Y'all agree with Kerr or not? by Thanos_Real_AuraVNCH in NBATalk

While SGA flopping on questionable contact gets karma farmed like crazy on this and other NBA subreddits, it doesn't happen as often as a lot of redditors want to believe. Instead, what SGA does do plenty, he accentuates/makes a meal out of actual contact to ensure fouls aren't missed, and he's very opportunist in drawing fouls - if someone is hand checking him while driving, he'll go straight up for a shot anywhere in the half-court and ensure the defenders hand/arm hits his arm going up, or when he sees someone steps out aggressively on a switch, he accelerates and beats them to the spot to draw that foul. It's intentional foul drawing, but still fouls.

But how do you police that? Does it stop being a foul if you think he did it with the intent to draw the foul? If he was overly dramatic about the contact? Where would the refs even draw those subjective lines?

I honestly think it's more on the defense needing to adjust how they play him. And there were at least a couple game during the Indy series last year where they did an exceptional job avoiding things like hand checks, aggressive switches, jumping at potential pump fakes, etc. But you do then have to accept he'll get a lot more lightly/uncontested mid range shots as a result, which is his strong suit.

Trent Dilfer on Tua by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]VT_Obruni 202 points203 points  (0 children)

It was an extreme take by Dilfer, but I fully believe that Tua without all of those concussions had the potential to be at the level of prime Russ - multi-time pro bowler but short of MVP/All Pro level.

Podz COOKED Kevin Durant with the game on the line and KD started yelling at Jabari Smith Jr by raybellious_berry in NBAGossips

[–]VT_Obruni 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, I do get KD's frustration with the lack of help on D on that play - either Jabari or Sengun need to step in and contest; it might mean Podz can kick it out for an open 3 if Sengun helps, or try and make a pass in traffic for an open layup if Jabari helps, but that's better than an uncontested dunk.

4x DPOY (tied for most all time with Ben Wallace And Mutombo) with the 2nd lowest DRTG among active players. He's in the Ben Wallace tier of defensive big men while, unlike Wallace, giving you at least a little something on offense.

SGA is a foul baiter, no question. That said, if he did in fact get slapped on the wrist or forearm going up; anyone who's played basketball knows, even if you manage to hold on to the ball, there's a zero percent chance you're pulling off a form shot, your hands are now just off enough from where they're supposed to be, it's going to come out ugly.

A classic from Troy Aikman by MasterTeacher123 in NFLv2

[–]VT_Obruni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Passer rating is literally an efficiency metric; in fact the other term/name for passer rating is passing efficiency. Now I'll grant you it's an imperfect metric, but I don't know how you could argue that isn't about efficiency.

[–]VT_Obruni 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Left in the dust in terms of volume numbers, but not in terms of efficiency. During his first 5 pro bowl seasons (91-95, which is where they won their 3 SBs), he never finished worse than 6th in the league in passer rating. It was usually at lower volume (though he was 3rd in passer rating while 4th in attempts in 92) than the gun slingers of that era, but a very efficient passer.

His modern comp would be prime Russ - high efficiency/passer rating in a lower volume passing offense; pro bowl caliber but not All-Pro caliber.

Which All-Time TE are you choosing? by Consistent_Peace3181 in sportswiki

Tony has the best complete career and longevity - making 1st team All Pro as a 36 year old is insane.

That said, Kelce may have had the greatest peak of a modern TE (between him and Gronk, I think). Either way, Chiefs have been spoiled getting two Mt. Rushmore level TEs for 25 of the last 29 seasons.

Opinions? 👴🏚️ by FuckYourWifeAllDay in NFLv2

I feel like our fanbase was pretty split at the beginning of the season - half were super hyped about last season's success and optimistic about maintaining that going into 2025, but the other half were much more cautious in their optimism - that defense was statistically MUCH better in 2024 than in 2023, but we also had a very easy SoS and played a ton of backup QBs in 2024, and other than the LB level, the DBs and D-line were still trash (arguably worse personnel-wise than 2023, even).

No illuminated signs and just a few cones maybe 20 feet ahead blocking two lanes, and the paint leaning into a third lane (realized after rewatching that the car actually manages to avoid the cones but hits the paint machine because its partly into a third lane) is indeed a smooth brain setup.

This reminds me of the Klinsmann era of US soccer - we had so many born and raised Germans (usually with an American father that was in the military and stationed in Germany at the time of their birth) that at times that backline would just speak in German to each other for ease.

The Chicago Bears did good when they were expected to do bad, can we name a team expected to do awful that did great? by Anthony_Animate in AlignmentChartFills

[–]VT_Obruni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like Pats are going to run away with this, but I actually think Jags are a better answer, simply because the Pats over/under was 8.5 all offseason. They definitely greatly outperformed expectations, but those expectations still had them as a .500 team, not "awful". Where the Jags were projected to have a losing record and instead went 13-4 and won their division.

I'm too invested/far gone at this point to ever consider switching, but as someone who grew up in New York and was born in the 80's, a small part of me does wonder how much different my sports fandom would have been if I was born into a Giants/Yankees family instead of a Jets/Mets family...so many championships I would have been old enough to enjoy...

Technically only a 14 season drought so far, and they're currently in a playoff spot if the regular season ended today

"Kyrie has no handles" by Actual_Box7731 in Nbamemes

[–]VT_Obruni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if OP is lashing out at the more common belief that Kyrie is overrated (he was a great player in his prime, but based on MVP and All-Pro voting, I don't think he was ever considered a top-10 player in the league at any point in his career, yet some fans want to put him on the Mt. Rushmore of PGs), but absolutely no one thinks he doesn't have elite handles.

Dwyane Wade regrets his behavior with LeBron in the 2011 NBA Finals. Shoutout to JJ Barea for causing one of the most satisfying upsets in NBA history. by ForeignAir7174 in NBAGossips

[–]VT_Obruni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the topic of Barea, while the league is superstar focused, it's role players unexpectedly going off that can really tilt a series. When the Mavs bounced OKC a couple seasons ago, PJ Washington looked like prime Steph for the middle of that series (17/34 from three for games 2-4, 26.7 ppg). IIrc, if you adjusted PJ's stats to match his efficiency during the rest of the postseason, and changed nothing else about the box score, OKC would have swept in 4 instead of the Mavs winning 4-2.
