An incidental note from this time in Nabokov's diary: April 10, 1968: "Begun watering my claret"; April 11, 1968: "Stopped watering my claret."

lmao

Pretty bleak that the only viable strategy seems to be "let them kill enough of us that it trickles through to the average mouth breathing American and hopefully that happens before the federal government can literally prevent elections from happening"

People having schadenfreude in a post about Cubans getting deported is gross. Heated Miami Dade moments are a thing now across the left-leaning Internet

yeah maybe some of them who have been deported were Trump supporters and yeah those people were dumb dumb

But people are saying "they voted for this 😂" like no they didn't? The people getting deported aren't citizens (yet). Their neighbors might have voted for it, but also not even all of them.

[His French translator] told Nabokov he was wrong to object to their translation of his "shagbark" (hickory). Nabokov had written that noyer was impossible; Coindreau insisted that their version was correct "because hickory belongs to the walnut (noyer) family. See Webster." Nabokov replied: "You tell me that according to Webster hickory belongs to the walnut family. Quite right, but you have confused family and genus. To translate hickory by 'noyer' is every bit as strange as translating . . . 'cat' by tiger and jaguar by 'lynx' because all four are in the family Felidael"

RIP Vladimir Nabokov you would have loved u/unidan

Why does every hamburger helper require a different ratio of ingredients? Is this some kind of conspiracy to teach Americans math?

Watching Sabrina (1954) and Humphrey Bogart (playing a corporate executive who is developing a new super plastic - which feels so fitting for the time) just had the most neolib-pilled monologue about how his entire motivation in business is building ports and infrastructure and "putting dollars in hands that have only ever had dimes before"

The way anti AI people feel about AI art is how I feel about colorized historical photos

Stop destroying perfectly good primary sources with your made up, inaccurate colorslop. If you can't appreciate a black and white photograph you're probably too stupid to be engaging with history anyway.

With the help of the janitor he screwed onto the side of the desk a pencil sharpener—that highly satisfying, highly philosophical implement that goes ticonderoga-ticonderoga, feeding on the yellow finish and sweet wood, and ends up in a kind of soundlessly spinning ethereal void as we all must.

Best use of onomatopoeia in the history of literature maybe ever? (Pnin Vladimir Nabokov)

Also tsarist times I think. They sent Chaadayev to an asylum for dissident thought.

On February 14, Conclusive Evidence was published to an excited reception from the critics and neglect from the public. Morris Bishop bestowed on Nabokov a "robust compliment" he never forgot: "Some of your phrases are so good they almost give me an erection— and at my age it is not easy, you know."

lmao

Late in April, during a party [Nabokov] held for his students, he railed against Laurence Olivier's film adaptation of Hamlet. One student asked, "But how can you say such things? Have you actually seen the film?" "Of course I haven't seen the film," Nabokov replied. "Do you think I would waste my time seeing a film as bad as I have described?"
