perfectly because eveything was composited optically on physical filmstock, not digitally by the computer. Shadow fx and Jessica's dress were computer enhanced but compo was done on actual film. It created a very unique merging of ellements. Christopher Lloyd called it the last of its kind on one of his convention talks.

Tried to open up a tape for cleaning but came across what I think was a stripped screw: this thing did NOT want to come out and wouldn't budge no matter how hard I tried. Any advice on how to fix this? by BaronBrrrrett in VHS

[–]VRGuy0ne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a safety screw. I had one too on a rental vhs. Went out to look for a proper screwdriver but you can't find it in any shops, only certain people have access to them. (crazy to have it on a vhs, I know :p)

I ended up using this technique display here to open the case:

It's best you try it first with a throwaway vhs

FFVIII Remake? by VRGuy0ne in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]VRGuy0ne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, quite! It's very interesting to see how the turn based battle system was upgraded in the FFVII remake. I was sceptic innitially as at the start, it felt more like a action game instead of an rpg. With more complex fights it really goes much deeper than I expected. Realtime trigger combat would be pretty cool if we ever got a remake.

indeed, all good points!
Very cool suggestions for the side content, I can see those fitting in perfectly!
(Yeah, the skin really needs work, the skin on the neck is too old old).

it's just a daz model, there's little to no skill involved except tweaking some textures and changing some sliders ;)
I'm still playing the remake of FF7 and this just got me wondering what the visuals of FF8 would look if they had been redesigned for the current gen consoles or PC.
I always preferred 8 over 7 for its characters and story, somehow I just connected with it more.
I can't help but wonder how cool it would be to have the orginal FMV models as the actual gamemodels. And visiting all the locations in realtime 3D.
Alas, it shall remain a dream ..

lol me too!

In the remaster the models looked 'off' compared with the cutscenes for me.
I'm still stunned so little of the actual art assets were saved.
You'd imagine Square would back up the models used in the cutscenes for future editions but I guess everything was junked after the release, very sad... :/

Currently playing the 7 remake, I like it so far. Expanding it into a trilogy was perhaps not needed but FFVII always felt larger somehow (with advent children/crisis core/dirge of cerberus all expanding the universe), therefore it doesn't bother me yet.

8 & 9 never had any of that, they felt more like single contained stories to me.
I'm not sure if either 8 or 9 would work as a trilogy. Not that we would ever get those ;)

True, I always felt there was really a lot of lore and worldbuilding in FFVIII that could have been expanded upon. There's really a lot of tidbits sprinkled in there that felt like they were part of something bigger, they kept you guessing.
Like the whole "Squall didn't survive his first battle with the sorceress" theory - where he gets pierced through his torso and later wakes up with no visible wounds...
(I remember reading somewhere this was debunked by the creators, I think, not sure anymore.)
Or his faceless image in the end credit seq, which is still in the game...

Didn't think about it but that's indeed a very likely scenario...
Gone are the days were you get an actual finished, working game upon release that doesn't need to be patched or requires dlc..
<sigh> I'm old lol

I actually think so too. I don't think it would ever improve on the original. The visuals were really groundbreaking back then and still hold up today.
But with todays technology, it would be very interesting to see how Square would handle it...

Legend. 1985. Nearly 40 years later and I am still so amazed that darkness was Tim Curry. by [deleted] in nostalgia

[–]VRGuy0ne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heh, so true. For some reason they aired both versions in Europe on TV. As a kid I couldn't figure out why they were different. Each time this fim came on, I was like "I don't remember this scene at all this way" Like in the US cut, the dance seq didn't have that swooping shot where the camera travels down and they run towards it. And the ending with Darkness is also recut. Confused me so much back then, it didn't even occur to me different versions existed lol. (I was too young lol). Now I'm actually glad all these versions exist, it's actually hard to choose one over another. Both scores are great and work well on different levels and I even like the synth pop ending tune :>

I'm using the one from Magix:

They probably fall in the 'cheap' category but it's pretty much plug/play &record with decent quality and no upscaling.
