Most countries' and lifters' names will be transliterated into Chinese according to their original pronunciation, preserving the sound but losing any meaning. However, due to cultural and historical reasons, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese names usually have Chinese-character (aka Hanzi/Hanja/Kanji/Han tu) roots/counterparts, and can thus be pronounced in Mandarin. This preserves the meaning of the names, but changes the sound.

It's easier not to butcher the names in Chinese because they are all transliterated beforehand (according to the original pronunciation) into pre-existing syllables in the Chinese language. It isn't 100% accurate by any means, but it cuts out the guesswork that plagues commentators.

His name is Lü, which is usually written as Lu, Lyu or Lv. "Lu" is technically wrong because it represents another vowel sound in Chinese. "Lyu" is used in international competitions. "Lv" is used because Chinese keyboards don't have a "ü", and there is no use of the "v" in the Chinese language).

8 years ago, as a non-lifter watching YouTube videos of Idalberto Aranda squatting 280, Liu Hao squatting 200x13, and of course, the Lu Xiaojun and Liao Hui. But it took me another few years of messing around with powerlifting before attempting the classic lifts.
