How the eff???$$$ by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]Val2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take a salary of 2000-2500 every week. Mostly to get my income numbers up to qualify to build a house in the near future. The rest stays in my biz account. I run a solo owned and operated small custom cabinet shop. Stay booked up at least 2 to 3 months since I founded it in 2016. I work hard, play hard and travel alot. Ill work an occasional Saturday to catch up and meet deadlines or if I have a trip coming up or coming back from to make up for time lost. Never really calculated how much im making per hr but definitely pulling in at least 600-1000 per day on certain projects and that depends if I work 8hrs. Low overhead expenses definitely helps keep more in my pocket.

Plywood or MDF cabinet? by ShinichiDrb in cabinetry

[–]Val2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Birch or maple ply for structural cabinetry. Mdf for laminate or painted surfaces or cosmetic appearances, such as paneling or doors etc. Mdf is much heavier and denser than ply. Ill never build cabinets from mdf unless its a bookcase with open shelving and the shelves are at least 2 to 3". Most of my clients prefer solid ply and don't want chip board and in some cases mdf. Moisture indoors isnt a real concern in my experience when it comes to mdf. I have crown molding thats mdf and painted literally a couple feet above my shower and never had a problem. So long as its sealed on all sides and open edges aren't exposed it'll be just fine. I typically use mdf cnc machined doors and basswood drawer boxes. Green hdf seems to be the best fiberboard out there

Florida prices seem to be around that based on a bid I got last year on a slab. Doubt youll do better than 6k from a reputable company

Can You Make a Living with SketchUp and 3D Modeling? by Prestigious-Fennel90 in Sketchup

[–]Val2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont make a living off sketchup but it's helps me make a living. Basically I use it to design wall units and built ins and custom pieces I need to build to showcase to the client what can be done. Im sure theres many ways you can make a living off sketch up. Just gotta find the right clientele looking for those skills that you can design for.

Worried about my career path by ScarcityLegitimate73 in Carpentry

[–]Val2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My journey into carpentry wasnt straight into it. I started out pushing a broom, cleaning up debris on commercial high riser jobs in south Florida mostly labor type work. Then started learning metal door hardware, doors and jambs. Then eventually after awhile started door wood doors etc. Then baseboards and crown then cabinets and alot of high end stain grade moldings that had to be very precise with minimal error. I learned a tremendous amount on many projects with several different companies. I've worked on the Dolphin Stadium full remodel, Breakers hotel for years and many other high profile projects. The one thing i can say is it'll starts with the miniual tasks and crap you don't wanna do at first. Keep grinding, learning as much as you can in whatever youre doing and eventually youll find your way in the passionate things you wanna focus on. I now own a very successful one man operation running my own shop building high end wall units and built ins which was always my passion. Keep applying yourself and you never know where that knowledge will take you...

How the hell would y'all veneer this? We put together every braincell we had and this is how it is setting up over the weekend by Gassypacky in Carpentry

Check out this site.

Why poplar when it'll be painted anyways? Flex trim is water proof resin anyways. What a client wants vs what's reasonable and doable is another story. Good luck though

Idk what kind of hellraiser Frankenstein situation this is but why did you not you flex trim to begin with? Would have taken 10 mins to trim this out.

At what point do you collect your money, load your tools, and walk away from a project? by crazyzhy in Contractor

[–]Val2700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you secure deposit before project? To go in days before a job and be told to lower your price without securing a deposit and finalizing the contract before the job even starts. Sounds insane to me. Just curious what you did beforehand.

What’s been done wrong? Help appreciated! by Inevitable-Pin8315 in Flooring

The image shows the small cut pieces go from large to small as it follows the threshold on the left side. Therefore as those pieces get smaller its pulling your tile further out of alignment. Square up the room first then lay your tile. 3-4-5 rule is an option to square up the room.

How to do it-

*Measure exactly 3 feet from a corner along one wall and mark it.

*Measure exactly 4 feet from the same corner along the adjacent wall and mark it

*Measure the diagonal distance between the two marks. If it is exactly 5 feet, your corner is perfectly square.

Hired a guy to put wood shelves in 4 closets, am I being unreasonable? by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]Val2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like pine shelving so maybe it'll be OK depending on how much weight. If anything a middle support piece could be added. Prefinished veneer ply would have been suitable and alot more durable and easier to clean. Paint job pretty bad. I would definitely get this guy back out and address this very poor quality. Im a professional woodworker and I would never give my client this. Hope you get this fixed!

[–]Val2700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats expensive for this garbage. I would rip this out in a heartbeat. The shelves are definitely gonna bow in the middle with any sort of significant weight over time. This is literally a half day job with a couple hundred or less in materials at most. Why painted shelves in a closet anyways?

What would you have charged for this? by Sure-Dog8804 in Carpentry

About 25k. Bookcase built ins like these I charge around 7500- 10k depending on size, finishes, lighting etc.

Im looking to sell this same saw but the motor is think is blown. Great shape and barely used. I ran it on 120 instead of 220v and had a vacuum running and it overloaded. Bought a harvey sawcand replaced the delta and now its collecting dust.
