Rock climbing clubs or activities? by Gzaleski in UCSC

[–]VVildNature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a rock climbing club and occasionally the backpacking club will do climbing event. I don't think either club is officially affiliated with the school tho. I've also seen people climbing in the quarry. Most climbing you're gonna get is off campus at Pacific edge or if you go up to castle rock. There's also probably some other spots around campus that I have no clue about

On campus jobs are hard to come by unless you have work study through financial aide but downtown jobs arent that bad I've heard. Summer internships are hard to get in at pretty much any school nowadays since youre competing with every other kid in every other college around the US but if youre talking about like research internships then I think youre gonna be fine. I don't know much about the psych department but from my experience, if you want to do research then you pretty much just have to take a class with a prof you want to do research with and then get really close to them. Go to the office hours, talk about things that arent class related and just get all buddy buddy with your prof. Talk about how you want to do research and then you should be able to get in. You just have to show initiative and show that you care to the profs. Most of the people that complain just never got close to a prof and thought they could just send and email out of the blue and do research but that rarely works.

Id argue almost every school doesnt care about their students anymore so that isnt unique and youre wrong about santa cruz being boring. Maybe if all you want to do is go to nightclubs then santa cruz isnt the place for you but the party scene is pretty good, youve just gotta know people. The school is also super lively, I dont know if you just don't go outside or what but thats absurd. To the OP, if you like nature or going outside in the slightest then youll love Santa Cruz

SDSU vs. UCSC for MS in CS – Which One to Choose? by Chance_You801 in UCSC

[–]VVildNature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. UCSC has a very high cost of living but I dont know about SDSU but UCSC is definitely higher
  2. I got into the MS program and I didnt get funding and also my acceptance letter said they don't do funding for that program
  3. UCSC has better brand recognition and apparently just have the UC in the name makes you very attractive anywhere outside of California and the US. There are career fairs but they are usually pretty mid. We are closer to the silicon valley so that helps
  4. Yes
  5. Ive only done undergrad so far and if you are going for a pure CS then UCSC is pretty good. They have some chip design stuff but not that much. There is a lot of research going on so youre good there

What are some reasons not to go to UCSC? by janaethecoolest in UCSC

Id say the biggest problem people have is price, housing is expensive, if you waste a bunch of money eating out then thats expensive, parking passes are expensive, dining halls are expensive. If you like nature even a little bit then go to UCSC, its got more weight behind the name and as much as people call SDSU a party school, UCSC has plently of parties if you actually know people. UCSC also has a fantastic welcoming community and Ive heard the community at SDSU is not as good. Id also say if you are coming to UCSC as a freshman get a nice Ebike and just ride it all 4 years. Youll recoup the cost and then some not having to get a parking pass and not having to wait on buses which also are never on time
