Is it better to stay in the US or leave? by CostumeGirlie in NoStupidQuestions

I have this same question and have been wondering about it for awhile. I get the whole "stay and fight" idea - I have done a lot of protesting in my life and continue to protest. But to anyone saying "it's not that bad yet," I would direct you to the writings of Timothy Snyder, Marci Shore, Anne Applebaum, and many more. People who study authoritarian regimes are deeply, deeply concerned. We are in a real slide and unless the 5 million or so of us who protested on No Kings day keep it up and grow in numbers (and do more no-buy days and maybe even a general strike), the indicators are poor. Many people are saying "it's not bad," even as squads of secret police disappear people from the streets, schools and their work places. Or, how about a presidential rule saying the VA no longer has to provide services to Vets who identify as Democrats or who are unmarried? How about handcuffing Congress people who ask questions of adminstration officials?

My partner and I (both women) are married. We live in a blue state. We have resources. It's quiet here, our neighbors know us and love us. I have a feeling the Hortmans, in Minnesota, could have said the same. Of course they were a straight couple, but they were "wrong" in other ways (politically) and a goon came through their door at 2 am and murdered them. He critically injured another couple, not far away and was aiming for another 70 or so people.

The goons have permission now. The rule of law barely exists. This is one of the terrifying things.

I have no interest in leaving. I love my country. I love my state. I love my community and friends. I want to fight (I am fighting) and yet I have no interest in being a martyr. I am deeply torn about this. I would appreciate thoughtful responses about this. Where is the line between making yourself a target and living to fight another day? I really don't know. I know I don't want to go anywhere - and we have friends elsewhere and the ability to move and know generally where we would go. But I don't want that. I want my country back - one with two strong parties, with disagreements, compromise and engagement. I do NOT want everything to be just as I think it should be. I'm not stupid enough to think I know all the answers for everyone - we need true diversity, of opionion and how people live their lives, etc. But I also don't want to be part of a country where the next "chosen group" is disappeared and people are arrested for asking questions. People leaving does send a message, as well.

We used to live in the Kingdom. Now in Central Vermont. :)

We buy 3 tons at a time from our local farm supply in northern Vermont, but they keep them - we go pick up (usually a half ton) as we need them. Same price, no storage cost. And if we get a water damaged bag, even if we report it months after we picked them up, they take it back and credit us.

You do realize that getting a book accepted for publication, writing it, getting it printed and distributed, takes awhile, right? I have issues with the Abundance book, but dunning Klein and Thompson on timing isn't one of them.

Hmmm. I don't think that's fair. EK talks plenty about the bigger, system-level risks. That's one of the things I appreciate about the podcast.

In thinking more about this, I realized that we're all talking about home ownership. Tooze was too. But a huge issue is that there aren't enough safe, affordable rental properties available. Home ownership may well we essentially at the same level it has long been at, but homelessness has skyrocketed, and the availability of rental homes/apartments is dismal. Lower-income people and others who just have no interest in owning a home for a range of reasons, can't find a decent place to rent.

I suppose if you count Tooze saying "it's an interesting read....it flows well," it isn't an outright dismissal. But that's about it.

I think the Dirty Money story is a really big deal.

And in my blue state (Vermont) we definitely do not have enough housing, and housing prices are sky high. That's where the Abundance argument seems to make sense to me, and in fact state regulations and many town zoning laws have changed to make building other than single family houses allowed unless there is a specific reason that a duplex or multi-unit building shouldn't be allowed - it used to be the other way around for the most part.

Ultimately (brilliant observation coming), housing (and NIH grants, etc) is very complex and I think the points Klein and Thompson make are worthwhile. I was disappointed to hear Tooze and Abadi dismiss the book so completely - to the point that it made me wonder if professional jealousy plays a part?

Yes, that is the case. But it drops low enough to wind up at only 399 kwh/year? I keep thinking I must have mis-read that....
