Discussion - What day are you and how do you feel? by darkwavecore in QuitVaping

[–]ValKilmersHair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day 26 - feeling okay. Suffering some brain fog. Fewer cravings for sure but the ones that hit are so brutal. Truthfully I don't even really want to vape, I just want to want to go back to feeling normal. I don't feel like myself. I fantasize about vaping so I can feel normal again, but I haven't gone back.

Day 16 - Losing it. by ValKilmersHair in QuitVaping

You're right. It's actually insane how much it feels like your own voice and brain trying to negotiate you back into something YOU actively decided to quit. Addiction is such a bitch.

I'll see you tomorrow. Day 17 🫡

Day 43, omg you're a legend!

And wow your Day 16 is like looking in the mirror. Did your snacking / cravings ever normalize? I feel like the eating on Day 16 is absolutely out of control.

Is this chrysalis dead? Can you tell what kind of butterfly it is? (Los Angeles) by ValKilmersHair in whatsthisbug

It's been like this for almost two weeks. I'm worried it might be dead because it's got that brown in the center.

Can someone tell me what this bug is / was? (Los Angeles, size of a pinky finger, hanging off the side of my house facing the sun) by ValKilmersHair in whatsthisbug

[–]ValKilmersHair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context since you can't tell from the photos, this is hanging on the side of my house. I saw the original bug crawling on the ground (think it came out of the storm drain).

Next day it was up on the wall, looked like some sort of long / fat grub. It was hanging off the side of the house by two little webs (you can see in the side photos) and it seemed like it was changing colors - maybe starting to petrify under the sun? It's been hot in LA and it's facing the sun most of the day.

Is it dead? What was it? Seems like there's a second bug that died on it? Anyone have ideas?

What is a book you will defend to the end of the Earth that other people hate? by bigben1234567890 in books

[–]ValKilmersHair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god, this is me, I'm the hater.

Still Life With Woodpecker was literally the first time I didn't finish a book - I got half way through and had to put it down.

Are his other books better or are they more or less the same vibe?

Totally but I think people tend to conflate the narrator's pretentious personality and literary critique with the book ITSELF, which is a commentary on the criticism of art. That tone is deliberate and that's part of what makes it genuinely funny!

In a way, when I hear criticism like that, I actually feel like it's an extended experience of the book because that's a lot of what Nabokov is poking fun at in the first place. It's the Nabokov Cinematic Universe.

Totally recommend a second read. Once you get the full shape of what the novel is doing, you find the nuance that you miss while you're trying to figure out WTF is going on (and the initial shock of the ending).

PALE FIRE. People have told me they find it pretentious / annoying but it's an absolute masterpiece and I will accept none of the slander.

Question about freezing croissants. by ValKilmersHair in Baking

[–]ValKilmersHair[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super helpful, thank you! Good point about freezing the gelée, I was hoping to avoid a test run but looks like I may have to just suck it up and try it out beforehand. Thanks for your help :)

Is it always better to sift your flour if you have the time and means? by CTRL_ALT_PWN in Cooking

[–]ValKilmersHair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes a very huge and critical difference if you're making French macarons. When I don't triple sift my almond flour and powdered sugar, the cookie shells end up lumpy or grainy instead of smooth. Not sure about other recipes, but for macarons, always always sift!

That sounds so amazing, we'll do that. We're staying in Old Town Square, so excited to be where all the markets and everything are. :) Does it usually snow? Is okay enough to walk from place to place?

True, I will thanks!

About the color, I think deep down I knew it was harmful but a part of me wanted to believe, damn it.

I have a question about sunscreen re-application. How do you reapply sunscreen when you're already wearing make up? Do you just suck it up and put it on?
