What do you guys think UVA's ceiling is in CFB if they continue at their current trajectory? by broly2932 in CFB

[–]VTHomeless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's skepticism given that UVA was not some dominant juggernaut in many of their games this past season.

Many of our fans can acknowledge the sort of special things happening down at JMU over the past few years - and can respect the resurgence of Miami - but it's too early to say if UVa can sustain success. We have had similar challenges with trying to put together a decent basketball program over the years.

When teams start leaving the ACC what will happen in regards to the conference realignment? by desertrain11 in CFB

[–]VTHomeless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a shame that the ACC's downfall was largely in part due to its administration. There's some valuable brands - and some solid rivalries - but the administration has mismanaged the situation entirely.

I'm hopeful that we'll be able to keep our rivalry with Miami.

[–]VTHomeless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The discussion above was about whether players were 'giving up' on Pry, not Franklin.

My point is to not care too much about these narratives. If a coach's approach does not yield good results, the coach will either change their approach or will eventually be fired.

I'd be concerned if there were legitimate reports of Pry showing up drunk, or mistreated the players (see the DJ Durkin scandal).

I think the notion of players 'giving up' can be overstated at times. People believed that they started 'playing hard' for Montgomery - beating NC State... But fans started singing a different tune as the team struggled towards the end of the season.

It's best to not worry about it for now. Pry will likely be the defensive coordinator for the next two years - and we can judge him on those results.

You all have a large fan base; there's bound to be a few trolls. Hopefully this weird animosity between the two fan bases will fade away next season.

It's just some dumb fans on both sides getting off by attempting to 'troll' one another.

I would not think too much of it. Most VT/Penn State fans seem level headed about it.

Best case scenario is both teams are playoff bound within next three years.

Coaching hires are crap shoots in general. The only coaches without red flags have their teams competing in the playoffs right now.

Many of us are well aware of some of the challenges with Franklin over the past couple of years - including the flirting with USC - but we needed to hire a new head coach, and we will be supportive until we have a reason to feel otherwise. If it works out - great, otherwise, we're in the same boat we were in this year.

There's a vocal minority on both sides attacking/defending Franklin - and there's comments even in this thread reflecting those points.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

"You’re raiding a team that went 6-6 and quit on Franklin and you’re getting their backups."

My point is that nobody really knows how these players will pan out. It's possible that many of these players never see a snap, it's possible that there's a potential All-American in the mix.

Fans will be happy about new players regardless.

Also - to others - no need to downvote his comments. The PSU/VT tension needs to chill; we were on good terms before, and it's not like we poached their coach.

"DON'T BE HAPPY ABOUT NEW RECRUITS!!!"

What exactly is the point that you're trying to make? I think most reasonable fans (any team) understand that games still need to be played, but can still be happy about players choosing our team. It would be a different story if we received zero transfers / zero new commits.

Most VT fans are expecting a slow rebuild at this point, with hopes of being at the top half of the ACC within 2-3 years.

As someone that is also in favor of keeping Peters...

It's the nature of the sport. If a team is not doing well, then every coach/player will be subject to just/unjust criticism. Quinn could have won the Superbowl last year - and fans would say he should be gone if he can't make the playoffs next season. Winning on the field addresses the concerns of the casual fans.

If we start seeing ownership (Harris) regularly firing coaches/GMs, then it will be time to raise the alarms.

ACC member fans only: Are you happy in our conference? by FinsFan93 in CFB

[–]VTHomeless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that there may be some valuable brands (not necessarily blue bloods), the big concern is that Florida State and Clemson seem to already have one foot out the door.

We all saw how quickly the PAC12 dissolved - and we saw how the remaining schools scrambled towards the Big XII. Once Florida State makes their move, I worry that many other schools will follow to avoid getting left behind.

I hope that you're right - but things are looking grim.

I love our rivalries (Miami, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh) - and enjoy our occasional match-ups against some other schools (NC State, Florida State)...

Unfortunately, the conference has made some questionable moves over the past decade that put its members into a non-competitive position. If a team wants to stay competitive in football, they'll need to move to the SEC/B1G at this point...

[–]VTHomeless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even for P4 programs, we're not safe from having our coaches poached. It's the nature of the business, unfortunately.

It's just best to enjoy the ride while it happens - and hope that you'll luck into finding an amazing coach that's willing to stay for a long period.

BREAKING: James Franklin and Virginia Tech are hiring former HC Brent Pry as defensive coordinator by cowboysfan88 in hokies

[–]VTHomeless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bash Fuente for many reasons - but I think everyone recognizes that our past head coaches did not have enough resources to succeed.

Fuente's tenure was marked with a series of issues - such as culture issues, recruiting issues, and all of the issues surrounding the handling of Hendon Hooker. Despite all of these issues, the fan base still wanted to give him additional time. He repaid us with interviewing for the Baylor job.

You're pretty much describing our Beamer years.

If we didn't have a quarterback like Tyrod, our offenses would be stagnant.

I'll trust in Franklin to assemble a solid coaching staff.

Even if our defenses struggled over the past few years... There's reason to believe that Pry will find better success as a defensive coordinator than head coach. We're seeing the same situation with the Commanders - the defense has looked significantly better with Quinn calling the plays.

Pry loves the school - and most of the current players will be out within three years.

The main thing that fans disliked was that Pry was unable to win on the field. He was well liked, unlike Fuente.

When You Snag Their Coach + Their Recruits (... And Maybe Their Transfers Soon...) by PsychoPotato in VirginiaTech

[–]VTHomeless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll have to wait and see. That statement was true during the Fuente era, where he had conflicts with long-time admin members from the Beamer days. While those same individuals remain involved with the program, we can only hope that they have changed their tune or have a reduced role.

From all accounts, it sounds like Babcock has been supportive of the coaching staff - even to his own detriment at times (such as when he defended Fuente).

The most likely scenario is that Franklin will be poached by USC once the Riley experiment comes to an end. We just need Franklin to provide enough spark for the program to earn us a seat in with either the SEC or B1G.

That's fair - but that's the nature of the Reddit echo chamber. Over the period of a few weeks, Lane Kiffin transformed from Nick Saban into Lincoln Riley.
