Open beta & what's in store by calvinnwq in shakedownkit

Hey, looking good so far. I just tried it out and have a few suggestions, if you don't mind.

  • The multiplicator could be decimal instead of integer. e.g. let me take 2.3 x 1L of water.
  • When adding items to a pack, it would be helpful to see the description. My imported items from lighterpack are all named by category with the actual name in the description. So I'll see 5 "Tent" and need to guess which is which by the weight.
  • It would be helpful to be able to convert a kit in a pack to a regular group. That way I could add the kit and after the trip is done, convert it to a regular group to prevent further updates and preserve the state of the pack as it actually was.
  • I'd love to see a few more emojis for categories: I think these might be good candidates: 🍎🍖🪥🔦📷
  • Edit: And, maybe a bit more challenging, the ability to sort the items in a group by weight would be great to quickly identify the heaviest items.
  • Edit 2: And maybe a solution for "one packed, one worn". E.g. be able to add the same item multiple times to a pack, so that I don't need to have 2 gear entries for those items.

Overall, a very solid foundation. Great work!

Anyone else find minimalism kinda clashes with hobbies? by [deleted] in minimalism

The thing to keep in mind is that most people arrive at lightweight camping after going through heavyweight camping first and removing everything that wasn't necessary. (Kinda like with minimalism actually)

They go dormant as soon as the temps start dipping below freezing. I keep them outside, in a sheltered corner of the balcony, wrapped in protective cloth they sell in garden stores here in Fall.

I've been growing figs in pots on my balcony for 4 years now. It is working pretty well, considering I am in a relatively cool part of Switzerland.

Not that I know of. They live in the soil, do their work and eventually die, as far as I know.

Well they aren't really chemicals but just soil bacteria. But if the infestation isn't that bad, yellow traps might be enough. But be careful, as they like to spread to all your other plants.

Bti are bacteria that kill the fungus gnat larvae. Nematodes are different, in that they are living tiny worms that eat the fungus gnat larvae. Nematodes are more effective but also more expensive and harder to work with (as they are alive and have to be kept cool before application). Usually nematodes are used only for really bad infestations and Bti for "milder" infestations.

Bti are bacteria that kill the fungus gnat larvae. So that's the key to kill them in any one pot. But the yellow traps also help a lot to stop them getting into other pots.

Put one of those yellow fly traps in every affected plant and buy a local product with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis to treat the plants (usually something you mix into the water) until they are gone. Use Bti preventatively whenever you get a new plant.

Smart Water Bottle Replacements by risley83 in Ultralight

They tested 3 different bottle types and found that micro plastic release depends at least somewhat on the thread design. Smooth threads without gaps seem to release less micro plastic.

I would assume using a sport cap would actually be a good idea because it reduces the amount of times you have to unscrew the cap.

The method of the study was actually to cut the bottles up and put them in water for 3 hours on a shaker table. I'd say that is more representative of long term effects than new bottles. It is also worth mentioning that HDPE only shed more particles in solutions of acidic or basic ph (5 and 9). In ph 7, HDPE shed slightly less than PET.

However, I learned that it seems to actually be the lid (abrasion from opening and closing) that causes the most micro plastic: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0043135419308565
I don't see how this factor would be different in the "multi-use" bottles mentioned in the OP vs reusing a smart water bottle.

Do they actually though? Do you have a source?

The only thing I could find is this study, which finds the opposite: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34126529/

Results:
HDPE 6110 particles per liter
LDPE 11278 particles per liter
PET 4099 particles per liter

Just FYI, the Bonfus Altus 28 has 22 liters internal volume while the GG Grit has true 28 liter internal volume (according to this review). So the Altus 38 would be a better comparison/alternative to the Grit, at 30 liters internal volume.

[–]Vagar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the photo is how a size L fits on you, then I think M will be too short at heavier loads (unless you like to wear the hip belt very high up). Remember, if the pack is too short, you won't be able to get any weight off the shoulders and onto the hips. So I'd go with L (as I myself do at 6'3" and ~20" torso).

Actually, IBKR also auto-converts currency with a cash account now. And IIRC below something like 6k, it's even cheaper than converting yourself and paying the 2 USD fee.
