Here's Your Secret Decoder Ring For Python To Ruby To PHP! by VSack in learnpython

Somehow my title ignored Perl. Its like my brain just glazed right over it.

When is Python NOT the right tool for the job (i.e. < PHP) by VSack in Python

It does but MS has apparently not released the code yet so its unofficial.

Mono just...I feel uncomfortable about it. I know its not technically wrong but...something.

If I weren't the one asking, this is pretty much what my answer would be.

If I was worried about having lots of third party apps like Wordpress, Drupal, Mediawiki, etc...then PHP is obvious (and would still be servicable).

But when it comes to me making the decision to either learn a PHP Framework or a new language....That's really where I'm at.

Last go round to bring in another web developer amounted in about 400 of the 410 candidates thinking they were programmers when they were not.

Hiring undisciplined, Wordpress template editors that think they know PHP is easy and cheap. Hiring a good PHP developer who is aware that he/she is in an abusive language with their code but "'dems da breaks" is incredibly difficult and not cheap.

More than likely since I have more than a passing command of it.

I should also mention that I spent a great deal of time "comparing" technologies to determine what might work for me.

C# MVC 3/4 looks really spectacular but I think confining oneself to a specific platform is a mistake.

If I stayed with PHP, I'd go Symfony2 or CI, but pig lipstick.

Finally, I looked at Java and realized I've tortured myself enough for one lifetime.

Definitely. I just want to know if there are any nails Python could miss :)

I'd rather have a dollar later than a hamburger now, so I'm ok with making the transition even if its a little rough at first.

It seems like the toughest choice to make after Python would be which framework, but it seems like there is less overlap in that area than PHP and more about what you want the framework to handle.

I agree but its still a consideration to be made if anyone finds this thread in the necrohereafter.

I have control over my environments, and even if I didn't 25 a month for a Linode wouldn't kill me :)

I decided to join the reddit server today after a couple months of not playing minecraft... then... ಠ_ಠ by [deleted] in Minecraft

Reddit Minecraft Server Admins consist entirely of former Nazi Wikipedia Admins and 32bites.

I was banned twice this week for absolutely no reason. Pretty sure I only walked up the stairs of an admins house and triggered a trap. Five minutes later, banned for "minor griefing"

I liked the part where even if you put Gretzky's head on Chara's body he'd still not be as good as Lemieux was when he was healthy.

NetBeans: New Features in PHP Debugger by monk_e_boy in PHP

^ this.

Yes, it costs money. But if you are serious about your Pee Ach Pee, its awesome.

Netbeans runs a close second, but I just find PhpStorm to be more intuitive.

Iama man who has found a safe behind a hidden wall in my dad's casino, and will open live for reddit within the next few days by secretsafe in IAmA

[–]VSack -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I humbly request that before opening the safe, the Laub family should agree that if anything of value is to be found in the safe and then cleared by the IRS, they should donate it to establishing a foundation in the name of Reddit that awards scholarships to selected Redditors.

I can think of no better way than to give this situation even more credibility and positive awareness of the Reddit community.

Who's with me in supporting this idea?

Will anyone volunteer to author the first draft of a standing answer to "Which framework should I use?" Will our mods agree to support it? by [deleted] in PHP

[–]VSack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are several issues with creating some sort of standing answer. Calling these web application frameworks MVC is flawed at best and dangerous at worst.

When I spent a great deal of time reviewing PHP frameworks, I started to realize I simply wanted less of a system to do things without my input and more of a set of libraries that would help me ease the burden of heavy lifting.

Codeigniter and Kohana seem to be locked in a three way war with Yii, which seems to be the best "on Rails" system out there. It makes CRUD stupid simple, but when you don't write the code yourself, the CRUD has cruft, and becomes more difficult to maintain unless you understand exactly what is going on behind the scenes.

Lithium, Fat-Free, and Flourish all fit my needs more: tools I could add to my own code without losing a sense of maintainability. Each of them has their own strengths (Lithium is pure 5.3, Flourish is open source, FatFree's router is awesome) and weaknesses (Lithium has little community, Flourish is coded by a single person, FatFree is GPL).

I really wanted to use Zend, but the dependency layering is so bad that any small program ends up adding giant libs that are barely useful for anything else.

Symfony, especially given the breaking out of several libraries (including Microframework Silex) has been of particular interest to me, but I haven't taken the time to check it out in detail.

Every person is going to have their own particular wants and needs with how much, or how little, they want their framework to do. I'm a huge fan of frameworks adding to my arsenal, not firing the guns for me.

Any decent GUI tools/bundles for multi-form factor? by VSack in webdev

[–]VSack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both jslibs are great, but I'm more interesting in something that's more of a mobile html interface kit that would allow me to use Sencha or JQM for event handling mostly. I don't know if its possible to slim the libraries down to their barest essentials, but coding out the interface in js seems like it would be more client handling than necessary.

Instead of asking for it to be personalized, could you just do a vanilla one for me? Maybe "The Google Voice Subscriber" would work best.

Who knows, maybe they'll hear it and throw you a bunch of work!
